Listening to Cam Ling on AW tonight. He really is impressive in a talk situation, really is the most natural off-ground leader at the club. Comfortable and relaxed , I just wish he could go one step further and call the interviewers by name insead of saying "mate" at the end of every sentence.
It seems to be a common thing at the club, when ever players get interviewed post match, the use of "mate" just makes them seem, to me, less proffesional. Do we do media training? Do we have a media officer that could give them a running sheet pre interview?
Just an area I think we still can improve in !

And don't forget the overuse of the bloody "yeah, no".. what the ******** does that mean anyway??!??

Theres a great sketch done on "The Late Show" about 10+ years ago, where Jason Stephens interviews Tim Watson. In the first take he says all the regular cliches, but then Watson takes the 'media course' and learns to say what he really thinks.. really funny! :D

But yeah, alot of the footballers are in serious need of media training, but some (like linga) are ok.

I am pretty aure the AFLPA organise Media Training for all AFL listed players! It doesn't necessarily mean they will be comfortable in front of the camera however.

I have no problem with them using the word mate...are we going to be like Parliament and ban it? The word is deeply entrenched in Australian culture. I don't think it sounds unprofessional at all.

In terms of "yeah, nah", I'll try to explain what I think it means.

When they say "yeah" it is their acknowledgment that they have heard understand the question, and the "nah" bit is the answer to the question. Whilst there is no need to say "yeah" it is slipped into our vocabulary over the years, and again I have no problem with it!

But i hear them say "yeah, nah, we played a good game" for instance. So in that case the 'nah' should be dropped.

'yeah, nah' is completely unnecessary.

And dont get me started on all the cliches..

im going to take it one post at a time..
