Of those leaving us, the premiership 22 had H&A help/ input/ freshness from O'B (in 6 games), Locks (in 11), Josh (in 9), Medders (11). Can we cover that loss?

Shea Mac might say 'yes we can' - and he could be right?

Yep.

Thomas is OB. Wood/Shae can cover what Fraser covered. Krakouer will probably push someone out of the 22, so whoever that is can cover Lockyer and Rounds can cover the Medhurst depth.

We still have reasonable depth, just not the big names.

Anthony, Goldsack, Wood, Blair, Davis, McCarthy, Dick are all outside the 22 for round 1 next year (IMO), we are fine.

Add Rounds who should be pushing for selection, Buckley as well...

I think depth wise we are once again the envy of the comp, as we have some genuine quality outside out best 22

Depth outside best 22 who could legitimately play games next year

Wood, Keefe, Rounds, Blair, McCarthy, Davis, Prestigiacomo, Anthony, Goldsack, Dick, Young, J. Thomas, Buckley, Ceglar

i think the question can we have an injury free year like we did last year? Our midfield doesn't have much depth.. very hard to cover for a swan or pendlebury i just hope we can remain injury free again.... if we do look out!

COLLINGWOOD

Sean Rusling (retired)
Shane O'Bree (retired)
Jaxson Barham (delisted)
Jarrad Blight (delisted)
Ryan Cook (delisted)
Anthony Corrie (delisted)
Jack Carter (delisted)
Tristan Francis (delisted)
Paul Medhurst (retired)
Tarkyn Lockyer (retired)
Josh Fraser (Gold Coast)

On that list only the bolded would have been considered "good enough" to be in our best 22. Rusling would have but he hasn't played in years.

The rest are simply just "cloggers" with respect to them. They are not part of our "depth".

However, we've replaced Lockyer and Medhurst with Krakouer and Tarrant, therefore we haven't lost anything there, rather we've become stronger. We also did not lose anyone, particularly Anthony. Cloke will also stay so don't sweat it.

Our depth is still well and truly very strong.

Losses to be fair look only at who was serious selections after rd 14
Lockyer, Fraser, Medhurst

ins

Tarrant, Krakeour and young kids coming on through will have imporoved ala Rounds. I dare say our depth has actually improved and we havent made the draft yet whos knows if we will pick up another ready to go only Hine will tell, I mean time will tell

Let's face it...the names in our depth were good....however none were good enough to get a game by the end.

The only depth players on our list that were good enough were Goldsack and Presti...and eventually Goldsack pushed aside Davis.

O'Bree was finished early...Lockyer barely played in the 2nd half....Medhurst's body was shot...Fraser hasn't been up to it for years.

So we are not losing a lot.

We pretty much have to find 2 spots on the list for Tarrant and Krakouer...because both are too good to sit in the VFL. Leon Davis will look to have a big pre-season.

I think our depth is actually better.

Interesting that Collingwood are right "on top" of this, and Geoff Walsh mentioned as much during the Tarrant presser today.

We have lost so much experienced depth/fringe players, especially for a club coming off a premiership, that we had to find a way to replace some of that experience, and the answer so far is Tarrant and Krakouer.

Wood is a ready made cover for Fraser, and the likes of Dick, J.Thomas, Rounds, Blair, McCarthy and Krak cover for the loss of Meds, Lockyer and O'Bree to an extent.

The rest (Barham, Cook, Corrie, Rusling) were "fillers" on our list anyone, who were never going to play a significant role in a finals team, so they can easily be replaced, even by long term youth prospects.

But still, don't be surprised if we go after an experienced or mature aged player that no one has heard of, most likely as a rookie.

We have 5 draft picks as it stands (up to pick 78) but we could always use the picks after that to promote our rookies.

I'm glad we have the list management team we have at Collingwood, because our "conundrum" post flag wasn't "typical" of a premiership list.

We will be all right though, and once again we will have 31-33 genuine senior players on our list, and at first glance, it may even be stronger and more versatile then 2010.

Absolutely agree Dave, especially on the Krakouer/Davis camparo.
Krakouer is a ready made replacement for Leon down the track.

The players that we have lost that were genuine depth players i.e. competing for a place in the 22 come the end of the year were: Medhurst, Fraser & Lockyer. Coming onto our list is Krakour and Tarrant.

