Atm we have pick 16 in the first round and now it is confirmed that Palmer is off to GWS and we will definitely get compensation probly in the form of band 2 so hopefully end of first round.

Now I'm not all that keen on chasing Clark I think the price will be too high and dont really think he offer what we need as a KPF more an improved Johnson/Bradley we dont need more of those. I also dont think we have the currency to secure O'meara compared to what will be offered.

They also say that this yrs draft has a pretty good top end but thins out quickly, Sheedy has also noted this. So my idea is to trade our first round pick (16) and the compensation pick that we get for Palmer to GWS my ideal return for this trade would be pick 7 or at worst pick 9 (I wouldnt go lower than this).

In return GWS still keep the same amount of picks in this yrs first round but pick up another pick next yr when the draft should be much stronger for Sheedy to continue to build his list. We in turn get a pick in the top 10 this yr where we can possibly target a better player or snare that KPF that a lot of us have been talking about.

I'm not completely sure if we can make this trade with GWS but would like to hear any thoughts on the idea (+ve or -ve) or if anyone has any better ideas for a trade.

GWS would probably like that since we're giving up 2 1st rounders for 1. It's questionable as to whether we'd gain much from a 7 odd pick placement upgrade if we're eyeing off a hypothetical KPP most likely to go in the teens, we'd be throwing a pick away.

But then maybe in the event we scratch Sheeds' back he'll scratch ours and give us better access to say JOM or something else.

The only way I'd be interested in that is if it gave us a top 2-3 pick (and a shot at Coniglio for example). In short, and history would match this I reckon, you'd be better off with 2 picks in the 15-20 range than 1 pick in the 5-10 range. Just an odds thing ...

... and GWS wouldn't' be interested in that I reckon.

Dont forget the compo pick is alot more valueable than a normal pick.
As we can choose to use it this year in a weak draft or choose to use it in 1 of the next 5 drafts.
Where there could be plenty of talent still left.

Would definitely be keen for a top 3 pick but we wouldnt get it or everyone would be trying to make that trade.

I hope we keep the pick and bank it but thought we might be able to make this trade and get a quality KPF in a compromised draft.

We'd be mad to use the compo pick this year, it's going to be about 7 spots lower in the draft. Either trade it or bank it.

i was thinking about this the other day, and was wondering if indeed we should use it...

Against is the fact its a supposed weak draft

But For is the fact that i dont really expect us to be this high in the draft order (low on the ladder) anytime in the next 3 or so years, so would using it this year actually give us a higher valued pick than in years coming?

At best we'll get a pick at the end of the first round for Rhys so where we finish is irrelevant. Using it this year will be around pick 29-30 due to all the concessions GWS have while it'll be pick 19-21 next year.

Yeah our pick this year (assuming its end of first round) wouldnt be til about 30 which is more like a middle of 2nd round draft pick than a first and it is a weak draft so highly unlikely that we'd use it.

Next yr I'd say that GWS, Port and GC would all go close to getting priority picks plus all the first/ end of first that are out there that havent been used that that will probly get used in next yrs 'superdraft' I'd say that our pick would be around the 25 mark again. The yr after that 2013 we'd probly be more in line with the 20 mark if we hold it that long.

The draft is a lottery, i'd back the recruiters at the 20's to find something decent.

What was Palmer taken at again ?

Anything can happen with early top 10 picks, see Scully

Dude, there is a massive correlation between draft picks and games played. You know which number draft pick averages the most games? #1. Second? #2. You get the idea.

Obviously the strike rate reduces the lower in the draft you go, but you're still more likely to pick up quality with pick #20 than pick #30.

its amazing that right now we can officially say that the year we got a rising star winner was a dud draft. palmer-gone, hinkley-gone, mayne-very underwhelming player...... would never have thought that.... it just shows that whatever we do we need to be careful. i lean towards keeping our compo pick for a year in the future when it will be worth more, its a lottery either way
