Yes, thankfully the Dees saved us from another Gibbs scenario.

Petty wasn't even a priority need, which made it more crazy.

Hope we learnt our lesson.

The clubs priorities shifted at the end of 2023 from merely making finals but we were going to throw everything at pushing ourselves into contention. Yes its clear now the Dees saved us from ourselves. Instead of developing and filling holes on our list we were going to throw the kitchen sink at a short term solution that would have cost us dearly long term and probably ended up killing our current list for no gain. North Melbourne refusing our offer for JHF allowed us to get Rankine and Rachele too. So two clubs had to refuse our stupidity for us to sit with the current squad we have.

I believe we offered 3 firsts for JHF which was knocked back. So we also got Dawson in addition to Rachele and Rankine as a result of North Melbourne's kindness. I think we're at the point where other clubs feel sorry for us and have taken on the task of managing our list for us. It's like when I was a kid and my dad was teaching me to play chess and I had absolutely no idea what I was doing... "are you SURE you want to make that move? think it over and try a different one".

He had the knee strapped all year. How much he was hindered, we can't know.

Would have impacted his ability to reach full fitness and as a rookie it would have greatly hurt his ability to have match fitness to the level the club would have liked. If he stays fit this pre season I would expect we see a very different Curtin.

Not true. Link below and quote.
We could have used Norths F2 for Dawson, and Sydney would have had no option but to accept.
So in isolation it was JHF and Dawson for 3 firsts. Youd do that deal, especially when Rankine wouldve still found a way to us given different trade options available to GC.

Similarly we would have found a way to get Rankine when he nominated us. I.e. F1 (2023) or something.

ALL UP:
In: JHF, Dawson, Rankine
Out: 3 first round picks (2021 - Rachele, 2021, 2022), Curtin (2023)

"The Crows were willing to part with their first-round pick last year and both selections in that territory this year – one linked to Melbourne – in return for pick one and North’s future second-round pick."

Doubtful Sydney would have accepted just North's F2, we probably need to trade our 2nd rounder (Soligo) and North's F2 for a F1 or Sydney would have asked for our 2nd rounder as part of North's F2.

It would be interesting what would have happened if North had come back and said they'd trade pick 1 for the 3 firsts without anything else involved. I suspect we'd have folded faster than Superman on laundry day and done that deal anyway, and likely have missed out on Dawson.

Maybe. We will never know.
But 2.5 firsts for one player is pretty outrageous, even if they end up being Gary Ablett Jnr.

I think the deal we offered for JHF wasn’t too bad

Agree with others we still find a way to get rankine and Dawson as once OOC players nominate it happens. Definitely lose Rachelle, likely soligo, then it’s muddier the next flow ons so hardly worth debating those possibilities

BUT where I do think we dodged a bullet is what happens with JHF

You make that trade on basis of a local superstar, retention etc.

I’ve no confidence he doesn’t try walk out on us year 1 like he did north. We’d have simply had to dig in more than north did though because we’d have to get back what we paid and it wouldn’t have been available. So we stick fat for another year of disruptive speculation and he walks OOC for a massively low ROI, to ports benefit no less.

That’s the potential doomsday scenario we may have been saved from not the deal we offered for the player he will likely become

Think he knows the path to port from north would be easier for him too and it’s why he didn’t let on pre draft he wanted to stay in SA (and why I feel he would have walked out on us because he just always wanted to be at port)

If a player says before the draft that they don't want to leave their home state and they'll go home ASAP if drafted elsewhere, doesn't the AFL view that as draft tampering? Unless it's a Victorian player, I guess, because of course they don't want to go interstate, why would they, don't be stupid, shut up etc.

He would be silly to sign anything yet.

Backing himself in to show his worth and then look at extending should the AFC be heading in the right direction.
I actually think he knows that he is high value already. If the club comes with a good long term contract for good coin, I hope its big enough to ensure he signs it.

Sportsbet has Dan @ $21 for the rising star 🤩
That's worth a nibble.

This kid can play.
When I looked at his highlights before we drafted him I was really impressed... and then we did, and I got really excited. I had the feeling then he has the skill and raw attributes to become truly elite, but to be determined. Possibly another Bont, Judd or Roo? Possibly a power forward/big midfielder hybrid or rebound defender/big midfielder hybrid. It's the same feeling I had with Thilthorpe - all the traits to be genuinely elite are already there.

The major question has always been, can our coaches identify his best role(s) and get the best out of his (potentially) elite skill set?

Nicks NO.
Burns NO.
VB NO.

I'm interested in Davis, The Lions kids played strong confident footy with flair and Davis would've had plenty of input with them.

The million dollar question

They've got some talent at their disposal now. In previous years we've looked pretty thin talent-wise but now there's some real upside players.

He looks like a forward to me, at least for the next couple of years. I just hope Tex being in the team doesn’t hold back his development.
Looks like a truly genuine Utility to me, could play almost anywhere. Though I would prefer more in the attacking zones than defensive zones.
