I forgot to add in that one of the funniest sights at the game yesterday had to be the two Hawthorn players who flew against Tippett.
Tippett took the mark, and remained standing but the two Hawthorn players who collided with him ended up flat on the deck with Tippett standing tall over the pair of them. Poor buggers, as colliding with Kurt would have to hurt.

The crows being in town brought up an interesting cross section of lovely ladies, grannies with knitted accesories (where are their hubbies?) and bedford industries workers. 6030 was not a bed showing against box hill

Could someone quote a riteup or something after this post. So I dont have to go looking through the entire thing tommorrow when I get home
Thanks in advance.
Me and a couple of the boys made the trek to Berri yesterday and had a fantastic time up by the river. Not a lot I can add to this already impressive thread, but here are a few of my thoughts.
Cook - Fantastic effort. Plays inside and outside and generally used the footy well. A few damaging runs down the wing were tasty and seemed to get his hands on the ball consistently at the stoppages. Will play a minimum 10 games this year, possibly many more. One question, Galman is #34 yeah? What number is Cook then, cos he was wearing Benny Hart’s old number. Confused.
Sloane - Looked lost against the All-Stars, showed big improvement against Geelong and really impressed me today. If you think the Victorian commentators struggled differentiating VB, Vince and McKay, it’s going to take YEARS for them to tell him apart from Cook. Loves the tough stuff and is not afraid to pit his smaller frame against bigger bodies. His enthusiasm to play AFL football is evident and is voice around the stoppages was noticeable.
Walker– There's not a lot to say that hasn't already been mentioned. Has SO much time, excellent bellow his knees and his ability to judge the ball and position himself for a mark is sublime. His 55 metre set shot was ridiculous. Has a Carey-like swagger that I can’t help but get excited about. I’m pumped about the prospect of actually having a potent forward line this year. Tippet, Taylor, Hentschell and Porps are going to provide us with a lot more quality avenue to goal.
Armstrong – Wasn’t dominant, but no one has really mentioned him. He looked comfortable and did some very clever things. He should really play seniors for North all year. Am excited about his potential and could really develop into a quality footballer.
Tippett – Set shot looks a lot more controlled. Again, his ability to contest the mark, then go and hunt it at ground level is a strength of his and this was highlighted when he dished out a superb handball to Walker, who snapped truly. Would love to see 40+ goals out of him this year.
Jacky – Does not have that scared school boy look anymore and is more of a physically impressive specimen than last year. Threatened to crack the game open a few time in the first quarter with some evasive footwork around goal, but couldn’t generate anything worthwhile after fumbling. Didn’t seem to feature after that. With the total lack of small crumming forwards drafted this year, Craig obviously has him ear marked for this role, but expected more from Jacky to be honest.
Sellar – Played full back and I was more than impressed with the big fella. Ran off his opponent and seemed to make good decisions. After a busy first 3 mins, I assigned myself to ‘Sellar Watch’ and counted his possessions. Had 9 in the first half and while beer runs got in the way at times, I think he finished with 16. From memory, he was only beaten on the lead once when a perfect kick laced out his opponent. After all but giving up on the big fella after underwhelming performances so far, I saw some encouraging things today.
Dangerfield – Not sure if he deserves to be ridiculed after his performance as he wasn’t that bad. I kept an eye on him and he got some quality clearance work with handball to runners and blocked out well. The one thing that concerned me was this. If I had never heard of Paddy before, I would have thought he was a big bodied on-baller in the Jordan Lewis mould who is a clearance specialist. The thought that he is a speedy ball carrier would not even have crossed my mind as he did not display this once. I’m sure this will come with time, but I can understand completely if his name does not appear on the team sheet come round 1.
Otten – Looked real good. I have upgraded him from a poor mans Andrew Embley to a poor man with a K-Rudd $900 cash injection. Carried the ball well and has a presence in the engine room. Didn’t look overly quick however. Craigy would love his versatility as he can play in the guts, up forward or even hold down a 3rd tall defensive spot. Definite chance to play round 1.
Some of the ball movement by the Crows was, at times, breath taking, with a long chain of handballs frequently carving up the Hawthorn zone and resulting in goals. If we can get this sort of structure and game plan going in the regular season against people who actually play in the same league as us, we are going to be pleasantly surprised. If not, the normally negative old lady who sits near me at the game is going to be unbearable and I may have to take matters into my own hands.
After nearly not going go due to the lack of Hawthorn interest in the game, but glad I did. One of the most enjoyable and relaxing day trips I've had in quite some time. Having a kick for almost 2 hours after the game on a nicely manicured Berri oval would have been worth it alone. Good times.
lousy isn't the appropriate word....
most clubs lack depth in tall defenders so we can expect that either Walker Tippett or Hentchel will welcome a match up with most clubs 3rd tall defender
Yeah the hype around these guys may be right if the conditions are perfect, yet how often are conditions ideal?? As soon as it rains or gets a little dewy (as it seems to be every night game at AAMI) our three tall forwards (the holy trinity as some are purporting) will become less effective. I know its the same for every team, but i just wonder if we will have the firepower at ground level if our taller players are struggling. Maybe Jacky / Porps / Thompson is the answer. Just pondering out loud.
Also great posts of game synopsis and photos everyone.
