August 2014 - Finished one win away from playing finals but precious few were convinced about our bona fides highlighting our inability to beat top 8 sides
November 2014 - the best ever footballer known to mankind gets picked by Geelong, leaving us the very vanilla duggan as consolation. Lamb was a risk and nelson who, or was that Jackson who?
Preseason 2015 - Lost our B&F winner (Emac for the clueless) to an ACL, Darling was in a moonboot and despite Simpsons proclamations that Nicnat had had his best ever preseason we didn't see much of him. Waters has retired thanks to his paper mache body that belies his hardness as a footballer

Round 1 - 10 minutes in our 2nd choice KPD goes down with an ACL. We lose by 10 points in one of the most exciting games of the season but nobody cares because it's a cripple fight between two bottom 4 contenders
Round 2 - Smash Carlton by 69 points on Friday night football. As it turns out thats par for the course so nothing special
Round 3 - Forget the game is at subi and go to McGilvary instead. By the time we realise we're 10+ goals down but somehow limit the damage to 30 points. Obviously we are ****ed though and need to tank for draft picks
Round 4 - if there's one team in more shit than us it's Brisbane so a 53 point win at the Gabba is of no importance
Round 5 - GWS are in good form coming in to this game. We beat them by 87 points so it's obvious to all we are downhill skiers and flat track bullies (For the record GWS beat the reigning premiers the following week)
Round 6 - In our first "real" test we beat Port on their own dungheap. As it turns out they're shit in 2015 so it doesn't count
Round 7 - We dispatch an undermanned Gold Coast by 82 points. as expected to an extent but the game was played in atrocious conditions - I know - I sat there soaked too cold almost to hold a beer cup
Round 8 - Dispatch a dangerous Saints by 53 points on their own dungheap but it's saint Kilda so doesn't count

At this point we are 6-2 with Mckenzie and Brown out for the year and no sign of a return from Darling. Basically we're still ****ed despite our ladder position because of the easiest draw in living memory (of a goldfish - no disrespect Goldfish )

Round 9 -5 goals 21 behinds are you ****ing kidding. Even still we end up blowing Geelong off the park to the tune of 56 points (and 26 scoring shots) as Nicnat takes mark of the year. Still Geelong lost two talls and aren't the top 4 contender from years past so result doesn't count
Round 10 - We push North all the way in a not so tropical thunderstorm but a series of brain farts (some by umpires) see us lose by 10 points confirming our status as pretenders
Round 11 - Grind our way to a 50 point win over Essendon who conceded the loss before the flight over and did no more than try to limit the damage. That said it was as unimpressive a 50 point win as you're likely to find. I wanted to smash the campaigners
Round 12 - Beat Richmond at the MCG on a Friday night after three consecutive 6 day breaks and a side that had the bye the week before. Little did we know that this was a curse (for Richmond) and as a result they were rusty so the win didn't count (except on the official ladder that said 4 points west coast)
Round 13 - Bye. We sucked. Move on

We are 9-3 but still only an outside chance to make finals

Round 14 - Our one time assistant coach of 4(?) years is stabbed to death by his son less than 48 hours before we play Melbourne in Darwin (Darwin ffs are you serious AFL) yet we still grind out a 54 point win in an emotional victory (Our obvious good luck continues)
Round 15 - In the most emotional game of the year we overcome the crows. The silence as the game ended and the applause for the clearly shattered crows players as they left the field was surreal. I was both sad and privileged that I was there
Round 16 - Beat Collingwood at the G by 5 goals for the first time in forever but were clearly given an armchair ride by the umps as demonstrated by the fact we won. Anywhoo Collingwood are shit so this win doesn't count either
Round 17 - Beat last years grand finalist by 52 points. They didn't have buddy or the most overpaid ruckman/forward the game as ever seen so win doesn't count ( we lost Gov the week before as well but that is immaterial). We also boo Goodes into semi-retirement. Who knew black skin was so thin
Round 18 - We conjure a draw against Gold Coast reserves. Maybe we really are shit. No excuses. arguably our worst performance of the year - at least a tie with the derby
Round 19 - play the reigning premiers without a ruck division and lose Gov in the 3rd quarter yet still only lose by 14 points. Maybe, just maybe we're legit but we still haven't beaten a top 4 side
Round 20 - Smack the living shit out of freo for the first time since 2012. Not premiership favourites but are now in the conversation even if we'll have to do it from 3rd
Round 21 - Hawthorn do the unthinkable and lose to Port, Freo lose to North and we spank the 4th placed (not anymore) Bulldogs by 12 goals

