Interesting poll. I think you have to wait a couple of years before you can make a reasonable judgment and you probably could have chosen 2 better players to compare, considering Deledio has been in the AFL twice as long.

Deledio by far the more powerful, explosive player. He will outrun, outmark and outbody a lot of his opponents in the future, not to mention he is a beautiful kick. Gibbs to me has more polish and everything he does is just pure silk. He is 100% footballer and will outsmart, outweave and just outposition most he plays against. They are both very versatile though, I don't think there's really a case to say one is more versatile than the other.

If you had to choose right now I would say Deledio is the safer bet. Has all the physical tools, can play anywhere and has a very nice kick. That said I think if Gibbs continues to develop in the way he did in '08 he will be a better player. He has that poise and that class that only very special players have and he will be a treat to watch for spectators for many years.

deledio will be the best player in the afl in two or three years.

gibbs wont be too far behind.

Gibbs V Deledio in their most recent game.

So... is that Deledio in the red there?
richmond wore their heritage jumper for their centenary match against us
the jumper was very similiar to that of hawthorns
so if that is why you can't spot deledio maybe you should do your research first
gibbs shows class there, far more class than deledio has shown

By being closer to the ball at the time it hits the ground? Please.

It's bad enough having to deal with stupid opposition supporters, and you go posting stuff like this?

Gibbs & Deledio are quite different as players so it's hard to say who you'd prefer... very subjective and depends on what your team needs. Better comparisons would be Gibbs vs Cotchin and Murphy vs Deledio IMO. Gibbs & Cotchin have more finesse than the other two, both are just very natural footballers, capable of doing those breath-taking acts of subtle brilliance where you can only watch and admire. Murphy and Deledio aren't so similar but they are more about power and less about nous... they will run hard to get the ball and they will run hard at the ball. Whether it is bursting through a tackle or burning off a tackler, their acts of brilliance are simpler.

:thumbsu: I like this post.

Deledio is the kind of player I think Collingwood would need; explosive speed which allows him to break the lines, the ability to win his own ball, he has excellent skills and the capacity to kick a bag of goals. I would take him in a heartbeat and I honestly think he will come close to getting the Brownlow next year.

Gibbs will be a gun as well, but Deledio is simply further advanced at the moment, which is hardly surprisng given he's almost 2 years older. There's a lot to like about both players though, I would love to have either at Collingwood.

Bet you anything that final frame was taken from a different play.

lol. It wasn't actually. Recommend everyone to watch the last 1/4 of that game. Gibbs made a complete monkey out of Deledio in several of those contests. It was a little embarrassing. In that passage he just walked under a Deledio tackle and snapped a nice game sealing goal on the left. Gibbs reads the play much better and thinks about 5 steps ahead and toys with his opponents in congestion. Evading Deledio was a pretty simple task. Deledio's strength is uncontested receiving in space and running fast over 100m. His weaknesses are poor footy smarts, average inside skills, and suspect disposal by foot. That's why he'll never be elite. Always around the B to B+ level. He just doesn't have the natural talent to do what Gibbs does but then again not many do. :)

Wasnt Gibbs moved off Deledio after he tore him to shreds in just a quarter of football? :thumbsu:

At the moment I would take Deledio over Gibbs simply because he is more advanced and a better all-round footballer at the moment. Could change in a couple of years if Gibbs lives up to his potential.

Right now? Deledio just...
3 weeks into next season? Gibbs

No shame to Deledio at all. It's just I'm confident Gibbs will be the best midfielder in the league in a couple of years, so by default that'll mean Gibbs > Deledio.

It was an amazing bit of play by Gibbs. His evasive skills are just freakish, and he made Deledio look a little silly. He did a similar trick on 3 Freo defenders at TD, and set up a nice goal for Stevens (watch). He just reads the play brilliantly, and knows how to wrong-foot an opponent, and get them off-balance. It's amazing to watch. Pure talent. :)

i'm sorry, but your arguments are simply embarassing.
you are reffering to one quarter of footy and one incident where gibbs beat deledio to the ball and kicked a goal. your making your judgement of who is better on that? please
if we were all to do that we could just go back to the 1st quarter of that game where gibbs got carved up or better yet, why dont we just refer back to when he shat himself when milne came at him or tripped over in the goalsquare and was unable to kick the simplest of goals?
see you cant do that.

average inside skills? SUSPECT disposal by foot?? please
that isnt even worth responding to...

gibbs having more finesse than deledio?
i dont agree with that. deledio is as classy as they come and dont put him in a group with mark murphy thats insulting

I watched it. Is that honestly the best you could find of him?

Deledio was flat footed, quite easy to break through a tackle when you're going through with pace, and he was about 15 metres out from goal.

Gibbs is a good player, I'm honestly laughing that this play is even being talked about in regards to talking him up.
