I like the appointment of Worsfold - not so much for who it is but more that the club acknowledges there is a need for the mentor role.
Worsfold has the same chilled out demeanour as Teague (ironic as both were fierce on the field but so calm and composed off it), but the premiership pedigree as player and coach is sorely needed around the club.

Tom Browne o_O

I'll take it with a grain of Tom Browne flavoured salt, but that would be great if true. The sooner the better.

No room for Power?

Not a fan of Amos? He'd be last on my list to get knifed, not his fault barrage of entries every game from midfield ineptitude.

Thanks Sandra Sully! Sorry, couldn't resist. (missed it by that much)

Great, I like this. Good to see the club seeing areas for improvement and acting on them. Not sure why it wasn't done earlier, but I'm sure there was a reason.

I'd love this on Woosha's first day...

Scene 1, act 1:
Woosha walks into the coaches first post game weekly meeting. He steely eyes glances around the room...
Woosha: "Lets go around the room and introduce yourself and tell me what you have achieved thus far in your coaching career, lets start with you!" (pointing at Barker)
Barker: "yeah, nah, ummmm, I've been an assistant coach for 14 years, never seen success in those roles or even in my playing career... have completed the level 4 but never been able to get the head senior gig.."
Woosha:

But what do/did we honestly expect from Newnes? We can't expect every player to be one that opposition coaches worry about. I would imagine that not many teams would have more than maybe 4-5 players that opposition coaches put excessive thought into.
For what Newnes was at the Saints, and what we paid for him, I'd say he's delivering on expectations. He's never going to be a world beater. Doesn't mean he can't be a solid contributor. We could actually probably use a few more solid contributors.

Newnes is just a footsoldier, which isn't a problem in itself. It's more to do with the balance we've had of senior players performing to an average level, rather than getting more experience into highly talented younger players. Newnes was favoured ahead of LOB all last year, despite having very similar stats on the wing, and he actually played his best footy for us later in the year when he was shifted forward.

It's part of a bigger problem, like round 1 where Ed was inside but not tagging, while Setterfield was stuck out on the wing. Both Murphy and Betts in the side. What's the point?

You quoted me I responded. :p

I like Amos but he’s been around the club for 5+ years. Despite doing a good job it’s always best to rotate your assistants every 3 years imo to get new ideas.
Our backline has been but what’s to say it can’t be better?

He’s head of development not a line coach
Fair point. I have seen others say they'd like to see him in a midfield role and the discussion is around shuffling the deck, so no reason he couldn't be used in a different role in this hypothetical. Other than personal choice, which is of course a perfectly valid reason.

Better?!? :astonished:
I might be slightly biased, but I reckon we have one of the best back 6 in the league. They have one of the hardest jobs though, by having one of the worst defending midfields in the league. If we had a midfield that ran both ways and defended well, I reckon teams would struggle to score more than 70 odd points against us.

I think our biggest glaring issue at the club is development. Why not have the former AIS development man be the development coach for a few more years and try to improve that issue. I’d rather this as we move him to midfield development still is an issue

This is the text from a Herald Sun article.

It is jarring to see our selections written out like that. It really highlights our selection biases and/or our development.
Not one thing incorrect there. ****ing herald sun has a better idea than our coaching staff. That makes me want to cry.

as the article says though, he came in to replace a young guy who had just played 17 games. Two things here. If we didn’t believe in the young guy (O’Brien), then we should have traded him. If we did believe in him, then did we really need Newnes? Instead, we have a bob or two each way, and O’Brien looks nowhere near where he was at in 2019.

We could have a separate discussion about whether a wingman is somebody the opposition should worry about. In the modern game, I’d argue they should. But my main point is what this has done for O’Brien, more so than it is about Newnes.

Yeah cant see him being sacked. Teague has enough credentials to be backed in for a couple of seasons.

IMO the club should appoint an eminent person to be his mentor asap... Seems many clubs are doing it these days.

Also, in a different note. Remember when hardwick didn't deliver? Samething happened with bomber Thompson... And he became a dual premiership coach with an interesting resume of extra curricular activities

How you can be at a club for 11 years, he must be the best stoppages coach in the land.

I hope we pursue new assistant coaches in the off-season, I really do.

Brett Stanton for instance, why are we still bombing it in several seasons down the line?

Why do hardly any of our forwards properly lead, why do they not CRASH packs if they can't mark it and bring it down for the smalls to crumb.

How are we STILL being caught out by the bombing it in and spring off half-back and defense gets ridiculous amount of entries to defend against and Plowman etc all get blamed.

Why are we 18th for pressure, 17th for tackles, 18th for D50 to I50, ffs.

Absolutely absurd it keeps happening over and over again.

I'm just a silly campaigner in WA watching the TV and I can pick up on that, why can't the club?

Is there some grandiose plan I'm missing, so immensely frustrating to watch as a supporter.
What's the definition of insanity? Doing something over and over and expecting a different result ? Groundhog Day again coming up .

Why would any of these guys want to come to Carlton? Unfortunately, cant imagine coaching under Teague will be a massive drawcard.
Carlton mostly picks it's next coach from within , could be a senior coaches job coming up for them in a season or two , nice enough incentive .

Didn't Bolton have Walls in 2018 as a mentor ? That worked well 🙄

Thought he just moved back to Perth ?

Mark Williams / Don Pyke are embedded full time in the clubs where they are having an impact. We've decided to follow the Roos/Norf model for success.

Guessing as a consultant Worsfold will operate out of Perth and might make a few calls to Teague when he needs a chat or come to training when we are playing in Perth.

Questions need to be asked if this is a half-arsed PR stunt or serious attempt to improve the internal workings of our Footy dept.

Unfortunately, it's pretty hard to make these sorts of appointments mid year.
Leppitsch is the one who would make sense. Try to sort out a deal for Richmond to release him.