The ruckman will all step up a spot in our succession plan - Wood into Frasers spot, Shae Mac into Wood's and Ceglar into the rookie spot. I really like what we have done their and sets us up for the future in terms of ruckmen.

The advantage of having Krak & Taz in over Medhurst & Lockyer is flexibility. Krak can play midfield & forward as well as add a large amount of pace. Taz can play back & forward which makes him a great depth player (the Freo people hate us calling him a depth player, but thats what he is essentially).

Overall I think our depth has improved and hopefully that gets better when Hine has a crack at the drafts, particularly some mature age rookies - Myles Sewell anyone?

I really couldn't think of too many areas in our starting 22 that needed instant improvement other than small forwards. Remember Brad Dick will fill this need hopefully and Krak will step in at some stage as well so I am as happy as I have ever been with our list structure, management & future.

I reckon if we had 6-10 injuries/suspensions Fraser, medders, O’Bree and Lockyer would’ve played a lot more. We were lucky we had minimal injuries all year, the least out of the 16 teams. I’ll be surprise if we have another run like that next year, and if we do, the medicos and fitness people should get a massive pay rise if not already.

key observation that :thumbsu:

depth is a concern for all clubs and due to this made our depth look even better by comparison

You could almost argue our depth is better next year than it was this year.

I think it certainly is. We have lossed 3 players who where just outside the 22 and picked up 2 players who will now be inside the 22, pushing players that were inside it back out.

On top of that hopefully McCarthy and Dick (or at least one of) can be fit for the year. Hopefully Buckley with a pre-season and no distractions can push for selection (he did in the second half of last year) Anthony will hopefully have a full pre-season.

We may need our depth more because it's hard to having a run that good with injuries again but we certainly have better depth this year IMO and the way we man managed throughout this season was perfect and I have no doubt we will do the same again.

Ahhh, surely you jest. As Mark Fine observed correctly this year, we have essentially a double midfield rotation, in advance of any of our rivals.

Pendlebury, Swan, Ball, Wellingham, D Thomas, Blair as genuine mids with Didak, Sidebottom and Beams spending time through there. Leon very capable also. Added now is Krakouer with players like McCarthy, J Thomas and Sinclair rounding out the depth options.

Of course no-one wants to lose those types of players to injury, like any club, but the effect would be nowhere near as bad for us as another club losing two of their best.

Yeah I know, but it's Ceglar, so anything's possible.

Correct.

Effectively we have midfield depth built into the starting 21. It's a huge advantage to have forward options who can run through the midfield particularly with one bench spot being ripped from us by Vlad. It was designed to combat our gamestyle and high rotation policy, but for me it plays into our hands. It will suit teams who have multiple players who can play in a variety of roles, particularly the midfield. It will also suit teams with a second ruck that can play forward or back, both of which suits us completely.

We have so many players than can play in the middle, but also up forward either while resting or by default: Swan, Krakouer, Beams, Sidebottom, Maccaffer, Davis, etc to go with our primary on ball brigade: Swan, Pendles, Ball, Wellingham, etc etc.

Good times ahead.

Starting Team-
Shaw Brown Maxwell
O'brien Reid Johnson
Daisy Pendles Krakouer
Beams Cloke Didak
Sidebottom Dawes Macaffer
Jolly Swan Ball
Int: L. Brown, Tarrant, Wellingham
Sub: Toovey

Depth remaining:-
Wood, Keefe, Rounds, Blair, McCarthy, Davis, Prestigiacomo, Goldsack, Dick, Young, J. Thomas, Buckley, Sinclair

Three or four of those "depth" players could be regulars in next years side though.

Still plenty of depth without Anthony :)

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Basically from outside last years premiership 22 we have:

Davis, Presti, Taz, Krakeour & Dick who we know can play at AFL level.

Then we have McCarthy, Buckley, Wood (perhaps could go in the above group) who have played AFL and could be the next guys in line.

Then there is the untried guys who'll be coming off a full pre-season and not injured like Rounds, Sinclair & J.Thomas.

Midfield depth would be covered by playing Beams, Sidey, Leon, Krak more midfield time the forward.

Depth is certainly not an issue.

Just because you've played a lot of senior games in the past does not make you good depth. Playing any of those that have moved on would have been a step in the wrong direction.

Topping up with players like Krakeour and Tarrant who can actually offer something to the group has been a great move, and I expect Dick and McCarthy to really step up in 2011 also.
