Re: Milburn out 1-2 weeks

Interesting....
This definitely means Lonners stays.
Drum and Gillies probably haven't put up a strong enough case yet this early in the year as a like-for-like replacement.
Either Podsiadly, to stretch the Hawks defence, or Gamble to give us more MF rotations?
I think Gamble as a safer bet against quality opposition.
The Pods experiment is best left for when we play a Melbourne or Richmond.

Re: Milburn out 1-2 weeks

Can't play Pods and Lonners together with Scarlett/Taylor/Mooney/Hawkins/Ottens/Blake

More than anything I think that is why he is not in the team.

Gillies is injured as well. I would play Drum, this is the reason why we recruited him.

Re: Milburn out 1-2 weeks

gfc.com states he is out for two weeks with a hammy.

Who will come into the squad? Post your thoughts below.

Well it means that Lonergan is a definite (not that i would suggest otherwise based on his last game).... but i am not sure we have to get in a like for like for Milburn.

This maybe the chance to bring in Gamble or Podsiadly? Maybe drop Kelly back to the half back line and use Pods or Gamble up front...

Djukerra or Gillies could be considered also.

Little injury concern on Gaj as well...light calf strain, has troubled him before, but did not look overly serious from the news story.

Re: Milburn out 1-2 weeks

It's good to have the depth at the footy club now where we can be ultra-cautious with our soft tissue management. A few years back, Dash might have returned after only a week off and potentially turned a minor tear into a more severe one.

As long as the lads are managed well through out the year and with a bit of luck, we'll be a massive force come September.

Also a good chance for Lonners and now another for a couple more weeks at senior level

Re: Milburn out 1-2 weeks

Bring in the Djekurra!

Pace for the likes of bateman and rioli............be a better match up than gamble or pods or drum........

I wouldn't think either of those players would be getting significant game time or doing a lot of damage, considering their preparation.
If it's a Varcoe-esque player where looking at, Shannon Motlop may be a chance.
Some pace into the side may not be a bad option.
Agree that Pods and Lonners on top of our usual talls makes us way too top heavy.

Rioli, yes, but not Bateman.

Shannon's been in a good paddock so i don't know how much pace he'd add.

As far as I'm aware Changa had a normal pre-season and was just out due to suspension. Rioli's no definite to be in the side this week though, and if he is he will be underdone, like you said.

Even on half a pre-season Bateman would be in the top 3 fittest blokes at the club so I expect him to play at least 80% game time. Rioli did a complete pre-season until he felt soreness so he wont be too far off it either.

I cant say I know your squad too well but speed in the back half could be crucial against what promises to be a pretty quick forward half for the Hawks (Rioli, Hooper, Bateman and Franklin are all likely to play) and bringing in another taller player does not sound like the right approach IMO - having said that you've won 2 of the last 3 cups so I wouldnt be passing judgement till after the game!!

Re: Milburn out 1-2 weeks

do you think Mitch Duncan will keep his spot? maybe pods for milhouse l would like to see gillies in the side,he makes the team so much better looking :)

I would suspect Mitch would nearly keep his spot until Varcoe returns.

Re: Milburn out 1-2 weeks

Gamble to come in.

Kelly's flexibility means that we can bring in Gamble as a similar "body type" as Milburn, even though he doesn't necessarily play the same position.

Corey also has some history as playing the mid sized defensive swing man role which provides added flexibility.

I am on record as saying that blokes need to earn their spots, and it is arguable that Gamble has the form on the board to justify selection. But, I am biased as I am a big fan of Gamble's potential, and I think we need to start to figure out what we have with him. Even without a huge bank of form behind him, he would have to nearly be the next player knocking on the door of selection.

Re: Milburn out 1-2 weeks

its a tough one - while Pods may be the next in line, against th Hawks I'd be tempted with either Drum or Djerrkura.

I agree.
I'd be leaning towards Djerrkura.

I think Gamble really needs to earn his spot...

Re: Milburn out 1-2 weeks

Depends on the Hawks I rekon. Rioli has had no game time pre season so he'd be used as a burst player if he comes in. Also Gibson will either get some sort of fine, suspension or get wacked with a wet lettuce leaf after having an end of season trip after round 1. If he misses (and he would at most other clubs nowadays) then Pods would really stretch the Hawks backline.

Pods, Djerrkurra or Motlop for me.

dj and motlop for duncan and milburn

Re: Milburn out 1-2 weeks

On form, it has to be Podsiadly. Bomber's comments in the press today indicate to me they're confident enough with him to do it.

That said, the age old issue of whether it gives us too many talls and such, will be the possible reason not.

But I think this week of all weeks is the right week to do it.

If not Pods, then Motlop and Djerrkura would also be in the frame, but if they go for a positional replacement it has to be Drum making his Cats debut (Gillies is still injured I think).
