Things with Warner have been tipped on their head. He is averaging 52 in tests, 21 in ODI and 26 in T20.

When he does well like he did at Perth and Hobart he is amazing but when he doesn't, he is truly awful. The question is, how often will it be the former?

Im not a warner bagger, but the indians were bowling rubbish at the end.

I think he has plenty of talent but needs patience and discipline (see aaron finch (as in he doesn't have discipline or patience either))

On the other hand mike hussey and david hussey know when to hit and when to tip and run.

Definitely a talent but <shrug> will he be the next matthew hayden or the next philip hughes... its his choice.

I think David Warner showed real maturity in his two knocks in Hobart. We all knew he could murder bowling when the conditions suited, but his batting here on a less than plumb pitch was excellent. I for one no longer doubt that he is here to stay. I also think his bowling is worth developing.

Interesting timing on this discussion. If Clarke is unable to play the Boxing Day test - who captains? I think Watson would definitely be reaching his level of incompetence if he went any higher in the leadership structure. Arguably already there as VC. Hussey might be a worthy choice to fill in, and this would also prevent the appearance of naming a successor. Looking down the list of players - Cowan has a great cricket brain and seems like a thoughtful mature individual. He could potentially fill in. I suppose there is also an outside chance that they would bring Bailey in. There are worse choices they could make in terms of finding a replacement for Clarke in the middle-order, and he's a proven captain. I don't see it happening though.

They could do worse than Warner. Of the current team, he's the only on I could see being the long-term successor to Clarke as captain, so it might not be a bad idea to see how he goes. With an understanding that he'd have the likes of Hussey and Cowan there to advise him I think Warner might be a good choice.

When everybody was losing their minds over him being a destructive T20 batsman, all he wanted to talk about was how desperate he was to prove himself worthy of a Baggy Green - based on that, I was hoping he'd make it.

I think Warner (and Hughes) are both very mentally tough youngsters, who have massive drive and determination to be quality, long term Test Cricketers for Australia; I hope they both make it, as they'd be a great pair to build the future around - if Khawaja can reach that level, all of a sudden, we have the makings of a very strong batting order for the next decade.

Hughes will be in Captaincy talks in the not too distant future.

I think Warner is an option long term, but in a one-off or two-off (Sydney follows back to back after Melbourne), then probably Hussey. The only thing against him is his previous captaincy experience. He captained Australia in a three match ODI series against New Zealand. They went like this:

Australia lost the first match by 10 wickets; the only such loss in Aussie ODI history;
New Zealand won the 2nd and third matches chasing down scores in excess of 300 on both occasions.

It was hands down Australia's worst ever ODI series result.

EDIT: I wrote that last bit from memory. The details are

2006-07 Chappell Hadlee series.

Match 1: Aus 148 all out (49.3 ov); NZ 0-149 (27.0 ov) won by 10 wickets;
Match 2: Aus 4-336 (50 ov); NZ 5-340 (48.4 ov) won by 5 wickets;
Match 3: Aus 5-346 (50 ov); NZ 9-350 (49.3 ov) won by 1 wicket.

Can't say I'm real convinced on Ed Cowan yet. However, Warner continues to prove himself (at least in my eyes). As mentioned by many commentators, and himself that he's an aggresive batsman and loves to play big shots, he's shown he's more than capable of slowing things down, not playing at temptation balls.

I'd love to see Warner and Hughes open the batting. They're both very composed. Hughes after taking time out, has come back very refined.

hughes seems too timid in interviews and looks almost too shy. maybe once he settles in he might get better

I've never noticed Hughes being that way in interviews. Wouldn't be a captaincy contender anyway IMO

You don't need to be loud and outwardly brash to be captain. Glass has done a fine job for the Eagles in a very much unseen role.
