Said it on the game day thread but this feels similar to Hawthorn when they recruited O'Meara and Mitchell. Hawthorn miscalculated where their list was, tried for one final flag and it ended up delaying their rebuild a year or two. Richmond wanted one more flag and they thought Hopper and Taranto would help them deliver it, but it turned out even with those two the premiership window had closed, and by bringing them both in they were not able to invest in the draft in the last 2 years like they could have, which means they have also delayed their rebuild.

Giants are better off without those potatoes

I thought for years that GWS had a lot of downhill skiers in their midfield 5 years ago, players that looked amazing when the game was easy, but went to water when it wasn't. I feel like they have systematically managed to trade away most of those players and it has helped.

Big difference is that Hawthorn were a fair way down the path with Coniglio too.

They thought they’d also be big shot at Lynch.

Then Rough got Cancer and Rioli retired….things went south quick.

Was there a possibility of Hawthorn getting Coniglio, Lynch, Mitchell and O"Meara?
Coniglio was being lined after the other two. He’d told people close to him in WA he was headed to Hawthorn, which is why the WA media commentator, Vlahos, was stating as much.
We had ITK posters on our board saying Cogs was coming until Gil got involved.

Lynch who knows, but not after hawks had a poor 2017.

GWS sold their two least effective mids for some quality ND picks - made off like bandits.

Worse mistake a club can make is to misjudge where their list is at. Best Hawks and Tiges could hope for was a 'dead cat bounce' and both are now paying for that misjudgement.

Richmond has a lot of players 30 and over to shed in the next few off seasons with little coming through and can't see them being an attractive club for players looking to move. Hard times ahead, enjoy them Tim and Jacob.

We actually invested pretty heavily in 2021, taking 5 picks in the top 30 including Gibcus, Brown, Sonsie, Banks and Clarke. So I think a lot of us were reasonably content that we could trade out a few picks to improve the list. The biggest issue is that we have youth but it's all unproven. It's a logical result from contending for a few years and not having much of a youth focus.

We have such a bad strike rate of first rounders I generally don't mind if we trade out. I also think when you trade in for players, it's whose available. So yeah it would have been better if Hopper and Taranto were a couple of years younger but it plugs a few holes with all our retirements.

With all that said, I think it's going to be a rough year ahead.

Wait....were Richmond fans seriously trolling GWS after last year's prelim, saying Tim Taranto would have made the difference??

Pies would have won by 6 goals with all the freebie turnovers Taranto would have given them.....
