Defence an issue

Have yet to see any match time at all from the first 2 eagles games this season. I live in hope for the coming weeks.

Have a look at the ladder and it will become clear that only one side has kicked more points (ie points for total) than we have in the first 2 games and that is Brisbane.

That is a fantastic improvement on last year, but we are also letting in a lot at the other end of the ground - with a very high tally of points kicked against us so far.

That suggests our defence is a problem and needs some attention. I for one would like to see Gaspar get a game, and perhaps Adam Hunter trialled down in the back half as well, on a half back flank?

The small back pocket position also looks like a difficult problem that is yet to be fixed.

I have not seen either of the games, but your comments suggest that in both games we let in a number of easy goals through a combination of positional errors and skills errors. The question is....do we have the necessary players to fill these gaps and improve the defensive play?

I think we have the players and the coach to turn our defence around. Carltons defence was the best in the league the last two seasons thanks to Whoosha. No doubt given time he will turn around our defence also. What we need is small defenders and what we dont have is small defenders. I think that is the problem.

Last week against Fremantle it was Medhurst and McManus that hurt us on the scoreboard. Freo's talls like Corad and Longmuir were well held. Again against Collingwood theres talls like Cummings and Tarrant were well held while the smaller forwards, Holland obviously, hurt us with 8 goals.

It is a clear problem and im sure Whoosha knows about it and is taking steps to stop it.
