They literally and physically go into towns and beat up Nazis. I don’t know how anti Nazi you want them to be 😂😂.

This is one of the official club logos.

Do they? like real nazis? or sky news watchers?

Hardcore German far right, physically attack immigrants, Jews and gays and smash up their businesses types.

So yeah, real ones. Unless that’s not enough for them to be Nazis for you?

St Pauli don't look silly because their brand is an authentic extension of the club's history, community and culture. (It's why I'll always back in NTUA at our games because of where it came from)

IMO Tampa Bay and Pittsburgh do look silly. Like Disney-fied sports teams. It works in the US because that's precisely what the market wants.

I agree. I just don't agree that "Pirates" is the way to do this.

Not liking Pirates as a hypothetical brand doesn't automatically correlate to support for "a dated 90s franchise brand". I'd also add that, in my mind, Pirates theme IS ALSO a dated 90s franchise brand.

We have the answer to our branding problems and it's already in play. We just need sharp minds at the helm (see what I did there?) to refocus our brand on the things that make us the single most unique club in the AFL.
The naming of the Pittsburgh Pirates was a very dated 90s branding decision... but the 1890s

We should always remember Black Jack Anderson in these should we re-brand to Pirates debates, an african- american pirate who's reign of terror across WA & SA in the 1800's was highlighted by murdering, enslaving & raping the indigenous population.. if we want to be so bloody righteous about everything.

This is where I get confused with your stance. This applies equally to a Pirate themed brand.

I guess I see Pirates as something that can be more readily linked to the the club. Maritime theme, black and white, famously raucous, passionate fanbase, invaders from another league, everyone hates us, etc etc etc.

While Pirates could be seen as a 90s brand as well, I think it's something would fit better with an older club than Power did. Pittsburgh have been called the Pirates since 1891, they didn't make an abrupt change after the first Pirates of the Carribean movie. It's got elements that people can sink their teeth into from a branding perspective, and it's a more classic style mascot nickname, like Tigers, Eagles, Saints etc.

Power is just sort of nothing. It's abstract and more difficult to create effective branding around. Like Strikers, Heat, or Spirit. I think the disconnect between this modern abstract branding and the storied history of the club really hurt our early branding efforts.

We elected to operate in the standard AFL model of having a mascot nickname, but we did it badly, throwing away too much of what made our pre-AFL brand great, and it hasn't been successful. I think something like Pirates would have been much more successful assuming we remained within the standard AFL model (which may have been a condition of entry from the AFL).

I've posted before but I think we needed to try to keep the branding closer to what we had before. Maybe we should have entered the league with an alternate colour prison bars in order to maintain that immediately identifiable guernsey design. It's possible the AFL vetoed that and insisted we go in a more American franchise type direction, or it might have been the club that decided that. I don't know. Either way I don't think it worked.

Fully agree here, I just think we need to be brave enough to take a big step and drop the nickname. I don't think anyone will miss it. There will be an initial uproar because people fear change, but I think the Power branding really holds us back from what we could be. Just bin it.

We have so much history and imagery to base a brand off of. Every time we reach into the heritage bag we pull out gold and the supporter base eats it up. Port Adelaide is a stronger brand than really any nickname could be.

While I do like Pirates as a nickname i'd absolutely love to see us completely eschew standard AFL branding tropes and lean into our uniqueness as you say.

Speaking of Nazis...Grammar Nazi here. Watch your apostrophes please

Yeah, I could get onboard with dropping the Power (and any other nickname that's an official part of the team name) and go with a soccer-style convention where the nickname is an alternate name for the team. No-one ever says the Manchester United Red Devils, the Arsenal Gunners, or the Everton Toffees - it's either the team name (plus FC) or the nickname.

Port Adelaide FC and something like the Black Diamonds could work provided it was one or the other and not the Port Adelaide Black Diamonds.

I remember, mid 90's sometime between the "Port got the licence" and the PORT POWER reveal that Channel Ten had the Exclusive on "Port Adelaide will be named the Black Diamonds and here is the guernsey" it might have been the mustachioed George but I was at a Glenelg-supporting friend's house so nobody was quiet and I only caught a glimpse and it still annoys me to this day because I never fully appreciated it

I was in the Simpson desert otw to the Birdsville races with a bunch of QLDers and heard about the “reveal” night over some very scratchy AM (??) radio near Poeppels corner. Unforgettable. Mind you only one of the QLDers could even spell “AFL” at that time.

There’s a lot of imagery to play with for the Pirates nickname. Really like the skull and cutlasses, and the arm holding a cutlass as a link between the nicknames as it was how we originally depicted the Power nickname obviously. You can see a few pirate flags used over the years here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jolly_Roger

Honestly the fact that the biggest symbol for pirates is a flag is pretty cool to me. Winning the flag is what you play footy for, but flags are pretty synonymous with cheer squads too. Wouldn’t mind seeing a Jolly Roger with the skull being replaced by the PA monogram flown at games.

Port supporters: We are Port Adelaide, not Port Power. Stop changing our guernsey. Stop changing our logo. Less teal, more black and white. Embrace our history. Embrace our traditions. We are one club, not two. We are not a franchise.

Also Port supporters: Lads, I am a tad bored. Let's discuss a complete rebrand from Power to Pirates again. Also, here's a generic American-style logo I found on Google we could model our new identity off.

Our identity being a bit shit wouldn't come up all the time if we had a good identity.

We've been on a pretty rough journey with our branding over the last 28 years, with bullshit limitations placed on us and then mistakes flowing into mistakes. What we've landed on is super generic. We wear a create-a-team guernsey in our colours. We present ourselves as the embodiment of David Koch's ideal of being everyone's second favourite team, except everyone hates us anyway.

Time to do something different instead of plodding along with this 4/10 ode to genericism identity.
