With all due respect Jenny, I hate this attitude. Such a response breeds mediocrity. Horrible defeatist attitude.
Dig your heels in.

You look at Collingwood last year. Even though he wanted to go home for family reasons they dug their heels in and got a great deal for Beams in the end. Patty is a top 5 player in the league. We should be going for 2 first rounder and a player as a starting point. If we end up settling for 2 first rounders or a first, second plus a good player that is the absolute minimum for us.

Once we match, Danger and Treloar are both uncontracted players who need to be traded for. GWS will push hard for Treloar and I have this horrible sinking feeling that we'll get less for Danger than they get for Treloar even though Danger is worth so much more.

I hope you are joking???

If we only get pick 9 I will be livid at our incompetence.
Definitely need more than pick 9

Needs to be an addition and this is where the trade will reach stalemate

Still think we need elite talent so hopefully 2 first rounders which we can use in draft or combo trade /draft together with our 13

Would be good to have 2 first rounders in our next 2 drafts... A chance to improve our list in terms of balance

Problem is, in these situations the team losing the player rarely gets their worth. See Hawthorn/Buddy. It won't be long before the compensation pick is removed completely and therefore we would get nothing. People need to be realistic in their expectations. If we can manufacture something better than pick 14, we've done well. If we can then turn that pick(s) into something even better - bonus.
Agreed. Too many people on here expressing their "wants" rather than being realistic. Some are simply focused on screwing Geelong rather than being focused on achieving something better than pick 14.

Personally I think two first rounders or a first rounder and a player is about what we will get....at best. Would like more though.

I couldn't care less about screwing Geelong. I think they'll be average with or without our help.

I care about getting adequately compensated for one of the best players in the league who, if we match, is not a free agent.

That is the whole issue that is clouding peoples thoughts on this trade, FA

As you said if we match which almost everyone believes we will, the case he is a uncontracted player looking for a trade to get where he wants

The club wanting him will have to trade so Adelaide will be happy, Of course we wont get his true value that value is a player of similar ability. Two first rounders is OK but with a player like murdoch would be satisfactory. Murdoch and a 1st rounder is effectively a 1st and 2nd rounder which is way way unders.

I didn't say that you wanted to screw Geelong. However there are many comments on here that are driven wholly on getting back at Geelong. Those posters are obviously angry but they need to step back and refocus on nothing else but getting the best deal for Danger. That's what we should all want.

The debate really is about what we will get. Again some people are aiming for the world and some are trying to be realistic. Unfortunately those trying to be realistic are being accused of being easy beats or mediocre. My view is we should try for the max (whatever that is) but we need to be prepared that we might get 2 items....2first rounders or a mix of a first rounder and a player. If we end up with that I am not going to get pissed at the club. More than that and I will be ecstatic and if we only get pick 9 I will be pissed.

Pretty small wiggle room there between being pissed off or not. Basically a 5 pick upgrade in a poor draft + a 2nd or 3rd rounder and you're happy.
A 5 pick upgrade, and a 1st rounder and you're ecstatic. ;)

whats so unrealistic about 2 first and a player?

geelong want .. geelong pay.. simple.

whats geelong gonna do when we say no? "we'll take him in the psd"?
if we play hardball think it might get to a stage where geelong pull out , there is a tipping point where getting danger for them will not be worth it , hopefully we can find the point and ask for just unders

I am not sure I understand. I said that if we get 2 first rounders or one first rounder plus a player that I wouldn't we pissed at the club. (many on here would be). I then said that of we got more that that I would be ecstatic however if we only got one first rounder or one player I would be pissed.

What is Dangerfield worth is such an open question, and lots of ways to look at. Some people talk in terms of salary, or draft picks.

Ignoring the situation of RFA and the trade of an OOC player (and that Geelong supporters are a bunch of campaigners), I think he's worth $1.2-1.5mill. And there are precedents of other players in that range, Ablett, Franklin etc. $1.5 mill is 2 players on $750k each.

I think he's worth 4 x 1st round draft picks, as you'd imagine each of the following guys is roughly worth 2 x 1st rounders.
Bontempelli and Wingard are the only recent draftees in the top 20 AFL Player Ratings at #11 and #20, Heppell #25 and Treloar #28. Danger is #3 on that list.

Based on that his range at this trade is between 1 x 1st round pick, and 4 1st rounders. Therefore 2 x 1st rounders, plus a 2nd rounder or equivalent player (Murdoch) is right in the middle of that range, and completely fair.

We are guaranteed of pick #14 at the lowest. Therefore getting #9 from Geelong is a 5 pick upgrade.

So for #9 plus an average player (who we arbitrarily say is a 2nd rounder) you're not happy or sad.
For #9 only you're pissed.
For #9 and another 1st rounder, you're ecstatic.

I'm just pointing out (maybe being a bit facetious) that there's a fine line between you being pissed at the club and being ecstatic.

No.. I'd be satisfied, not happy. 2 firsts and best 22 player would be ideal and fair. Especially when two early picks is his worth.

If there's no option to pull out we ask for 3 first rounders and 3 players

There is definitely a point where geelong don't trade with us , we need to try find it and pull back a fraction so we get maximum
We aren't that greedy. I just mean the AFC will guage with negotiations what they will part with. Geelong walking away with a reasonable trade will be a failure and may cost them his contract

I think the 2 first rounders would be fair, but 1 st Rounder and a player(which will probably be a Murdoch Type) effectively means 1 st rounder and 1 second rounder because that is all he is worth. So no, I wouldnt be happy with the player option. 2 1st's as a minimum worst case.

Are we in a position of power here though?
I think the balance of power is a fine one ... both clubs don't have enough power to demand anything, as there is too much to lose if goes bad either way.

Crows don't want to get nada.
Geelong don't want to miss Danger.

Because of this, it will be one of those deals where everyone just goes "oh well, not perfect - but at least we didnt <insert past catastrophe here>".

A player and pick 9 after matching is fine with me., or we get a deal done that the AFL is ok with regarding the compo and pick 9.

The player? Dunno - I like Gregson > Murdoch > Horlin-Smith.

The "AFL experts" (namely Gary Lyon, Leigh Matthews, Lloyd, Fantasia, ) even Hutchy personal opinion on 5aa, have said he is worth 2 first rounders* (and assuming one would be a single digit pick) as a minimum. So that is the general consensus of the "AFL industry "

So to expect 9 and 2016 first round ( could be up to pick 18) is not unreasonable, and the minimum we should expect.

Pick 9 and Murdoch / gregson/ GHS who on the open market is worth no more than a pick 25+ is unreasonable.

/ rant.

Edit: why don't we have a poll of what we think we should get from the Dangerfield trade?

If Geelong offer nothing of value then I would certainly be on the phone, even North Melbourne or Richmond, two clubs with potential to grab a flag and in Vic, may appeal to PD instead of the PSD or ND where Carlton, Brisbane, Melbourne or GC look like the potential suitors.

Send him to Carlton pick 1 and 19? They don't have Judd anymore. And in some way he owes them.
