Are we being out-coached or are players failing to execute the game plan? Game was lost tonight on goal kicking execution and turnovers in transition. Thought the game plan looked very good tonight despite our structural vulnerabilities. Some responsibility needs to be put on the players.

I am so tired of watching players who by default seem to work under the paradigm of kicking to a virtually static target. We are not a physically imposing team against most sides, we are not a quick team currently, but we have decent users and a good endurance base on paper.

We should be seeking to work our oppoonents over with smart, calculated running to shake the zone loose and put the ball out in front of those running at or away from the ball carrier as an option.

People are blasting Setterfield (who should not have been played if it was just going to be as a wingman without a real job), but in the scope of the lacksidasical way he presented at the ball carrier, he was far from alone. When players shifted from this paradigm, they would get burnt by the kicker, who had zero feel for how to put the ball out in front of them.

I put forward that we don't actually train to hit moving targets outside of F50 drills (i.e. straight line run at the ball carrier), and it shows in our kicking skills. If we do, then we need to rework those drills.

There's been an explosion in the overall quality of our handballing since Barker was sacked, and now it needs to be brought to our kicking.

I've been to a number of training sessions in the past, under Teague and Bolton before him, and there have absolutely been drills that involve kicking to space ahead of a moving target.

What I suspect may be a greater issue with our training is that a lot of those drills aren't done under pressure. They've impressed me in the past because they had us looking slick and fast. But in retrospect, maybe they're only doing so because they're essentially just rehearsed repetition. "You kick the ball to that player, then he kicks the ball to this player". Gameday, the opposition have a little something to say about it but we haven't trained to react and adjust.

I also think we're still, after years of it being the case, far too stationary through the middle of the ground. When the ball is at half back, we'll have a contest set up down the line, we'll have someone offer a short lead, and everyone else will be loitering. The best sides create space, constantly. Three players will lead in different directions, and the player with the ball will drop it into the now vacated space which conveniently has another teammate sliding into it. We're not very sophisticated with our use and creation of space.

Of course players have to take some, they'll get delisted and booted out. They do take responsibility but if you're a manager of a department and certain areas constantly fail or you adjust to fix one failing area and another starts failing then who's fault is it ultimately?

It is his fault when we hear “we’ll train for it”... we’ll same things keep happening so the training you’re in charge of isn’t working. Who is training Harry to try a new goal kicking routine each shot? Who is teaching the corralling again that crept its ugly head back up after it had disappeared the last fortnight? Who is training poor tackling technique and a game plan where we only halve the tackles of our opponents and we lose more than we’ve won.

The train has not only derailed, its been permanently removed from service and pulled apart for scrap and erased from the records.

I truly do admire Teague as a person, as a player... and even think he has a pretty good football brain. He relates well with the players and offers a lot.

The longer he's in this seat though, it becomes clear he is an excellent Assistant Coach, and not suited to the top job.

A Senior Coach needs to not only love and inspire the players, but also have the hard edge in their coaching that inspires them to go the extra mile.
All the dynasty coaches of the last 25 years have this.

, Clarkson, Hardwick.... they have great football brains, but more importantly they demand attention and demand response. They know how to relate to players and encourage them when needed, but at the end of the day the players have a healthy level of respect for them, which at time borders on a healthy fear.

The next run of games will be telling... if the team exceeds expectations, Teague probably earns himself a reprieve for 2022. If not, then I think Carlton need to ask Clarkson if he's open / interested, and if he is make the change. If he's not, then I don't think Carlton should remove Teague just for the sake of it. I don't think going to Lyon would be a good move, and could set us back.

Agree with you. I think the rebound after Barker has left has suggested he was one of the issues. I also think our forward structure hasnt been great, and part of that is coaching, the other is that we don't have a settled lineup. No Gov, No Curnow, Silvagni has missed a lot, Casboult has been out of form, TDK has been moved into Ruck. And then on the small side, Fisher, Martin, Cuningham have been in and out of the side all year.

One of our strengths is our back six/seven, but they have had much greater continuity as a unit than our forward core which isnt settled.

More of a reader than a poster but feeling compelled to offer my 2c here...

Disappointing result today, but I feel like those criticising Teague and labelling him an 'incompetent' coach haven't really considered the way he has addressed our most apparent deficiencies over his tenure. Consider the main criticisms of Carlton circulating the media since he's come on as HC...

"Carlton can't kick a winning score"- Teague comes on and we start kicking winning scores
"Carlton's slow starts are costing them games"- Teague adjusts and now we're starting well but fading late.
"Carlton's 5+ goal runs against are costing them games" - How many 5+ goals runs against have we had in 2021? Don't have the stats on this but the eye test tells me this has been mitigated significantly (particularly compared to other teams in the comp).
"Carlton's team defensive is poor & costing them games"- Even despite the result today, the last 3 weeks are looking much more promising on this front. Time will tell (if we let it and don't push Teague out prematurely).

All of this suggests to me that Teague has great capacity to acknowledge key deficiencies and implement effective solutions even WITHIN a season (very hard to do). The obvious issue here is implementing effective solutions without disrupting balance and tipping the scales in other areas. I personally feel pretty confident that Teague can get this in time if we allow this club some consistency (for once) and don't act impulsively/prematurely.

Well if you're going to post like that, feel free to do it more often.

The senior coach normally has a key role in selecting his support staff eg assistant coaches & support staff etc, let's see what comes out of the review, l believe all the coaching staff are accountable including the Senior coach.
Teague has been in the job for some time now and if the support staff are not up to the standard, why has it taken this long, he would seem to be of the view he has the right people around him.

He's in absolutely no position to determine that. Anaerobic fatigue would be the main culprit, but the AFL industry is conditioned to call that kind of excuse 'soft'.

Some incisive posts on here. I think the club is doing the right thing in giving him until at least the end of this season to turn the ship around. I really hope he has it within him,but as as other posters have noted, his and the MC’s judgement this season has left me incredulous
He has 6 games to show some selection integrity and promote some young blues from within the ranks. I think he gets hung up on big name players, reputations and is somewhat starstruck, hence I question his judgement which is a big concern as a head coach. Go Blues
