I believe most of you would be aware of this. A couple years ago the Adelaide Crows had the choice of Wayne Carey or Daniel Wells, eventually picking up Carey. I believe Gary Ayres made this decision as he wanted to try and get a premiership in his short term time at the Crows. What are your thoughts on this? I personally would of gone with Daniel Wells as he is the next McLeod, if not better. But Ayres tried to do something BIG in his couple years at the Crows, he fell flat on his ass and now the Crows have with missing out on Wells. Thoughts...?

Hasus, with respect this issue has been absolutely done to death on this board.

Do a keyword search for 'Wells' within this board and take it from there. ;)

Oh sorry... I have only been here for 1 month, didn't know :( You wouldn't think that though judging by my posts :p

Yeah this one's been done a few times. In short:

It was a gamble, and as often happens with gambles it didn't pay off.

At the time Carey seemed like a logical fit but I think most of us were supportive of going after him. Even if giving up the No.2 and a high second round pick did seem a little steep.

Looking back, we were the clear losers in the deal. But that's hindsight.

We could argue forever whether or not it was the right move knowing what we knew then.

Everytime I watch wells play I cringe at the thought of what we threw away for a season and a half of careys services. Was it worth it? The answer is unfortunately no......

YAWN.

Most of us were pretty happy at the time to get Carey. Noone knew at that stage whether pick 4 would become pick 2, Richmond saying that they wouldn't have given it away if they'd known that as there were 3 stand-out choices that year.

The Carey gamble was worth it. No we didn't win a premiership but yes, we had a great opportunity, and I still firmly believe that if we'd had Stevo for all of '03 we would have made the GF.

In hindsight it was a bad decision, and at the moment it would be great to have Wells, but Wells wouldn't have presented us the opportunity to win a flag in '03.

Let's take the good with the bad, yes we ********ed up on this one, but Johncock, Edwards, Goodwin, Vardy, McLeod, Jarman (to a lesser extent), Johnson, Kenny and Hentschel were all absolute steals that rarely get brought up.

I believe most of you would be aware of this. A couple of years ago the Western Bulldogs had the choice of Brett Montgomery and the draft pick that became Brent Guerra or Nathan Eagleton. I believe Terry Wallace made this decision because he thought Nathan Eagleton was the second coming of Craig Bradley. I personally would have gone with Montgomery and Guerra as one is a best and fairest winner and an All-Australian, and the other is a small forward capable of a bag of goals and physical intimidation. But Wallace tried to do something BIG in his couple of years at the Bulldogs, he fell flat on his ass, and now the Bulldogs are stuck with Eagleton. Thoughts...?

Imagine a coach making a decision that he thought might lead to a premiership. How could that possibly be a good thing?

Short memory. Why is it that every time this subject is discussed, it seems to begin with the incorrect assumption that Adelaide had a choice between draft pick #2 and Carey? It was draft pick #4 at the time, and any speculation that Adelaide would have given up #2 for Carey is just that - speculation.

Short memory. We were closer than some people seem to recall, and it wasn't (would not have been) Ayres' decision alone, it was a club decision.

that is absolutely correct

furthermore i have no doubt that Richmond themselves would not have traded pick 4 for Johnson if they had known it would subsequently become pick 2 (and i believe that the AFC also would not have given up 4 if they knew it would become 2) because there were 2 standout draft picks in that draft year.

the decision by the AFL to change the value of draft picks AFTER trades had been done was one of the crassest & unprofessional bits of decision-making i have seen.
