He really isn't that slow.

Not necessarily slow BB, but he is not on the move enough I don't think. You rarely see him gathering the ball at a stoppage with momentum, which means he is always swarmed by tacklers straight away. He's got a solid frame, so if he can start getting a head of steam up before he gathers the ball he will take some stopping.

Hey Ash. Just wondering when Daniel Rich is going to get a haircut? He's starting to get a bit of a Mullet.

I think he’ll cut it when his new girlfriend lets him. She loves the mullet.

Brett Burton injury update

Daniel isn’t moving along as quickly as we would have liked. He’s still getting some soreness in that area of the foot, so we have to go slow with him. We don’t take any risks with a stress reaction, we don’t want to make the issue worse and make it into a stress fracture.

I'm far from being a medical expert, but I would put him on the shelf, wrap him in cotton wool for the season and just get him cherry ripe for 2012.

I would play Rich as soon as he is fit for a few reasons:

1) he is a third year player and is still developing. The more experience he gets the better. It will be the first time he has returned from an injury at this level, and going through that will be part of the learning curve.

2) he is part of our core group, and these players need to get as much game time together as possible to build onfield cohesion. This is especially the case for the midfielders.

3) due reward. Players have egos and want to be playing footy. If players have earnt their spot in the team, not playing them may lead to player dissatisfaction.

4) to try and win.

The season is shot already Grim, so IMO no need to rush DR back and risk stirring up the injury again...its just not worth it, he's too valuable.....and that type of foot problem needs lots of time to heal and seal, so to speak...he has the chance now to do just that and be rearing to go next year..

I would play Rich as soon as he is fit for a few reasons:

Well the word 'fit' is the nebulous part. There is "reasonably sure the leg will hold up" fit and then there is "that hot spot has completely and entirely healed... he is 100 percent" fit.

He is a very important player going forward, we shoudl have him in there playing any chance we get. The boys need to get use to playing with each other, and use to how each other plays. It's not a big deal as he hasn't missed much footy, but if he is fit, he should play. We shouldn't rush him back in, but if he is fully over the injury and there is 1 game left, he should play it.

Kevin Sheahan

Again, 'pings' them like McKenzie. Low, hard, penetrating, over the lines. It's like the quarter-back who's able to spot the target and drop it over the top of that pack that's in front of him, onto the bloke running to advantage. Whether it's towards goal or leading up, his depth perception as well as the skill is elite.

Chris Judd had a stunning first season in 2002 while Brisbane's Daniel Rich, Port Adelaide's Danyle Pearce and Fremantle's Rhys Palmer are perhaps three (sic) players who suffered 'dips' after impressive starts to their career.

Mystery surrounds gun midfielder Daniel Rich's foot problem. He has been assessed as two weeks away for at least the past month.
Michael Voss

"But we have back-up - Drummo has got himself fit and healthy and is a likely return, and Daniel Rich is another coming back - he will be under consideration."

Richy will be training with the main group at tomorrow’s session. Barring any incident there, he will be available to play this week.

Daniel Rich shone for the Lions' reserves in his first match back from a stress reaction in his foot, and Voss expected him to come back into the seniors against Collingwood next week.

Yeah, I would have thought so (playing next week). He’s had enough training now to bring him back so we’ll obviously have a look at the team.

Lions to recall Rich for Magpies

Darren Cartwright
August 14, 2011 - 4:19PM

Highly-rated Brisbane midfielder Daniel Rich is set for a recall for the clash with AFL giants Collingwood at the MCG next Saturday.

Rich, who has recovered from a foot stress fracture, proved his fitness in the reserves to raise a smile from coach Michael Voss.

"He's had enough training now to bring him back," Voss said.

Rich's booming left foot kick will go someway towards the Lions trying to break down the Magpies renowned defensive press.

Den Diaries

After getting through my first hitout in seven weeks with the Lions Reserves last Saturday at Coorparoo, I’ll definitely be hoping that I get selected for our trip to Melbourne. My foot pulled up well and I feel like I’m ready to play.

The past couple of months have been frustrating to say the least, particularly considering the injury probably ended up taking a little bit longer to heal than I first expected. But I’ve had plenty of company on the sidelines during that time with Browny, Rog, Joel Patfull and plenty others being ruled out for the season.

It seemed like only a few months ago we were all so worried Rich was gone. Now it seems as though he is going to be a 250 game Lion! :)

Michael Voss

The Lions will be bolstered by the return of key midfielder Daniel Rich, who returns from a serious foot injury after proving his fitness with an eye-catching display in the reserves last weekend.

"He's been out for a fair while and it hasn't been spoken about a whole lot, his absence. But, he's a pretty important part of our midfield and to have him back is good," said Voss.

"He should be fresh coming into the back end of the year. He looked it last week and we're hoping he can finish off the year strong."

rich35.jpg

Personal wish list: Rich to drop some kilos this off season and concentrate purely on endurance. He's got it all, booming kick, can think through traffic, place the footy to advantage and hit 50m targets.
Our midfield will go to the next level, once he starts putting together 25-30 disposal games. Just needs to will himself from one contest to another, once he loses the extra weight.

Rich played the final quarter against Collingwood after coming on as a substitute and said he got through the game and recovered well.

21-year-old Rich said he didn't lift to play against many of his mates, including ruckman Nic Naitanui, who was taken by the Eagles at No.2 in the 2008 NAB AFL Draft that Rich was chosen at No.7 in.

" You don't go out of your way to lift for the game but it's always good to play against mates," he said.

"Obviously I know quite a few of them and I'm sure a lot of the other boys do as well, so it's good fun."

I recall one of Rich's best games was against Freo in the wet, and tonight 18 possessions at half time. Seems to thrive in wet weather footy.
