Delistings

There has been very little discussion about Seaby in the papers, perhaps this is a result of being based in Sydney, but given the demand for guys like Mitch Clark, Kurt Tippett, Ivan Maric, Jon Griffin, Zac Clarke and Hamish McIntosh I do find it a little surprising that no one has looked at Seaby yet.

It could be that Seaby has a big contract, part of the package that lured him over to Sydney, that no other club is willing to satisfy.

Don't buy in to stupid, uninformed public opinion on Seaby being a spud. Most who say he is have simply never bothered to watch him play.

He is an above average AFL ruckman. I'm not even saying this to try and convince myself that we will get a good deal for him. I know we probably won't but I really hope he gets to another club who needs a strong number one ruckman, because it is a role he can definitely play to a good standard. His time in Sydney filling in for Mumford (or even as number one over Mummy last year) he has shown he is a very capable AFL ruckman.

Here Here! It is remarkable that people overlook his abilities. 3 Brownlow votes against Richmond and another game where he had similar stats out of the tiny handful of games he was allowed to play! Not given a decent try out as the ruck/forward option even when Jesse was not playing in the 1s. Used as a sub in the first game this year. This guy has not been handled well given his record (his forward record at WC was good). I would not be upset if we kept him as long as he is used properly.

Oh, and by the way, he is an accurate kick at goal.

Seaby is a better option as a number one ruckman (when Mumford is unable to play) but Pyke is a better option as a number two ruckman. Pretty simple as far as I see it.

Seaby is surplus to requirements though as we can't keep him on the list and pay him on the off chance we need to use him if and when Mumford gets suspended or is injured.

Do you think Seaby offers more than Pyke?

Based on watching them play together for the first month or so of the season in the reserves, there isn't much to pick between them. Pyke is probably a marginally better centre bounce ruckman in that he directs a few more to advantage. I suspect Seaby has more nous at around the ground stoppages where the body work is different.

Pyke is quicker, more agile and probably a better contested mark. But he still doesn't understand the game as well as Seaby, despite his improvement. When he finds himself in the right spot he can compete well but won't get himself to the right spots as often.

The biggest difference is the possible upside in Pyke. It is hard to know how much of this will be realised, but the rate of Pyke's improvement has surprised many. He missed so much of this year through injury that it is hard to know whether his improvement curve has flattened out.

Pretty much hit the nail on the head there, imo....

IN FOR 2012
Tony Armstrong (trade - Adelaide)
Mitch Morton (trade - Richmond)
Tommy Walsh (trade - St Kilda)
Nathan Gordon (rookie list elevation)
Tom Mitchell (Father-son nomination; Swans will use pick 21 in November draft)
Picks 43 and 61 in November draft

OUT
Craig Bolton (retired)
Daniel Bradshaw (retired)
Tadhg Kennelly (retired)
Lewis Johnston (trade - Adelaide)
Paul Bevan (delisted)
Campbell Heath (delisted but invited to pre-season training)
Dan Currie (delisted)
Byron Sumner (delisted)

Chris McKaigue (delisted rookie)
Ben Haren (delisted rookie)
Max Otten (delisted rookie)

Big surprise seeing Currie delisted, thought he had been told by the club he was seen as having a future there, especially with Seaby failing medical, would have thought he'd get another year.

Whilst I'm upset to see all four of those guys go, I feel it's the right decision. All four of them have players of their position in the line up who are well ahead of them in the pecking order so I couldn't see any of them cracking into the 22 and establishing a definite place. Would like to see Heath rookied.

Agreed.

At the very least, if they had Currie earmarked as a delisting, why would they have not made an attempt to trade him, at least as part of another deal ... I don't fully understand these things but it seems other clubs, particularly Hawthorn and Collingwood, have kept an eye on Currie over the past coupla years ... anyway, all the best to them; in particular, paul Bevan. A very brave, tough Swan.

Moore's contracted for next year.

Interestingly, the Swans will get rid of eight on the senior list and pick up seven going on the basis that we'll only use 43 and 61. I'm really curious to see whether we'll fill up the 40th spot by going into the PSD.

Probably the right decision, but sad to see Bevo leave. Premiership player, and as Longmire said, just an absolute hard nut. If GWS pick him up, does that count as their one uncontracted player from us? If so it probably means he won't get picked up, which is sad.

Nah delisted players don't count as uncontracted so I think he'll end up at GWS.

Didn't think Currie would be delisted considering it'll probably be Seabys last season at the club next year.

Should we expect another thread by Uncle Ray telling us how we didn't give Sumner a fair go!:D

Not if they pick him up in the draft. Happy for them to take him.

One of McNeill or Gordon is going to be upgraded.

I would suggest it's also possible in a weak draft that Heath may also be drafted back into the pack or put into the rookie category ala Thornton a couple of years back.

Perhaps Currie was the one with the rumoured injury in Thailand? Seems a little odd

No as once the player is delisted by a club he is no longer considered an uncontracted player.

The AFL yesterday clarified that compensation only applied if a player quit the club and delisted himself and was taken by GWS. Players delisted by clubs are regarded as unwanted players and so the club is undeserving of compensation.
