Dayle's been granted a release form his contract & has returned to WA.

First things first. I hope that he finds what he's looking for with his life, and that he enjoys what he finds. The decision he's made here wouldn't have come lightly, so I wish him and his all the very best in finding that.

If he decided though that there is enjoyment in playing footy for a WA team (AFL or WAFL), should we consider him?

His AFL career is over unless he dominates WAFL for two years and then trains with an AFL club for 3-4 months and demands selection. With the earlier Preseason and Rookie draft which limits a players ability to train with a club, I am not sure if any club would take the risk with him

Well he likes playing in the wafl so there is nothing wrong with that. If that's what is best for his life power to him.
A couple of years down the track and his goals, attitude and what he wants may change. He will have to prove his desire though. That is the time when he gets to train over preseason in the hopes of getting a rookie spot.

he hasnt been released from contract just come home to get his license the official line.

Not quite. From the article, he originally returned home to get his licence as that might give him more freedom in Melbourne, but that didn't pan out and he felt better while at home.

We are releasing him from his contract and that enables him to play footy back in Perth. That’s a good thing for him. He will probably enjoy that because it is not as serious or as under the microscope as what the AFL is.

Yeah this. He'd have to just smash it in the WAFL and maybe have final series like Krakouer had a few years ago before he'll even get a look-in. But he's still very young, so ya never know. He's got lots of time to settle again and have another crack. There's no doubt that mature age recruits are popular enough. But it sounds like he's psychologically a long way from even wanting to have a crack right now.

I'm not across the WAFL recruiting system these days, but would he be even able to slot into a WAFL club this late in the piece?

I'd hope and expect that Freo'll go nowhere near him. He'll have a reality check one day and will inevitably regret not pulling his head in sooner and it'll be his cross to bear. If he hates going to bed at reasonable hours and training for a living, he's gonna hate it when his parents make him move out and get a day job.

In theory he could go to any club, all though the point system could limit him to this original club. Surely his fitness would be up to WAFL level.

Not necessarily, his commitment to regular training was one of his issues.
Luke Hodge actually said he went from being a guy who trained when he wanted and played when he wanted into the Hawthorn system and couldn't deal with showing up on time.

If that was the case, he shouldn't have been drafted. Simply does not have the commitment to play, but would be great in a country league.

Yeah, if you can't give the necessary committment and respect when challenged by a deadset legend like Luke Hodge, and within a proven system like Hawthorn has, you aren't really ever going to "get it".

The kid was offered the world and walked away because it was all too hard.

I fear that a slippery slope awaits him if he can't find a way to escape the dickhead hangers-on who are influencing him at present.

Personally wouldn't go near if I were our recruiters for 3+ years. If he chops up the wafl for that time then maybe. Being based in wa means we are one of two clubs that'll ever take him on again (he claimed to be homesick) and in reality we probably wouldn't and neither would the eagles for some time. It is extremely unlikely we'll ever see him at afl level which really is a shame.

I'm sure Boddington or Williams would happily give him a game and they have a lot more to spend than most WAFL clubs :D

TBH it was pretty selfish of Hawthorn to draft him at all in the main draft - should of been left to be drafted as rookie by either of the WA clubs.

After not being drafted the first time he chose to stay in WA versus getting away from bad influences and going interstate to play SANFL etc. - straight away that indicated and a Swans mate agreed with me that family was still more important to him than ensuring a chance in the AFL. After a good year for swans with Sonny Walters helping him out, Hawthorn convince him to go to Melbourne which takes him away from that support structure he needed just so they can have the chance of getting a highly talented player for nix in the draft. Sure Garlett was involved in this as well but Hawthorn I don't think had his best interests in mind - their interest was the need to get talented players despite finishing high on the ladder with late draft picks.

If he had stayed in WA as rookie for Freo say then he would of had his family and Sonny to help him and he could have adjusted better to the demands of being an AFL player. Rookie contract so little lost for either party if it doesn't work out. As it stands now he will struggle to get another rookie listing even.
