As expected, most clubs are up in arms about the Daniher contract extension.
It goes against the spirit of free agency, and at the time was clearly an attempt to get around the compensation rules.

If this was the crows, it would be an automatic draft pick sanction.

Should be stripping of first round picks for both the bombers and Brisbane if the AFL cares about fairness.

Yeah, nah. Won’t happen. It will be ticked off, how is Essendon meant to know the contract deals of another club. Play on. Get a better system.

In true AFL style a sanction should be applied to the Crows for this.

I think you mean work within the AFL's compensation rules.

Either way, the AFL makes the rules. Onus is on the AFL to change the rules if they don't like the outcomes.

this makes afl look bad and dumb, so they will sanction brissy and essendon. will prolly put it under against spirit of the game

Sanction the Crows for this. Only fair outcome.

No team would have been expected to give 5 years to a player who has barely played for years due to injury who also had reportedly mental health issues due to to the Melbourne media.

May not be within the spirit of the game, but it's within the rules. AFL's fault.
Exactly, I'd imagine heaps of clubs are looking at how they can manipulate contracts etc.

Here's a novel idea, get rid of the rubbish compensation system, and then there is no incentive to fudge contract lengths or $ amounts.

or lock contracts that result in a compensation pick.
i.e. Daniher's 3 years should be locked in. He can negotiate an extension but the 3 stay as is.

Why on earth should the Bombers be sanctioned? If there's any wrong doing its on Brisbane - Essendon would have just said if the contract offer is this we'll match it, Brisbane up their offer based on that.

Still think that leaves room for dodgyness. E.g. Club words up player, we're going to front load your deal 900k for 3 years to keep your club happy with compo then extend you for another 2 years at 400k each year. Ultimately you get $3.5 million over 5.

Get rid of the carrot to be dodgy.

Brisbane should be allowed to extend the contract, but not restructure the first three years.

It’s a dodgy deal but tough to police and not sure any rules were actually broken.
Depends on the terms of the extra 2 years IMO.
If they were originally offering him 5 years at an average of whatever, then changed it to 3yrs at higher coin so that Ess got better compo and wouldn't match to force a trade, then what are those two new years at? If it's similar coin as the first 3 years (which you'd expect in a regular extension after the year he had in 2021), then all's fair. If he's signed 2 years at significantly less and it brings his 5 year average back to what Lions were originally offering, then that's draft tampering.

Why are our picks being suspended?
If it was found to be dodgy, it would be for collusion. If Ess made comment that they'd be matching and forcing a trade if their compensation wasn't adequate, that's implicates them if it's viewed as draft tampering.
The only way Ess are clean is if they stay quiet, wait for the Lions to present their deal to Joe, then decide whether they match or take the compo.

Yeah… that’s not how it works.
You realise clubs have come out openly and said they’d match if they weren’t happy with compensation?

Essendon has nothing to do with Brisbane contracts, no matter how excited you might get at the possibility.
