In any sport, whether it be simulated or not, the best players in each sport usually play in the best positions on the ground/field/court etc. Is the SFA the exception to this rule however? Obviously the simulated competition means that anyone can play any position at any time, so how do you determine who the "best" players are in this comp? The one metric that gets brought up all the time is posting, and why shouldn't it? The more active the poster, the "better" they are in this competition. We have an entire award based on who the best poster is each season, so this would be the metric that gets used.
In my eyes, there are 7 "premium positions" on a qootball field, the positions that usually garner the highest Dream Team points and the league and club awards each season. Those positions are the 6 midfield spots (Ruck, Rover, Ruck Rover, Left Wing, Centre, Right Wing) as well as Full Forward. In previous years, these positions were always reserved for the premium posters, those who were the most active and did the most for the club. All of that has changed recently, and there is one major reason, I believe, as to why that is the case.
All-SFA. Everyone here is playing for fun, but there is some cool things that you can get out of it, including awards such as All-SFA selection. Obviously the way the All-SFA works* is that 6 defenders, 6 midfields, 6 forwards and 2 additional midfielders make up the end of season Best XX based on a 50/50 split* between on field statistics and posting numbers. Some players are now playing the odds, being selected in back pockets or forward flanks, to give themselves a better chance of getting selected in the team. This means that the "best players" are no longer playing in the "best positions" on the ground anymore.
I'm not sitting here saying that the most active posters HAVE TO play in these 7 positions, but there is some alarming numbers for the other players that are now in those positions. The general consensus is that any player that does not average 15 post per week is not even going to be considered for All-SFA honours at the end of the season, so that is a good starting point for this thread. I have gone through each teams players and posting number through the first month of the season and put a mark on each team.
The categories I have broken them into are All-SFA (50+ ppw shown in blue), Deserving (25-49 ppw shown in green), Needs improving (15-24 ppw shown in yellow) and Back Pocket (>15 ppw shown in red) and I have ranked each team from 13 to 1.
13th - ROYS FFC
Without Cats_R_Cool_4_Ever, the Roys would be a genuine corpse. Reigning Mobbs Medalist, DERRINALPHIL is posting okay numbers but the rest of the team is almost non-existent. Four players not even reaching 10ppw with one more barely above that mark. Needs a serious overhaul.
12th - WEST COAST WONDERS
Another team with a big drop off after the top 2, with BFew and ClarkeM doing the majority of the lifting for the Wonders. SSwans2011 is improving and nearly at the yellow mark, but 5 posters with less than 100 combined posts, including Giant YoYo at Ruck Rover with goose eggs, not looking good.
11th - FIGHTING FURIES
The Furies numbers look bizarre due to a switch of positions from Orange crush and crazywildhorse. The shining light for the Furies, as always, is ShaunDuggan. Duggs has 214 posts, whereas the other 6 positions COMBINED have just 141, and is the sole reason the Furies aren't dead last. Orange crush has been good in his three weeks, but the third most active poster being Sab22 at 7.5ppw is damning for the Furies.
10th - DRAGONS FFC
No super standout player here, but a few solid players, the jump from 11th to 10th is actually quite big. Strigoi, Hatchy1992 and A Swallow leading the charge in the green with rookie 2big2strom and veteran Ljp86 with solid enough contributions behind them. The only issue with the Dragons is right at the bottom with Bradesmaen and Purple Jesus lacking in production. Overall, a pass mark, just.
9th - MOUNT BULLER DEMONS
We start to get into the overall pass mark teams, the Demons have two elite posters up top with moginie on a wing ad All Aust in the middle. Wosh may have only played one game on the wing before moving to a back pocket, but her contribution has helped elevate the Demons overall. Her replacement on the wing, Bluelegs, has done the complete opposite and actually dragged the Dees down. Overall, 4 positions over 20ppw every week is a good effort.
8th - SIN CITY SWAMPRATS
Another team all over the place with positional swaps, since moving into the Ruck, damicky has lead the charge with over 67ppw at the top for the Rats. jackster83 has been passed around like a $2 hooker, but has contributed solidly wherever he plays. Samcro24 had one week in the ruck and posted well and Tarasque36 and TheGoatBaron are pulling their weights also. The bottom three is the main issue for the Rats, with SweetD, GotTheGoodes and MP_ all lacking in posting numbers so far this season.
7th - LAS VEGAS BEARS
A very all or nothing type team the Bears. The only team in the comp to have two posters over 100ppw in the premo positions, with a third over 80ppw, but the drop off is steep from there. No players in the green with two posters slotting into the yellow and Matera92 and Test Tickle bringing up the rear in the red with less than 40 post each on the season. Overall a good fit with just a couple of fixes at the bottom end.
6th - GUMBIES FFC
Much like the Bears, there is only two posters dragging this team down but unlike the Bears, the top 5 is spread very evenly. DenieD, Hydatina Physis, GWS Goose, Falconista and beez are all averaging between 30 and 50 ppw, meaning there is constant activity from them without one person taking over. The Gumbies just need Supercheapgiants and/or Matthew Jelley to bump their numbers off or move out to be a top tier team.
5th - CONEY ISLAND WARRIORS
Was a tough decision to split the Gumbies and Warriors as the Gumbies had more consistency across the board, but the Warriors had a higher floor and ceiling on their numbers. New recruit Dingster is in the All-SFA tier with 53+ppw , while jannissary and Piggy Smalls are averaging 11 and 6ppw respectively down the bottom. A little bit more activity from yours truly and FootyGuy13 and the Warriors could really shoot up to the top.
4th - BAGHDAD BOMBERS
DP obviously leads the league in posting, so it's no doubt she is right up the top and leads everyone mentioned today. Similar breakdown to the Warriors but the extra green as opposed to a yellow gives them the nod here over Coney Island. If the Bombers can convince veteran iDon to get up and about, they could see themselves promoted to number 1.
3rd - EAST SIDE HAWKS
This one surprised me a little, but it seems like the Hawks have got their mix nearly perfect this season. Tarkyn_24 and a rejuvenated Loonerty lead the way in the top tier with sausageroll, TY24 and club **** okeydoke7 all putting in some quality efforts. Even DangerSloane in the back pocket category isn't that far off escaping, only 3ppw away from being upgraded. The only glaring weekness for the Hawks so far is rei154 with just the 3 total posts this season.
2nd - OPHIDIAN OLD BOYS
You can out the blame fairly and squarely on the shoulders of TRUMAN#1 for why the Old Boys are not number one this season. When your lowest ranked player is still averaging nearly 10ppw, your posting unit as a whole is very strong. Two All-SFA players, 3 deserving nods and only the 1 needing improvement, the Old Boys are proving again that they are one of the strongest posting units in the league.
1st - GOLD CITY ROYALS
The Royals in the off-season vowed to become one of the best posting units in the competition and so far, they have delivered that in spades. Their top four players are posting at an All-SFA level, all averaging over 70ppw with Crimson Azure going mental with nearly 200 per. GreyCrow and grumbleguts are doing more than enough in their positions which just leaves Ulahoopski the odd man out. CakeEater was rightfully moved out of the premo position with just 12 posts but Ulahoopski's 9 posts over three weeks just doesn't cut it. Make the Left Wing adjustment and the Royals will be perfect.
