D'ya think?.
Prelim was such a shame - everything went wrong. Flag was winnable this year - we were so well drilled. We were in the game in the last quarter despite getting smacked at stoppage, defence coughing up a heap of goals they shouldn't and the forward line having a Cox Andrews match up derailing fast break opportunities.

Hmm, May could help there

We gambled and lost. Not the first team and certainly not the last who will do this.

As Brisbane showed, sometimes the gamble pays off, and Collingwood and Geelong showed when it doesn't. We went in with injured players and the Cats refused to sub out their busted FF.

I don't think it was the injured players that cost us though.

You're just reading it wrong. Bobby didn't play because they didn't think he had the conditioning for second and third efforts and to get to where he was meant to be often enough - that's the not fit to perform part. McStay didn't have any conditioning issues - he had pain to deal with.

McStay wasn’t fit enough to compete for marks, which is 99% of his job, to provide a strong aerial contest. So no, he was not fit to perform.

Checkers clearly wasn’t fit to perform either

Which most of us could see from a month out

He was likely the best we had available.

McStay - shoulder
West - PF
McInnes - ACL
Johnson - broken leg
Howes - too raw

Teams make these calls every week. Some work, some don’t. Build a bridge.

You're imposing your definition of it.

A shoulder injury doesn't affect your conditioning or stop you getting to contests - it makes you less effective in the contests. The philosophy is essentially to not pick the better player in a contest if he can't get to as many contests.

We could have just gone smaller

Brisbane's foward line was shorter than ours even without Mihocek

Jordy early on in the season, McStay looking like a mummy the last couple of months, Checkers looking like he's been bashed right before the game the last few weeks and Howey running out of petrol tickets before half time when he came back for the Prelim begs to differ.

yep we should have won that game
really was a missed opportunity
brisbane not that great

When we landed Buller, what i read into that, is that we dont want Dan in ruck contests anymore.

So in saying that, I'd really like to see McStay trim down a bit, I think he's carrying too much weight to deal with the ruck duties, and his injuries and recoveries have been worse because of this.

If Buller does ruck more for us, more time up forward for Dan (fingers crossed, less injuries), he could deal with being more mobile!

I think we landed Buller because McStay Mihocek and Membrey are all over 30 and close to the end.

Yep. Who cares about second ruck. We want him to be a competent kpf.

I know its a month on, but i was another that wanted a smaller forward line.
Clearly a fit Bobby plays, this allows the smaller forward set up. Still, dont think we would have gone small had Bobby played, Steele misses out but selection would of been super interesting.

this is McStays forward line now… no more rucking with the Buller addition/possibly steene, I believe there is a still a lot of quality service entering our f50 that he has the opportunity to kick 50+ goals next year, Jamie Elliot should be his inspiration going into 2026

We were also fortunate that Brisbane had so many big injuries to star players, so swings and roundabouts. Brisbane at full strength are just better than us right now

Injured players back, the addition of 2 best 23 players and arguably the best player in this draft in Annable. They will be so hard to beat next year again

Yup. And while we were playing off in gf’s and prelims they were a basket case. Swings and roundabouts. (On top of afl handouts)

If Oscar Allen gets back to good form they'll be nearly unstoppable, lots of excellent youth too. Scary times
