So the cap isn't level 20 then?

It is level 20.

How it will work is you level to 20 through exp. Once there the gear you will be hunting has "light" on it. This stat will increase your level so for example 9 light will = another char level. You will need to raid and find gear in order to inflate your char level to take on the harder enemies which will be well above level 20

Will have to see how it's implemented but on first glance I'm not sure I like it. Would prefer a classical levelling system rather than having to grind endlessly, hoping for a certain item to drop.

But imagine if you score a super rare weapon... It would be some great "Look at me" time ...lol

I think it will all come down to how its implemented. MMO players would be expecting a deep gearing system to enable them to take down bosses and be able to compete in high level "PvP" (think wow) whilst FPS players especially console ones will be thinking that if they are good enough they should be able to beat content regardless of gear and will want a level playing field in the multiplayer.

Bringing those two groups into the middle will be the challenge. Im a fan of FPS but also a bit fan of the whole once you hit max level you optimise your char which you with say WoW or Diablo, so this system appeals. However if it is implemented poorly or too far towards one group it could really turn people away.

Basically they need to get the carrot on the stick gameplay that MMO/RPG gamers really crave whilst also giving FPS/action players that instant gratification without too much of a grind.

The last game that tried to flirt between two different types of games was ESO (MMO and the signle player series) and that failed horribly.

I would be more excited on levelling up through weapons them just player levelling... I want to see players have unique weapons which influence their power much much more then player level

I agree with much of what you've said, but I actually think I fit into a third category. I'm not a big MMO player and I don't have any huge fascination with FPS games (in fact I tend to avoid them unless they make a point of doing something different or actually engaging in some kind of storytelling), so Destiny is a bit of a weird game for me to actually be enjoying. What I liked from it was that there were enough cool features and tweaks upon levelling that it never felt bland and you felt like you were getting constant rewards. I'm not interested in spending hours grinding just to have a slight chance of getting a cool drop; luck is never on my side and I don't get the sense of satisfaction that some get when they find a rare drop, so this system really doesn't appeal to me.

I have no issue with them appeasing the MMO masses by bringing in rare drops that make them do more damage, etc - in fact, I love it and encourage the sort of 'no player is the same' customisation in the game. But by the sound of this 'soft cap' business, it sounds like you're going to need to get these sorts of drops in order to continue the game. If that is the case I'll stop playing once I hit 20, because I just have no interest in beating the shit out of the same enemy for hours on end. For mine it's tedious. Level grinding can be a bitch as well but at least you know for certain you're getting something out of it (and the better games ensure there is minimal grinding anyway).

Overall I agree and think it all comes down to the implementation, but the 'soft cap' system is a pretty dangerous thing to toy with and can end up alienating a lot of the fan base in my view.

My understanding was that there would be daily challenges, and I would expect new bosses put in frequently. I doubt we will have play the same boss challenge for weeks after weeks...wait a see I guess

I'm talking about getting drops. From what I know of games that implement these sorts of things, most of the time with rare drops they only come from certain enemies in certain conditions/areas. There's a lot of grinding involved if you want to get the items you're looking for (unless you're super lucky).

I'm expecting too much from this type of game I guess. 20 seems a small number but I play RPGs and this is not an RPG. Consider it a reflex reaction.

I might have to take to stuffing everything into the vault and starting anew when I hit the caps if I want longevity. That's my own problem.

Yeah agreed it is just a waiting game to see how it all works out. Hopefully it is for the best.

Im very hopeful that this is a success, not because of any loyalty to bungie, but because Activision have backed this to the absolute Hilt. Pumping a ridiculous amount of time and money into this new IP. If this can succeed i believe it will show other developers/producers/companies that it is ok to try and build new IP, we dont need to keep recycling the same old games and stories every year to make a profit. We dont need a new installment of the same franchise every year. Branch out, take a risk, show us something new because if you do? The consumers will pay for it.

Thats why i hope this succeeds, to try and bring an end to this rut that the gaming industry is in danger of falling into. Its something the Film industry struggles with and that is new ideas.

Nah i totally understand where your coming from.

Problem is i dont see it being able to have those really deep strong RPG systems that some like, at least not at first. Because they need to appeal to the FPS crowd. We will see, hopefully gear progression is done ina way that leveling progression isnt missed too much.

It's definitely more an FPS than anything else in terms of gameplay. I've definitely played those before (as some earlier posts have mentioned) and my thirst for the bloodthirst and destruction factor is strong. So to that end as long as there's a goal in sight I'll enjoy the game from beginning to end.

The co-op is what I might need to keep my excitement. There's so much fun in tackling that Strike mission and letting the team-mates do most of the work while I try and fail to pick off the weaklings before they two-shot me.

Ok...yeah I haven't played games like this before...guess im going in with my eyes open. Im pretty optimistic though

http://t.joystiq.com/all/2014-08-02-destiny-endgame-raids-will-have-six-players-no-matchmaking

The end game content "raids" will be 6 players only, with no matchmaking so you'll have to either find 5 friends to play at the same time or don't play it at all.

http://m.neogaf.com/showthread.php?t=862762

There will also only be one area per planet and I believe there's 5(?) planets.

Based on the BETA and this information it's a no buy from me. When it was first announced they made it out like it was this big MMO that was like Halo mixed with Borderlands. It's definitely not an MMO.
