For the past couple of years the local pundits have been rabbiting on how Australia has enough depth in cricket to field two competitive sides.

Last nights performance proved how ridiculous this belief was. A team that can't get to 50 overs or even break 150 runs is a pretty ordinary team in my opinion.

The batting looked fragile and a team with Paul Wilson as a strike bowler.......well!!!

The only player out there that didn't look out of his depth was Damien Fleming.

Pretty ordinary I thought!

my 2 cents

I think the depth theory is more applicable to the test team. When you consider the names in the one-day first side that would be left out of a test side (Bevan, Lehmann, Symonds, Martyn) - they would all be pushed into a Test 2nd XI, making it pretty strong.
Add players to a test 2nd XI that are probably better 4-day players than one-day players and the two sides might look like this:

Firsts -
Slater
Hayden
Langer
M.Waugh
S.Waugh
Ponting
Gilchrist
Warne
B.Lee
Gillespie
McGrath

Seconds-
Elliott
Blewett
Bevan
Lehmann
Katich
Symonds/Martyn
Haddin/Seccombe
Bichel
Kasprowicz
Miller
MacGill

That second side would get thrashed by South Africa, be competitive against Pakistan and India, and flog the rest.

What loon picked the batting order?
Blewett bats 3 for S.A so he should open,
Slater opens for Australia so mhe was an obvious choice for no4
Katich bats 4/5 for W.A so he's an obvious 3
as well as captain & the most inexperienced player in the team as well.

Okay there is always going to be trouble when u pick blokes for your second 11 who have just come from playing test cricket and who would of been dissapointed in not making the carlton series squad
this would have been my second 11

Maher
Hayden
Hodge
Katich
Love
D.Marsh
Haddin
B.Oliver
Kasper
Fleming
Dale

now i know i have picked alot of qlders but maher and hayden have been the best performed one day domestic openers for the last three years.Hodge picks himself, As does Katich, M.Love has been in outstanding form and deserves every chance. D.Marsh is an outstanding one day batsmen and bowls effective spin, Haddin is not in the same class as Seccombe all gilchrist, but his batting gets him over the line in the one day form of the game, B.Oliver is an outstanding talent withball and bat and should have been given a chance to be fast traced aka higgs and brakcen,
Kasper is just class we all know that, Fleming is all class as well and dale is one of thebest one day bowlers in australia
Now i think that is a much better balanced australia A side
