Ok so its a little delayed but here goes...
For me playing a bet on what ever horse damien oliver rode for the melbourne cup was an obvious winner.
It was almost as if he were destined to win as if a greater power had it planned from the death of his brother.
Does anyone else believe there is a such a thing as destiny and that all things happen for a reason?

Nah, plenty of people have lost in that situation, it's seen as some kind of intervention by a higher power or destiny because he won.

He won because he is a bloody good rider on a damned good horse.

i dont think any1 else would of one on that day - i do believe in fate and desitny

you a right though docker - as one of the commentators for 7 said a less of a jokey couldn't ride under these circumstances

it will be one of those 'where were you when you saw...' moments

Exactly! It's just a bunch of stuff that happened!

What he said.

No such thing as fate or destiny. You create your own. Is it destiny that Mocca is an accountant, or did he actually study, get a good score, go through uni, and then get jobs in the accounting industry? He chose to study. He chose the course. He wouldn't have got where he is if he didn't.

I think fate and destiny is a cop out. It discredits hard work.

I'll also add, that if things like Oliver's win are destiny, why didn't St. Kilda win the flag in '97 after Winmar's father passed away?

Your career does not have to have anything to do with destiny.
Destiny could have been that Mocca was destined to meet his current wife, some higher power orgranised/caused for them to meet at the right time and place etc.
Hitman your missing the point of fate and destiny careers are not the be all and end all nor are they tyhe highlights of ones life

Because St Kilda have a bigger destiny than the death of one man can influence.

Obviously you are missing the point. Melbourne Cup victories are not the be all and end all of life either. Mr. Oliver agrees: "Melbourne Cups don't mean anything to me anymore..."

I have a feeling yesterday won't go down as one of Oliver's highlights in life. It'll just go down in the recordbooks.

Winning the melbourne cup will be probally the biggest thing in Damien olivers life (marriage and child birth aside), its a great a achievment.
Its still too soon after the Death of his brother but looking back when he thinks he did it for his brother he will more than appreiciate it.

excactly - his bothers funeral is today and that is all that he sees right now

its not about highlights or lowlights - its about finding out why things happen when theyn do

So let me get this right. Getting a score in the 90's, going through a uni course, and getting a good job has nothing to do with destiny. But the Melbourne Cup does. Oh, but AFL Grand Final's don't.

Yup, because sporting events are the only things that matter to the people who have passed on.

I'm convinced.

You know why Damien Oliver rode a winner yesterday?

Because Dermott Weld is a horse training genius.

Because Media Puzzle was hard fit, a true stayer, mature enough to win a two mile event and favoured by the track condition.

Because he drew a good gate close to the rails and Oliver was able to position him to advantage, make an unimpeded run and set up a break at a crucial stage.

Because every other main fancy in the race - in hindsight - had things against them: other Europeans - not suited on hard track; Distinctly Secret - didn't quite stay; Pentastic - needed a softer track; Miss Meliss - outclassed; Rain Gauge - needs a spell.

Because Oliver was the best jockey in the race, Weld the best trainer, and Media Puzzle the best weighted horse in the race.

These are the reasons Media Puzzle won.

It had nothing to do with Jason Oliver's death last week. Nothing.

Hitman you look at things too simply, your one of those guys that thinks there has to be an explanation for everything arnt you?
Melbourne cup and Grand Finals similar things, few people achieve them and those that do seem to have always known they would.
Geting a score in your 90's is a dime a dozen then again some people have always known they were going to be doctors as they have that touch.
You see what I am getting at, there are things that were just meant to be for reasons unknown.
I believe the sooner you accept these things and believe there for the good the better life turns out to be

agree sabre its bl00dy hard getting a score even in the 80s let alone 90s i reckon.

I got fairly good grades in high school by some sorta fluke probably but was always getting B's or in terms of percentage i would always get at least 70%. When it came to that bl00dy enter score tho i did sh1t and only got 49 when i had expected to get at least 75.

Yup. I guess it's the journalist in me, it's my destiny ya know...

Seriously, why complicate things for the sake of it when there's a logical explanation like Mocca just gave?
