....and the "sliding doors" moment for Bolton's tenure probably hinged on Doc's first knee. The second knee was just the nail in the coffin. This is just one (pretty big) thing amongst many other factors.

I love Teague and everything about him but this apparent need to trash talk Bolts is inane. There were MANY factors that contributed to excess difficulties for him to get the team up and running - many of them out of his control. Can we not be gracious?

I just got to this post and see that the "Doc situation" got a mention. So this is an acknowledgement that I'm not the first or only one to point this out. I will, however, take credit for the "sliding doors" observation. [emoji6]

Couldn't agree more with the quantification of this argument observation - so a message to all you so called Carlton supporters out there who want to continue bad mouthing Bolton: Just stop. There's enough crap going on in this world at the moment. We don't need to round in on Bolts for any reason whatsoever. Be happy and thankful for who we've got at the helm now and leave it at that.

* If you really feel the need for negativity and vitriol I still wholly support pointing it towards Malthouse.

One must also remember that Bolts is a human being, and a highly regarded one at that. We can thank him for what he did contribute to the club and leave it at that.

Bolts came and left with good intentions and left a great footprint considering our 2 captains adored him and during his tenor we had real good team camaraderie.... we've only ever had 1 coach of our side who came, destroyed and did it all for the wrong reasons. Mick.
 
Bolton was also hamstrung by a cash strapped football dept (which was the board's fault, not his)

The board finally got their act together and actually brought in great support staff for Teague (Like Luke Power) and injected a lot more into the player development dept.

Said this before, but Brendon Bolton is welcome back at our footy club anyday. He gave five hard years of his life to our club, and I hope he gets one day another chance to coach again somewhere..
 
I'll always appreciate the work Bolts put in. You can never question his commitment, tenacity and work ethic.

To me, it just highlights that while there is some value in stability and continuity, coaches have a life cycle, and I think hearing a new voice with fresh ideas is invigorating for players. I know that you want to give a senior coach the opportunity to build their team, build their relationships with players and refine their practice over time but I tend to be of the view that unless the coach is doing an objectively outstanding job that is resonating strongly with the staff and players, who are all galvanised around a common vision and culture, you're better off bringing in a fresh voice after a few years. So I think Bolton was the right person to launch our rebuild after the Malthouse debacle, and I also think it was the right time to move him on.

Teague has really hit the ground running. I'm really pleased in the way players are demonstrating improvement under him and that the game plan is robust and should stack up under pressure against the best teams. I'm also happy that we have an ability to overcome bad patches and reclaim momentum, not something I've seen us do for a long time, a sign of tactical nous in knowing how to identify and address the catalysts in game which is important.

I'm really pleased Teague is doing well, but do I think he needs to be coach for 10 years? Only if the team is doing so exceptionally well that it would be crazy to disrupt the culture. Otherwise, I'm happy for the players and coaching team to learn what they can under him over the next 4-6 years before being ready for the next mentor in their journey.
 
Bolts was mentally shot last year- it didn't help that he knew the knives were out - stinking rotten position to be in. He'll take over from Clarkson at Hawthorn.

Anyway - I like Teague he is a Carlton bloke.

I always assumed Sam Mitchell returned to Hawthorn to take over from Clarkson eventually (possibly as soon as the end of this seasonl

Yeah bolts did his time and was in charge of a draft rebuild. He was on a hiding to nothing or everything. Love Teague .

Does anyone else feel we are playing a similar style to Adelaide in 2017 when the made the GF? Teaguey was with them then...given they went so downhill after he left i wouldn't be surprised if he was the main architect of their successful game style.

In 2017 Adelaide were the most exciting and highest scoring team in the league...known for their slick ball movement, ability to score heavily, playing 3-4 tall forwards and regularly getting goals out the back, often through Betts & Jenkins.
  • Our ball movement was very slick vs Bulldogs & most of the Geelong game...that's how we're aiming to play. We smashed the Dogs in the end by 50+ points and were up by 42 against Geelong so clearly it works when we get it right.
  • We are currently one of the highest scoring team in the league, and just put 103 points on the board in a shortened game.
  • We are playing 3 tall forwards and they are working well together...we've played JSOS as well as sort of a 4th tall forward. Martin is very good overhead so can essentially play that role while also being damaging at ground level. Adelaide played Walker/Lynch/Jenkins/McGovern.
  • Then there were numerous instances like the McKay & Eddie goals where we got out the back.
Feels great to have Teague at the helm.

Was given three seasons with a transitioning team that was gutted more and more each year, and asked to get games into the kids.

His supposed tactical stubbornness aside, I don't think he made many friends within the football department (as evidenced within the frosty draft night video when we did the Stocker deal).

By the end of it all he was just a shell of the smiling, lovable optimist that took over the role.

I don't think he made it easy for himself easy. Aside from him being down right stubborn, i've heard that he would go into these tirades that would peal the paint off the walls. I also think his game plan was far too technical, and the players had no idea what they were doing.
 


Josh Fraser is 100% spot on here, the culture of the club and playing list was totally toxic before Bolts arrived and the fact we have not had a controversial/drunken off field Incident in years ia testament to that fact.

The bloke admitted to having many sleepless nights worrying over our form and trying to figure out how to win games.

Least he really cared for the club and the players unlike his predecessor.

There is no excuse for the performance difference beaten 2019 H1 Bolton and H2 Teague other than the coach.

It was clear by the teams performance he had lost the non leadership players. They're important too. I posted about my conversation with an ex player in the bluemour file circa Dec 2018 where said player discussed a game plan that wasn't understood, unrealistic expectations, favouritism and tirades. This is all a sign of a bad coach. Proof was in the pudding. I can't believe people are finding excuses for Bolton's morale destroying 'leadership' while at the coaching helm.

I guess we're all armchair experts when we look at it from the outside. The club was in turmoil when Bolts took over, look how it's turned around.

I always saw Bolts as an educator of young men, and we can see the results of that....but I never saw him as a coach who was going to take us to the holy grail. Teaguey took over a list where a lot of the heavy lifting had been done, and seems to be more of a strategic coach than Bolts when it comes to game day.

It also helps when you bring in a bloke named Jack Russell, and all of a sudden you have nearly a full list to choose from, instead of a long list of injuries that your just filling holes in the team each week.

Educator? He spewed rhetoric each week about not getting too high not getting too low bla bla media discusses his teaching degree like it's some major achievement when we have an abundance of crap teachers in the system because barriers of entry are low (amongst other reasons). He fluffed too much pc crap instead of saying hard truths. If he wanted to be a softer voice he should pay more attention to Buckley who does a far better job of being a diplomat. Honestly not much between him and mick besides motive.

I grew up more of a Peter Russell-Clarke household but did also have a couple of Jack Russell dogs growing up.
