Ironically it would be a really good time for someone like Brendon Bolton to come in now that our young players are a little more mature and we have an older core of players however he made his own mistakes and he's at a team which funny enough is a premiership favourite, nothing to see here or is there?
Umm, isn't Bolts back at Hawthorn (coaching director)? Premiership favourite is currently sitting 17th? Did I miss something?

Other than that, great post.

I’d like to see

Back: Ben Hart/Chris Newman
Midfield: Robert Harvey
Transition/Stoppage: Nigel Lappin
Forward: Justin Leppitsch

Craig Macrae, Leigh Tudor as well

Why would any of these guys want to come to Carlton? Unfortunately, cant imagine coaching under Teague will be a massive drawcard.

How you can be at a club for 11 years, he must be the best stoppages coach in the land.

I hope we pursue new assistant coaches in the off-season, I really do.

Brett Stanton for instance, why are we still bombing it in several seasons down the line?

Why do hardly any of our forwards properly lead, why do they not CRASH packs if they can't mark it and bring it down for the smalls to crumb.

How are we STILL being caught out by the bombing it in and spring off half-back and defense gets ridiculous amount of entries to defend against and Plowman etc all get blamed.

Why are we 18th for pressure, 17th for tackles, 18th for D50 to I50, ffs.

Absolutely absurd it keeps happening over and over again.

I'm just a silly campaigner in WA watching the TV and I can pick up on that, why can't the club?

Is there some grandiose plan I'm missing, so immensely frustrating to watch as a supporter.

That pressure stat is damming. It’s totally unacceptable.

It’s Partly coaching related, partly selection related, partly player related.

We Need to prioritise a minimum level of pressure otherwise you don’t get a game but coaching needs to adapt to make it easier for players to implement.

That’s very true. Any coach aspiring to be a senior coach who wants to learn from someone and develop his skills wouldn’t come to carlton under Teague

It shouldn’t be about that it should be about turning a line that has deficiencies and ranked lowly into top 6 in relative categories

That gets noticed, Carlton is a stock that could increase your CV quite significantly

This is the text from a Herald Sun article.

It is jarring to see our selections written out like that. It really highlights our selection biases and/or our development.

A lot of good takes and fair questions there, the Newnes one being a huge pain point for the club's long-term strategy, and something I spoke about at length last year.

That Herald Sun article is insightful.

I still think that we’ve had only two of our young players (SPS v dogs in 2019 & Cuningham v dons in 2020) who have put in match winning performances in the midfield. But neither of them have played there since. It’s bizarre.

I still watch Newnes on a weekly basis and wonder what we are doing. He either needs more offensive hurt or more defensive hurt, or preferably both. I mean, a good guy, a useful leader, but nobody in AFL coaching ranks is lying awake at night wondering if Newnes will hurt them in our next game. Perhaps O’Brien’s kicking might have given them some sleepless nights. I suspect his confidence is now so shot that we’ll never know.

He's nailed it. We should be developing young players. What are we waiting for? The very mediocre Curnow, Murphy, Newnes, Casboult and Betts to get better? Our strategy and selections are garbage.

The time to play older players has passed.

"David Teague will have a consultant alongside him this season: John Worsfold," Browne said.

"The players have been told a short time ago… Teague in his development plan wanted a mentor, and knows Worsfold from the time they coached together at West Coast back around 2012 and 2013".

Yep, nice read.

I guess the other disappointing aspect is it's not as though the younger guys getting dropped are playing especially badly either. They'll have their cameo, show a few nice things then get dropped on the basis of 'development' and because it's far easier to scapegoat a younger player for grabbing 7 possessions in a loss.

I've been pushing Setterfield's case for more midfield time since he came into the squad, and could see the intent to give him roles around the ground while he was getting up to pace but he's now had a breakout season as an inside midfielder. So what do the MC do? Push him onto a wing. It's mind boggling, career killing stuff.

Cottrell should have been in the squad since day dot as our winger, because that's the position he plays, and he performed well last year. He's also always full of effort. Why is he not prioritised?

Some big decisions need to be made on some of the guys in our front half: Murphy, Betts, Casboult, Newnes etc. There's some necessity to play Betts due to Fisher and Martin missing, but if they're not performing why are they getting games? They aren't good enough players to get games on reputation, and players better than them make way at other clubs, so why do we give them the golden handshake?

Someone like Bevo is happy to make tough calls on players, and will cop low output from younger players because he realises they need time to find their feet. Over time he gets rewarded because inevitably the players adapt to the pace of the game and aren't afraid to make mistakes because their selection the following week isn't hinging on playing perfectly. We take it to the extreme and will exclude players who are playing to their capabilities.

It’s a good step in the right direction. Would prefer him in an official role as either a senior assistant or director of coaching.

He would be excellent in the director of coaching role

I really hope we do pursue some new assistants in the off-season.

Leppitsch would be nice, would be gunning for him ASAP.

As if they keep Barker, Stanton, Bruce, etc. :straining::straining:

But what do/did we honestly expect from Newnes? We can't expect every player to be one that opposition coaches worry about. I would imagine that not many teams would have more than maybe 4-5 players that opposition coaches put excessive thought into.
For what Newnes was at the Saints, and what we paid for him, I'd say he's delivering on expectations. He's never going to be a world beater. Doesn't mean he can't be a solid contributor. We could actually probably use a few more solid contributors.

My new dream coaching panel for next season.

Director of Coaching: John Worsefold
Senior Assistant/Forward: Justin Leppitsch
Midfield: Robert Harvey
Midfield Transition: Nigel Lappin
Backline: Chris Newman/Ben Hart
