Daniher - Gone!

Good move imo. Not sure why they would release it to the public now, but I'm not too fussed. Friday night was unacceptable and was clearly our worst performance in the Daniher's reign

Coincidence that the week Voss declares his intentions to coach in 08 this gets announced?

Also gives Daniher time to put himself on the market because he will coach AFL football again. He at least intends to and I reckon someone will take him.

I thought it was effective immediately. Damn. Would much rather get a coach in and let him get a feel for everything.

Would there be any point if there is no suitable replacement? I'm not saying there's not one out there...but like, who would you want to coach Melbourne this Friday night?

I don't think it'd happen that quickly. We can't expect that. I'm just saying I'd rather a permanent figure take over before the season is through. If Daniher wasn't coaching this friday, I doubt it'd really affect the result unfortunately. We can't get much worse.

Not the coaches fault his players put in a performance like that

There would be nothing wrong with appointing the 08 coach asap and having him spend the last few rounds of 07 in the box with Neale if possible.
Will also give him some time to better prepare for the drafts and pre-season etc.. and help ensure a smooth transition.

Well, you did say effective immediately. ;)

I hope that your club gets rid of your President in Paul Gardiner. I don't like him at all.

YOu guys have got a lot of injuries and I reckon that it was the wrong thing to go and sack your coach mid year.

You can't just appoint a coach in a day, it is a process that takes a minimum of 4 weeks. So if they start that in a few weeks then the new coach can be appointed promptly after round 22 and can prepare for a draft but I doubt they would want to take over this year, or if they would want to sit in the box with ND. I'm happy for Daniher to leave whenever he wants now and a fill in to take the reigns until the board finds the proper replacement.

gotta admit, i am surprised that considering the guy has been there a decade, the great job he did coaching the side in that time combined with his general personality and excellent performance in selling the club off the field - that their isn't more emotion about this decision on here about him being sacked. (especailly since gardener has been a w***er, and basically bagged out all the supporters )

seems an odd decision to me either way - you have had nightmare-ish injuries - you had just won 2 in a row (finally ) and then had a shocker against richmond and bam! he is sacked. then, oddly, he will coach out the remainder of the season - what the hell happens if the teams plays like it did in the two weeks prior to the bye?? and if they win perhaps 9 of the remaining matches??? considering their injury issues this season - i would think somewhere between 5-9 wins would have been expected??

Agreed
Maybe the board believe that a fresh start is what the club needs, bring in some fresh enthusiams.
I remember when schwab got the flick, he continued on coaching, two weeks later he quit again, cos coaching knowing you wont be there the following yr was too hard

It wasn't out of the blue. It wasn't as if Daniher began coaching in March 2007, suffered 9 losses first up, got 2 back and then put in a shocker against Richmond.

He has been at the club for 10 years. Most would agree that we have had a good, but not great list during this time. It is now 7 years since we last made the top four. How much longer did you expect us to go on without making a change?

Personally I'm glad Danihers time at Demonland has now come to an end. Remember the year before he started we were very low on the ladder. Then next year he had us in the finals. That was the start of the roller coaster ride for the next 6 years. Up Down Up Down Up Down. Then we had 3 years in succession when we made the finals. We now have this season.

It had been obvious that a) we have a soft list; b) we were never going to win a flag; c) Daniher wasn't the man to take us to a flag.

I would have liked to see him go a couple of years ago when we still had good potential seasons out of the older brigade in Neitz, Yze and crew.

Lerts just hope that hte young guys that are playing well for Sandy are given a go ahead of some of the older brigade now.

to be personally honest with you - i don't think melbourne will win a flag anytime soon because it doesn't have the supporter base, the financial power - and footy political power to be capable of creating or holding a list good enough to win a flag (without possibly "doing a hawthorn and trading away neitz, green, robbo, yze, bizzel etc and finishing on bottom with prioritys for 3 years ). i don't think you have the facilities to also gain an extra 1-2% on the opposition - and i think that where melbourne has been for the past 7 years is almost a good as you can expect to be.

thats not a personal attack on melbourne - but a belief i share with most of the victorian teams. you can't expect to have the 2nd lowest membership -and have a team capable of winning a grand final

Idiot. What is the case for your basketcase of a club.

F off to your own board

North, sorry Kangaroos, won a few flags with a smallish supporter base

Either you're an idiot or you're trying to take the piss out of our club.

All that stuff means close to f**k all when it comes to creating a playing list. Having less supporters isn't the reason we traded for Ben Holland. Having poor facilities isn't the reason Luke Molan turned into a dud. Having no money isn't the reason we lost to Carlton twice last year. All those factors can't be used as excuses for a clubs poor decisions and performances.

St Kilda overlooked Chris Judd in the draft, now imagine if they had him in the 2004 and 2005 Preliminary Finals instead of Luke Ball (nothing against Luke). Could the Saints have won a flag? Quite possibly. But they didn't make the best decision and overlooked Judd, which probably cost them a premiership. The fact that they train at Moorabbin as opposed to the nice surroundings of Subiaco means nothing.
