I've always wondered if players take supplements - in the form of Creatine etc.

I daresay most players would take stuff like protein shakes to keep them in their best physical condition, but ...

a) Is taking supplements like Creo legal in the first place?
b) If it is, why is there any debate about whether or not a player can bulk up. (I've just heard that supplements like Creatine can add significant 'bulk')

Would anyone know?

I imagine if it works/ is legal they would use it.

Every athlete takes supplements

I'd put my money on them taking whey, creatine, multivitamins, magnesium, fish oil, flax seed oil, bcaas, glutamine etc.

Yep, of course players take supplements...

They take them in the forms of Branched Chain Amino Acids (protein based (similar to) to help muscle build and recovery) and Creatine, which is the main source of energy which our muscles operate and resynthesise ADP into energy producing ATP, for all those p.e buffs out there.

Creatine enables athletes to work at a higher intensity as a result of boosted energy stores. Therefore, as a result of working at higher intensity for longer periods, it enables them to maximise training gains, either through fitness, or through muscle building in the gym.

Of course, this will always cause ethical debate, but the question is can such supplements, ie: creatine, branched chain amino acids, etc, actually help an athelete beyond their physical capablilites?

According to WADA, not at the minute, but thhese supplements will always be under threat of investigation..

However, while they are made legal, players/ atheletes/ coaches will do almost anything either within or outside the ethical and rule abiding boundaries of that given sport.

FF's use colostrum.Builds up for short sharp bursts of speed.

Somethig was done at SCU last year with foxtel on the legal and illegal substances used, and how well they worked etc.It was very interesting.

pretty sure they take creatine, not sure about things like mass gainer or proteine

An article from ABC's Background Briefing, discusses creatine use including amongst AFL clubs.

horrible stuff. i feel sick just thinking about it.
I tried it for about 6 months in my teens. just not worth it. heaps of side effects.

but I thought it was classed as performance enhancing in the late 90s ?

Why does everyone think creatine is some sort of huge un-natural enhancement?

It is natural and found in foods like tuna, salmon and beef. If you were going to ban creatine, you would have to ban these foods too.

Short answer: yes.

Creatine is produced in the body anyway. Any supplement just enhances the supply of it.

Depends on what kinds of creatine y
ou take... Pharmaceutical Grade Micronised Creatine I've yet to come across a side effect, whereas el-cheapo stuff yep.

Just realise creatine is not an artificial substance, it is found in red-meat. Except you have to eat a lot of cow to get a reasonable dose.

So the argument is if you can take an iron tablet legally as oppossed to eating 5kg of spinach, or a Vitamin C tablet as opposed to eating 20 oranges than there is nothing wrong about creatine.

What creatine actually does is enable your muscles to retain water, this is why you need to drink more water whilst on it to give enough water for other body purposes. Keeping your muscles extra hydrated enables you to have the little bit extra... eg doing that extra rep at the gym on an exercise.

Really it doesn't enhance it assists you to get the best physically out of yourself.

Creatine is used for most professional athletes, from triathletes, NFL, Rugby, AFL, Body Builders, tennis players etc etc.

What side effects? And taking it in your teens it too young. I'm 24 and I started taking it 2 months ago, seen some pretty good gains from it.
