We get the Russia v Serbia tie on Fox Sports 2 starting Saturday morning at 8:00am. IMO it’s far and away the best tie and I’m really looking forward to it. Some of those match-ups are going to be really fascinating.USA begins the defence of its title when the first round of the 2008 Davis Cup by BNP Paribas gets underway this Friday, with seven of the world’s top ten in action.
The largest annual international team competition in sport has attracted 127 entries in 2008, with a total of eight World Group first round ties and 16 Zonal Group I and II ties taking place on 8-10 February.
USA faces a tough away trip to Vienna against Austria on indoor clay, with the hosts looking to secure their first victory in three meetings between the two teams. The USA team includes its four final heros, Andy Roddick, James Blake, and Bob and Mike Bryan, while Stefan Koubek heads a full-strength Austrian team.
Last year’s beaten finalist Russia also has a difficult tie at home in Moscow against Serbia, who include the newly crowned Australian Open champion Novak Djokovic, alongside Janko Tipsarevic and doubles specialist Nenad Zimonjic. Marat Safin returns to the Russian team that also features Nikolay Davydenko, Mikhail Youzhny and Dmitry Tursunov.
Australian Open finalist Jo-Wilfried Tsonga is set to make his Davis Cup debut for France against Romania away in Sibiu.
In other matches, Czech Republic faces Belgium in Ostrava; Israel is at home to Sweden in Ramat Hasharon; Argentina hosts Great Britain in Buenos Aires; Germany meets Korea in Braunschweig; and Peru takes in Spain in Lima.
The eight first round winners will contest the World Group quarterfinals on 11-13 April, while the eight first round losers will compete in the World Group Play-offs on 19-21 September.
