Dayne Beams ruled out indefinitely with knee tendinitis, Brisbane Lions sweat on Dayne Zorko report

The Lions also face an anxious wait to see if another star player is available for the opening round after Dayne Zorko’s number was taken for striking in Sunday’s 39-point loss to GWS.

The fate of GWS forward Jeremy Cameron also rests with the MRP after he was booked for rough conduct on young Lion Rhys Mathieson.

Zorko was booked for striking GWS skipper Phil Davis on the very next play.

Zorko Accepts Sanction

Dayne Zorko has accepted a one-match sanction handed down by the AFL’s Match Review Panel for striking the Giants’ Phil Davis during the third quarter of Sunday’s match.

Based on the available video evidence and a medical report from the GWS Giants Football Club, the incident was assessed as intentional conduct with low impact to the head.

The incident was classified as a two-match sanction; however because Zorko has no applicable record and after reviewing the evidence and assessing the options, the Club and Zorko decided to take an early guilty plea.

The penalty means the Lions will be without the playmaker for their Round 1 match against the West Coast Eagles in Perth.

“The Club weighed up the options and thought the best course of action was to accept the penalty handed down by the MRP,” said General Manager of Football Matthew Francis.

Zorko turns up heat on Lions midfield

BRISBANE vice-captain Dayne Zorko says he is “sick of losing’’ and it is up to the high-priced Lions midfield to do something about it this Saturday night against Collingwood. Brisbane coach Justin Leppitsch took aim at his big name on-ball division after the 77-point loss to Port Adelaide last Sunday.

Zorko said the midfield group had accepted responsibility for their “extremely poor’’ performance against the Power and were determined to make amends against the Magpies. “We’re the senior part of the team, the most experienced part of the team and we probably let each other down and the whole team down by performing the way we did on the weekend,’’ Zorko said.

“For us as midfielders to let them (the young Brisbane backline) down as well and allow the ball to come in that often, is very disappointing from our midfield group. “We’ve focused on it this week, we’ll train it this week, we’ll prepare really well and hopefully play Collingwood and get a win.

“There’s always chats in the dressing room of what we can do better. We don’t necessarily wait for the coaches’ feedback. You normally know out on the ground where you went wrong. I think that’s one area the group has really taken forward steps this year, is having those conversations inside the changerooms, telling people where they went wrong and where they went right as well.’’

Zorko said he doubted there would be any fireworks if the Lions come across former teammate James Aish this Saturday night at the Gabba after he left the Gabba for the Magpies in the off-season. “If the opportunity comes and he needs to be tackled, he’ll get tackled. It’s just another game. With players changing clubs so frequently these days I think things like that get missed a little bit,’’ he said. “It would have been great if he hung around. The decision’s been made now and it’s over to us to play. He’s made the right decision for himself and that’s fine.’’

Collingwood is under the pump after a poor start to 2016 and Zorko said Brisbane needed to keep the pressure on the Pies. “They’re obviously a proud club and they’ll be thinking what a great opportunity to come up to Brisbane and silence the critics,’’ he said. “ It’s our job to not let them do that. it’s really important we come out and bring energy that we have at the Gabba and prevent them from getting the game on their terms.’’

In the aftermath of the public spat between Lions deputy chairman Leigh Matthews and Suns chairman Tony Cochrane on Tuesday, Zorko said he supported having two teams in Queensland. “Absolutely. We want the game to grow don’t we?’’ the former Gold Coast junior said.

Dayne Zorko says it will take time for the Brisbane Lions to repair the damage done by horror loss to Collingwood

“We still probably don’t know what happened last week against Collingwood but it was such a disappointing effort,’’ he said.

“Our focus against Melbourne was to really play out the four quarters and get back to some of the good things we did in the first six to seven rounds to rebuild our confidence.

“It was a much better effort which gives us a platform to keep building on. It was certainly a lot better than last week but we’ve still got a lot of improvement left in us.’’

Zorko addressed a players-only huddle at the end of training at Wesley College in Melbourne on Saturday afternoon and held court for several minutes.

He said it was vital that the leadership group maintained high standards.

“With such a young group, the leaders need to bring those standards every week. The young guys will follow,’’ he said.

“There are still elements of our game we obviously need to work on at training because we need to get things right against Hawthorn this week.’’

How good is this bloke!? Seriously in AA form. I'd have him on par with DBeams and Rocky now. He is just as good as those two in his own way. Another 23 possessions, 10 contested, 5 clearances, 9 tackles and 2 goals yesterday. Just superb.

His year has been fantastic. He's borderline AA and in a poor team, that's saying something. If we can get Beams, Rockliff and Zorko on the park as our starting on ball set up, it should be a bloody dangerous combination. Just need them all playing together.

Dayne Zorko says Saturday’s QClash is start of Brisbane Lions’ 2016 salvage mission

BRISBANE vice-captain Dayne Zorko says QClash 12 at Metricon Stadium on Saturday is the highly charged start of a salvage mission.

The Lions sit in 17th place on the ladder with a 1-13 record and are $4.60 underdogs to topple the Suns ($1.20), who snapped a 10-game losing streak in emphatic fashion last weekend.

But Brisbane’s standout player in 2016 says the determined Lions will enter the derby with fresh legs and clear heads after the bye and there would be no better way to claw back some pride than by upsetting the Gold Coast.

“There’s no doubt it’s been a rough start to the year but we want to give this back-half of the season a red-hot crack,’’ Zorko said.

“Coming off the bye could potentially be an advantage for us. The boys got the chance to get away and freshen up physically and mentally and are looking forward to the challenge.

“We always talk about wanting to be the best team in Queensland. I’m sure both clubs want to be the most dominant side in the state. That’s something that drives the boys.

“I don’t think that motivation will ever change. The QClash is getting to that point where ladder positions don’t matter and it is always a really tough contest.’’

Five to watch: v Adelaide Crows

Dayne Zorko has had a strong year and is currently ranked 16th in the Schick AFL Player Ratings – the team’s highest.

And after recording 38 disposals the last time we met, Zorko will be looking to help the senior players lead the young ends of the field.

But it’s not up to Zorko alone, with a lack of leaders spread across the field, Justin Leppitsch said it’ll come down to time and experience.

"We don’t have a lot of senior players to be honest,” said Leppitsch.

“We’ve got 5 or 6 and you need 15 or so leaders in a team to step-up.

"Its hard because our forward line might have one experienced player out of six, our defence is the same.

"Our bookends of the game are very young.

“We just need to keep the games going into them to build the cohesion."

LOCKING away Dayne Zorko on a reported $2 million, four-year deal was some of the smartest money spent by the Brisbane Lions in recent times.

Why? In an era when plenty of onballers rack up cheap possessions, Zorko's touches count towards where it matters most – on the scoreboard.

For impact forward of centre, we expect plenty from goalkicking stars such as Robbie Gray, Patrick Dangerfield, Marcus Bontempelli, Luke Shuey and Luke Parker.

But Zorko has topped them all in 2016; no mean feat given the season the Lions have endured.

Among midfielders who average more than 20 disposals from at least 10 games this season, Zorko leads the AFL for score involvements (13.9 points per game) and average goals (1.2).
