I'm kinda shocked at how little we had to pay to get him.

I know we only moved up our first rounder two spots, and our other first slid back two spots.

But it seems kinda crazy we could grab a talent like Curtin only giving up 10 and a future 2nd (effectively)
Moved up three picks didnt we and dropped back 2 this year. Plus our second rounder.

Absolute bargain and the GWS was the one always most likely to target despite many on here thinking it wasnt possible to obtain. Amazing get

I have not watching him at all and relying on highlighted package. Looking at the highlights the crows posted, I didn't think it was that impressive. A bunch of uncontested marks, decent skills when he has space but clearly a physical specimen.

Other highlights packages are much more informative including the one below:

Much more impressed after watching this as shows great movement in close, cleaners and acceleration. Along with his skills and strength this gives me some confidence be could maybe play midfield.

About the 3:20 mark on the above video, he gathers a ground ball looks up, scans inside the corridor looking for a better option then seems to know that he has the outside option as a get out, but was looking for a more attacking play.

So much composure.

It’s those moves that really make him look like Dawson. It’s not a direct comparison but his stability through the hips reminds me a bit of Pendlebury also.

I honestly believe Clarkson wanted Curtin

When Clarko influenced the build of Hawthorn’s dynasty list they used their draft picks to take a balance of quality talls and mid, and there is no doubt in my mind he wanted Curtin for this very reason.

North lack elite talls, and i’m not convinced in Duursma.

Duursma looks like he has some class but he doesn’t look like a type to end up a permanent midfielder, and classy HF can get lost in a game

North’s decision not to select Curtin was a recruiting decision, not a coaches decision and this might come back to haunt them

I'm guessing they jumped at Gothard at 12 because they knew a couple of others would have taken him at 16-18 before the next pick we traded them rolled in.

Then just traded an excess F2 for the bloke they wanted to get originally at 8 when they held that.

I think GWS played it very well, as I think we did too. I wouldn't say either of us should be upset.
I wouldn't either, but it was basically a wash trade for them, so why on earth did they bother doing it?

Yeah I see a lot of Pendlebury in his midfield/groundball packages in that video.

Not too many 197cm midfielders kicking around, which makes you wonder if it is possible for Curtin to make it as an AFL mid.

Didn't notice those types of comments on their board re Brander. That seems to have come from somewhere else.

I got the impression they're a little disappointed, but on the whole glad they didn't burn their F1 to land him. And a few hopeful that they can lure him home at some stage.

Quite a bit anger at the gifts North were given, and the absurdity of the concessions allowed to the northern academies in comparison to everyone else
I don’t see the Brander comparison. Brander always showed signs of uncompetitiveness in his draft year, plus he never had the agility and ability to take the game on that Curtin does

This is the very definition of starting the *ing car. Early debut on the cards at his size and with his skillset. Debuted at WAFL seniors and had 20+ possessions, bloke is born ready.
agreed. great time to have a cracking fixture with this guy running out to multiple thursday and friday night blockbusters in the first few months with the club...whilst Weagles wallow battling for the spoon in crappy timeslots

If he does end up a midfielder, I would be encouraging him to drag his defender with him to forward line when ever possible. At 197cm he is going to have a massive marking advantage over his opponent.

I don't believe that in the slightest.

If Clarko wants Curtin, Clarko gets Curtin as they had three picks before pick 8. No one at North is risking his wrath seeing he's the only thing they have going for them.

All the talk recently has been about Clarko absolutely loving Curtin and having continual chats with him leading up to the draft, so to then see them not select him was very odd and he must have been overruled. I think they just had to take him at pick 4 as I feel like they have enough of the Duursma type already on their list.

With the amount of AFL d**k-kissing they've been the beneficiaries of lately, they can probably afford to burn a pick or two.

I would love for him to show that midfield ability in the AFL, but I'm sceptical whether it will translate at his size. How many 197cm players have played midfield? Would be crazy.

Hopefully the coaches have learnt a lesson from Dawson and will be willing to give it a go.

It wouldn't be the worst thing to have another Dawson running around half back. I also wonder if he could turn into a gun key forward?
Will it would be ideal for him to end up as a mid, if he doesn't transition into the middle he likely ends up a gun defender. Look how important Alex Rance was at the Tigers during their first premiership win. Would be nice to have someone of that quality playing in our defence for the next 10 years.

Essendon's Scott had an interesting discussion on Gettable the other night. He made it clear that coaches have little influence on draft selections, since they can't match the knowledge of the recruiting team. On the other hand, they are big players in trades, since they have as much knowledge as anyone there.

The other issue is that list managers are looking at the overall balance/health of the list in longer terms. Most coaches are fixated on the immediate future

I think Clarko is a good enough operator to know he shouldn't interfere with drafting
