The more I see of Lids the more I think he will make a name for himself as a key med forward in the Brad johnson ilk. With his strong hands, turn of speed and beautiful kick he will be a far greater asset to the side than down back. Forget the midfield for a while, he's never done anything in there to get me excited and there are plenty of others cueing up for a spot there..:thumbsu: Leave him in F50 and he will be a consistent 50+ goal a year forward

Totally agree there.
Would be nice to have 2 of him then he could rely on some quality delivery as well

I think he will predominately play midfield, but will definitely have spells in the forward line. Cousins does this also, but Deledio has the advantage of a taller frame at 189 cm.

And his speed also helps him alot. Clement had no hope on him last night once he made a good lead.

Not sure who the plenty of others are Bo, but we desparately need another 2 or 3 elite midfielders. Foley is one, Hopefully Edwards and Connors will be a couple more. I'm still pretty comfortable that Tambling will grow into the role as well. But Deledio is the ace in the pack. He is the one who can play the tall midfielder role and also be thrown up forward to create mismatches, depending on where a matchwinner is needed.

View of an outsider who loves watching deledio: I think that he will serve you best in the midfield because of his pace and long kick he can create 70 metre plays, just like Foley does. Deledio is a classy player and I think he can benefit your side more in the midfield, which is very weak at the moment. Your forward line is okay with richo brown and pettifer so I think Deledio can most benefit you in the midfield

Certainly give him spells up forward but i wouldnt purely develop him as a forward. His best game this year was against Essendon when he ran thru the midfield and broke lines. He is the best young utility in the game so let him into a Michael Voss or Mark Riccuito type player who can pinch hit forward.

One game doesnt make him a gun forward...

However, I'm thinking he's a similar player to Hodge, you can put him just about anywhere and he'll do a pretty good job.

Good to see him do well anyway. Let's hope for Richmond he can keep it up! :)

I think deledio needs to be a midfielder playing pinch hitting roles around the ground. friday night was a good example of how talented and versatile he is but we need that in the centre alot more than we need it up forward with blokes like riewoldt, hughes, schulz and eventually peterson all potential quality and all vying for positions.

Will end up a Ruck Rover who will push forward. Great size and an area of his game that is overlooked is his hardness at the contest, is starting to win more of his own ball which will allow him to really hurt teams.

As the group grows in stature so will Lids, is a real leader of the group coming through.

Good summation Crummers. He's too good overhead for the smaller defenders, too quick for the bigger guys. Classy midfielders and good experienced run-with players can tag him out of a game, but why would you waste a Ling or a Hodge in a back pocket / back flank?

Will be a midfielder who can be sent up forward. Not sure about the thought of using him for drive from half back.

He played a fair bit at CHF at junior level.

My brother has been in recruitment in Northern Vic. for decades and said that Deledio was as good as any and could be more of a James Hird type who can play midfield and key position.

The best case scenario is that he can swing between both rather than pigeon-holing him.

I remember a year or so ago checking Lids height/weight against Hirds thinking with his bulid, leap and strong hands he would be an excellent utility type.
His excellent pace and line busting ability demands he play alot around mid-field though.
How exciting is it going to be to see him fulfill the massive potential we know he has over the next few years. Massive match-up problem for other teams if we can swing him forward when needed.

Lids is needed in the midfield, as ours lacks depth atm. If he can do what he did on friday on a consistant basis we should play him in the midfield first, and then when he gets a tagger put on him he can push up forward and beat them there. I believe Wallace already knows this and will use this tactic in the future.

I am confident that Lids could easily become a Shotgun williams / Brad Johnson full forward provided the forward line is opened up for him.

If we have 10 players leading in different directions and clogging up the 50, there will be no role for Lids in the forward as he is not a "power" forward - what will make him unbeatable will be his speed. But he needs space to lead into for that to apply.

I just hope that Deledio recognises that just as he won a lot of contested ball in the forward line, he can still do the same in the midfield... He had eyes only for the ball on Friday night, it was great.

He will be a great asset wherever we need the asset. Top gun, like this kid is a top ****ing gun. Cant wait to see him unleashed on the comp. When are you going to release the reins TW?
He moves and thinks about the game like a Mcleod or Crawford, but is taller. His balance makes him lethal to the opposition. ;)

Lids is a jet! He is just so skilful and he has a great set of hands for a midfielder. I love the fact that his goal kicking has really improved.
I think as a few before me have said, he is a utility and we can put him anywhere and cause a very hard match up.
For people that watched closely on Friday night, he took a ball out on the wing and kicked across his body into the forward line. That ball travelled 45-50 metres and he only chipped it.
He is a freak and when our senior guys stand up and get the job done, guys like Lids, Tambling, Edwards and Connors can play cameo roles without being tagged.
Coghlan, Foley, Tuck and Jackson/Johnson in the middle will free up Lids, Bling, Edwards, Connors, Howat, King, Raines and Newman to be our runners.
One step forward at a time and probably two back, but if our output can start to match that of the Pies/Dees games we will be ultra competetive next season.

The biggest positive about Deledio is his versatility.

We will be able to use him wherever he can do the most damage to an opponent on the day.

His consistency/output will gradually improve.

Trying to keep a lid on things but a long awaited win plus one of our favorites having a ripper game makes it difficult.
In terms of Deledios ability to keep improving let's remember when he starts season 2008:
Will already be his 4th season (62 games played at end of 2007)
He will still only be 20 years old! (dob 18.04.87)
Gun... :thumbsu:

Lids is a freak! Has a fantastic set of hands. Should be used up forward with stints through the mid field. He has good size, great pace, big leap and can kick a set shot. With his overhead ability could become one of the greats.
