The Carlton Football Club has established criteria in the decision making process for the recruitment of players and confirms that the ultimate decision rests with the Match Committee. The Carlton Football Club Board is not involved in decisions on the recruiting of players unless it involves a player outside the Club’s Youth Policy, which was instituted by the Football Department, or agreeing on contract terms.

Speculation that the Carlton Board has interfered with the recruitment of players has been strongly denied by Carlton President Graham Smorgon. Senior Coach Denis Pagan confirmed the decision on the selection of players for the Carlton Football Club is made by the Match Committee in consultation with the National Recruiting Manager.

“At Tuesday’s Pre-season Draft we confirmed that Cameron Cloke was the best player for the Carlton Football Club with our available selection and we are delighted to have Cameron at Carlton. The players have certainly welcomed Cameron to the Carlton fold and we believe he will be a real asset to the Club going forward,” said Denis Pagan.

“In relation to Ty Zantuck, he joined our pre-Christmas training program on November 6th, without any guarantee, at my invitation, to give him the opportunity to perhaps be selected in the draft. It was decided several weeks ago that it was going to be difficult to select Ty. This decision was relayed to Ty at the time and he was formally advised last Thursday that he would not be selected by Carlton in the Pre-season Draft. This matter was not discussed with Graham Smorgon, nor was he involved in any way,” Denis said.

“I have a very cordial relationship with Graham and will continue to work with the Board in the best interests of the Carlton Football Club as I have always done. We have a very exciting young playing list and we look forward to working together to build a successful team for all Carlton supporters,” added Denis.
