Draft Expert Davo-27's 2025 Draft Thread

Not sure if this is the right thread but can Gold Coast pick up both Uwland and Patterson as Academy kids? Or is it just the one due to the recent draft changes?

It could come down to how Petracca trade goes and what draft hand Gold Coast has at the end of it.

They changed the points system to make it harder for clubs to match points. Stopping them from stockpiling a heap of back end picks, now they have to try and trade first and second round picks to match bids, and currently Gold Coast would be able to match those bids however they (G.C) will try to move their early first rounders back a little bit.

Teams can match as many kids as they have points (and list spots) for, in this draft.

What is unclear is if you can take a points deficit two years in to the future.

Currently Gold Coasts academy crops for 2026 and 2027 look a little lean, so they may try and load up on as many kids as they can this year, and be willing to take a points deficit in to next year’s draft.

be nice if they announced the changes given trading has alreday commenced and would no doubt influence what clubs do thsi year...
They did say that the discount will be looked at and whether it is severely changed or taken away were the two most obvious changes. Clubs are aware of this.

2026 top 7 prospects from my pov

1. Doug Cochrane - Port NGA? unconfirmed
2. Cody Walker - Carl FS/Rich NGA
3. Lucas Robinson - Frem NGA
4. Archie Van Dyk
5. Arki Butler
6. Leo Steed
7. Matthew Owen - Bris

I also really like what I've seen from these 2026 prospects

Rucks - Harry Van Hattum, Ethan Herbert
KPP - Wil Malady, Jack Pickett, Koby LeCras, Aidan McCartney - Syd
Mids - Cain Florance, Gus Kennedy
Outside types - Guy Jenkin - Syd
Forw - Koby Moir, Marlon Neocleous

Interesting to hear your opinion on Robinson e.g. Strength and weaknesses?

Looks a bit slow, and can only play inside mid. I was wondering if he would slide in his draft year like Robertson, de Boer and a few other slow inside mids.

Just wondering who you all think would go higher if they were in the same draft out of Willem and Zane Duursma. Take recency bias out of things who would you rate as the better prospect and take out of the two?

I've seen some shit from Zane that is next level. Dunno if he mentally has it,as you need to really want it, but 150% has a ridiculous heap of talent.

No offence to North, but some players need to be in the right environment to develop properly (or just take longer) I still have plenty of faith in Zane and part of me thinks if he wasn't picked so high and had less pressure on him, he may have showed abit more then he currently has. In saying that I'm glad north didn't trade him because whatever they got for him wouldn't have been sufficient enough to warrant trading him.

I saw him play u16s champs which gives me an early look at what he could be and he was an outside running hbf that had great athletic potential, so much so I commented he reminded me of Weddle in his draft year running off hb with his mullet flapping in the wind, I saw he played inside mid for the u17s futures, but as I havnt seen much junior footy this year I'm basing a lot of this on u16s footy and potential.

I've been thinking about the fact clubs don't like inside mid only type players, mainly because they lack athleticism or flexibility which is valuable if they can't crack inside mid at the highest level, over the years I have valued guys highly thinking if only they got a chance they would perform at the highest level, only to see some of these guys not given a chance for being inside mid only players.

Zane was a unique story, he was always a good medium forward, but that doesn't make you go high in the draft, so he was pushed or wanted to play inside mid, now he was good at getting high poss numbers, but not so good at using the footy or winning contests, so as a mid he was underwhelming imo, but he would average 30 touches or thereabouts, which raised his value and saw him go high, but now he's being used as a medium forward only which is his best position but of lower value, if he is med forw only, then pick 5 was a very high pick for a position which isn't of high value, he was recruited at that position to play midfield and get 30 disposals which isn't his best position, but of higher value, it's a conundrum...do you play him at his best position and undervalue his pick or at his OK position and value his pick, a decision North have to make and so far they have chosen his best position as a medium forw and he is still to cement a spot in the 22, if i was North id just play him for a full year in the starting 22 and see if he makes it. He has good athleticism, marking and goal kicking power, just see if he can become a Gunston type player? Or unleash his midfield ball accumulating potential?

A nice summation. You would think that an ideal use of his talents would see him with some more midfield rotations and then providing a threat forward, trouble with North is that they are stacked with mids and finding that midfield/stoppage time would prove difficult.

Have you had much of a chance to see Robey? If you have, how would you compare the two? Seems a bit similar where Robey has shot up boards on the back of an injection into the midfield, that's not to discount his effectiveness as a forward and finding the ball though.

Old mate, who would you rather have on your list at Hawthorn? BGZ or Hammies Lawla?

Wonder how he would go off half back, could be a decent spot to try him in if it doesn't work up forward

I have watched 2/10 u18s champs games, when I finish watching the rest I will put out my first real 2025 list and then do a Phantom, I also have to watch the u16s champs and give everyone a heads up to the talent for 2027...

Awesome.

Look forward to those.

From the small sample of Robey I have seen, he seems like a mid that bursts through centre clearances which catches the eye, similar to why Clarry rose in his draft year, that big body athletic potential to break lines at centre clearance is an ability that excites recruiters I would think, that's my first reaction, he also kicked a bag in a game, so he can kick goals which is important to know, seems good, but I need to catch up on a bunch of games to make a proper evaluation.

How Dyson Sharp isn't consensus number 1 pick after seeing most of the champs is criminal, this would be like having N Daicos not in the top 3, oh wait he went pick 4 and some so called experts supported that at the time, I take 1 season off and the media shit the bed...

I’m pretty keen for the Eagles to call out Sharp and Duursma at 1-2 Davo-27. We need him even more than pretty much every other team with our lack of defensive inside mids and to balance Reid and Hewett.

I'll have him at pick 1 in my rankings, i was surprised to see him in random spots pre and post champs on some lists, i thought maybe they had some justifications for it, nope...

Ceiling : Brownlow, Norm Smith or AA?

100% there is alot of underestimating of sharp imo
should be top 2 pick with the performances he has put in the last 2 years

His speed is being over done and we all seen what langford was able to produce last season and Sharp has been doing that for 2 full seasons now against men in the SANFL

I would be more than happy for Richmond to call out his name at #3
250 game player if ever i seen
