I've only seen a couple of trailers, and I'm still waiting for the 'Gametrailers' review as I don't respect IGN's opinion at all.

But what's the verdict? I love Survivor Horror games. -Especially Resident Evil 4 (and the other REs), Silent Hill 4, Project Zero. What I don't like are games like Half Life 2 that just drag on, get repetitive, and lacks any compelling story. The latest Doom was crap as well. Gears of War rocked. And Bioshock had all the right things but didn't move along at quite the right pace. I'm a little picky, but normally I love my Horrors and FPS equally as much.

Any advice?

Grab Dead Space, for sure. It feels like a combination of Res Evil 4 / Doom 3 / BioShock

One of the best TP Survival Horrors I've played and it's only early, early days for me (have been told it get's better and better as the game goes on)

Sounding pretty good. How does Dead Space compare directly to Resident Evil 4?

It's hard to say, Resident Evil 4 is my favourite game of all time and I'm only about 5 - 10 minutes into the 2nd chapter, but so far.....

It's faster paced than RE4, it's more atmospheric than RE4, but I can't see it being as diverse as RE4.

The locations are much more like Doom 3 locations (and set up as well with pitch black areas much like they had).

The weapons are very different to RE4 (i.e they are all cutting tools as opposed to traditional weapons) so it much more close combat, melee and curb stomping.

There are weapon upgrade systems and a shop like RE4 where you can purchase new weapons / ammo etc. and you can also upgrade the weapons and your suit.

The game also has Stasis (slowing down the enemy) and Kinetics.

If you're unsure, grab it from EB and if you don't like it return it within the 7 days.

But, if you enjoyed RE4, I think you'll enjoy this

Gametrailers review is up; was quite a favorable review.

I just to got Chap 4 last night, averaging about an hour per chapter. Would highly recommend this game; I haven't been hooked onto a game like this for ages.

It's more Resident Evil then Gears of War cos of the limited ammo and inventory space... and reminds me of "Event Horizon" quite a bit. Not sure if that's a good or bad thing ;)

Tricky decision. I'm so tempted to just buy this and hammer it over the weekend. With Gears of War 2 and Fallout 3 coming out though, I don't want to get FPS burnout. :p

FO3 isn't an FPS though?

None of them are. Dead Space / Gears 2 / Fallout 3 are all Third Person Shooters (well, technically FO3 is an RPG)

(although I believe that with FO3 you can choose between FP and TP view a la Oblivion)

But, I think he was just saying FPS without thinking and he actually meant TP

Hmm.. I wasn't even thinking about what I was writing. I've gotten into a habit of calling every shooter a FPS.

Is there much story to it? Many other characters?

Surely it needs something to make it more than just a decent corridor shooter.

Noticed there's a extra costume on the Playstation online store which is free "for a limited time". Might be worth downloading even if you don't have the game (I don't have the game myself, so hoping it will still work later if I do get it). I assume it'll eventually cost $5 (iirc?) like the other new costume there. Was about 11mb to download.

I'm gonna give it a download, might not even get Dead Space, or ever play it, but a free 11MB download is too good to pass up(And takes about 30 seconds to download too!), it will still work as long as you keep the download there and just don't go to install it yet, I would guess it will go to $4.95 as that is what the Scorpian Suit is.

Without giving too much away, there is 2 other members of your crew who you correspond with frequently (they correspond via a video link system)....and you run in to them from time to time.

I'm only at Chapter 5, I've heard the story etc. gets better and better.

It's a phenominal game so far, one of the best TPS Action games I've played.

I have d/l'd the free suite, yet to put it on though, may with the 2nd play through

The weapons in this game are insane

Picked this up yesterday and clocked up a couple of hours.

Amazing game in every sense of the word.

The weapons are a real innovation, the graphics are absolutely stunning and the sound is brilliant.

Pardon my ignorance, but what do these 'costumes' actually do?

The suits increase in level (i.e. you start with 1, upgrade to 2, 3 so on).

The downloadable suits are Level 5 suites....giving you more armour protection and a larger oxygen supply for when you get into vaccuum areas.

Played a couple of hours this morning with my Sennheiser headphones on. One of the most amazing features of the game is the sound.

Second to none IMO for sound quality.

Been playing Fable 2 a lot, but have managed to finish 3 missions on this.

Great game not quite Bioshock IMO but still very well executed, and from EA who would of thought.

Should give it a good flogging over the next couple of days, try and finish before Fallout 3

BioShock's story was better IMO, but again IMO, I think Dead Space has it covered on gameplay / graphics / sound

I can honestly say it is one of the best Survival Horror / Action games I have ever played

In the end we are pretty lucky to have 2 such quality games. I havent finished Dead Space yet so I will reserve judgement until then but Bioshock is easily my favourite next gen game. Gameplay is harder to compare as one is a 1st person shooter vs 3rd person.

As for graphics maybe you havent played Bioshock in a while but the graphics are superb. It doesnt try to be overly realistic but the graphics and artistic direction work together seemlessly to create the atmosphere.

Sound I agree with you, Dead Space is unbeliveable especially the zero gravity and vacumm sections.

What a freakishly scary game! It's hard to tell if it's underrated or overrated now because so many people are on the bandwagon, but it's awesome either way!

You're right, we are lucky to have 2 great games.

BioShock is still fresh in my mind, so I'm not forgetting anything.

Remember, I said IMO. The art direction is better in BioShock, no doubt. BUT, IMO the actual graphics are better in Dead Space (i.e. the character models etc.)

Gameplay is hard to compare as you have a FPS vs. a TPS, but I simply mean I'm having more fun with the DS gameplay than I did with BioShock, and I love BioShock so that's no mean feat.

Either way, two awesome games

They suck, and if you don't kill them straight up they turn all the corpses in the room into those praying mantis things.

I have only just finished chapter 3. Got stuck in a section where I'd saved and run out of ammo, so I had to keep repeating the same room over and over until I killed that monster that drags you into its hole. Managed to get it with 4 round thankfully.

What's the 360 load times like? On PS3 it takes forever to start again once you've died :(
