Geelong defender Darren Milburn is expected to be handed the toughest job in the upcoming Foster's International Rules series against Ireland - that of goalkeeper.
New Australian coach Kevin Sheedy revealed on Monday, when naming his 26 man squad for the two Test series, that the goalkeeping position would go to either Milburn or Essendon's Dustin Fletcher with Milburn favoured to win the difficult role with Fletcher likely to play as the full-back directly in front of him.
And Milburn will be coached for the role by Australian assistant coach Stephen Silvagni, himself a former goalkeeper for Australia in the International Rules series in what will be a fascinating reunion for the two men.
Milburn once knocked out Carlton legend Silvagni with a heavy bump in the final round of the 2001 home and away season at Optus Oval and later needed a security escort to protect him from angry Carlton fans as he made his way from the stadium that day.
Sheedy said the job of goalkeeper was by far the toughest in the 15 man a side game, which is a combination of Australia Rules Football and Gaelic Football.
"I am not quite sure if it will be Darren Milburn or Dustin Fletcher yet," Sheedy said.
"We will have a look at that and you have to have a lot of courage and a bit of ticker to play in the goal in this game - just ask the guys that have done it before like Silvagni or Glen Jakovich."
Sheedy said the ability to "read the play" would be the most important facet in deciding who has the tough job while the ability to kick the round ball is also vital as the keeper sets up many attacking moves in the fast-paced hybrid game.
"It's a very difficult position," Sheedy said.
"It's not like in soccer where there is an off-side rule, you don’t have that in this game except for the last few metres."
Both Milburn and Fletcher are expected to play in goal during an intra-squad hit-out during the Australian team's training camp in Busselton in southern Western Australia on Sunday before a decision is made ahead of Friday week's first Test in Perth.
Wonder if SOS and Dasha have had a quiet chat about that day? Could be interesting...