Top 4 is guaranteed no matter what. one win from our last two ensures top 2. First place whilst unlikely is a possibility

I'm still pinching myself at our position and struggle to believe we are legitimately a chance but we are balls deep in this

Dream on - could it happen?

For the first time this season i think maybe it could

When you spell it out game by game like that, I can understand why I was late to the 'we could win it this year' party. Low expectations, horrible start, slow incremental build up spattered with a few let downs and injuries. Smashing the shit out of teams becoming par for the course, but doing it in ways that everyone had an asterisk attached to. I think I bought into the anti-hype a little, and remember commenting several times about that being the least convincing 50/60/80 point win I could remember.

Suddenly, last three weeks we've played against opponents that the media has decided are the legit ones. Keep in mind that Richmond were near flag favourites when we played them, went on to win 6 (?) after our game as highlights packages nation wide had to skip round 12 for some reason. Good thing we caught them on an off day.

Average winning margin of 73 in home games. 9-2 at Subi. Home final, maybe two (maybe even three). I'm on board now.

The E-mac injury shattered me i watched it with the nephew he looked at me i had the most disbelieving look on my face similar with the Brown incident.

I assumed we were a sinking ship. i was wrong.

Gotta be in it to win it right Keys? We have nothing to lose, everything to gain, noone thought we would be here.

Its time for some September/October Huntin'.

That run down of our season explains why Wayne Carey has only tipped us 4 times despite being in 2nd spot for the majority of the year

Thanks Keyser for putting the research and great narrative , it was a great read . Everything is pretty good for a Monday today for some reason but that certainly doesnt reduce anything from your post .

I could be remembering our history wrong but I feel like our best finishes to a season there was an expectation to finish around that mark. This year has been an absolute ride. Both of my bosses are dogs supporters, looking forward to there faces when I walk in...

This post brought a big smile to my face :). Relieving the journey , game by game , was incredible!
I began to dare to dream after our win last week (I wrote off that game ) and hawthorn's loss (I wrote off top 2 before that game ). I expected us to win yesterday , but not by that margin , so that just made me dare to dream even more.

When you make top 2 you can certainly dream, We have a good system play a tough brand and have match winners on every line, we have nothing to lose we have all ready well and truly past expectations, We will give it a good crack this year !!!

My wife died a couple of months back and I lost all interest in footy. But if she was still around, she'd be delighted with our position. And so am I. Daring to dream.

Sorry to hear that, dude. I've had some shitty months myself, pales in comparison to your loss however the Eagles are bringing me all kinds of joy. I'm super proud of the team and I'm finally thinking that we can actually do this.

I've been trying not to get my hopes up too much but we looked SO good yesterday. We came up against a team who were always going to stretch us with their pace and we were dominant. If we keep playing this way, we can beat anyone.

Weirdly I think the Derby win was almost overshadowed by my disgust and anger at the hit on Cripps, followed by the Masten saga the next day. I was stoked we won but more pissed off than anything. Perhaps something to do with just how unwatchable Freo are, especially when they're flat.

The Bulldogs game was just such a joy to watch. That first half was as good as anything I've seen this year, and a reminder of the value of entertaining footy even when the margin's not as close as you'd like.

I think we forget sometimes just how good Naitanui and Kennedy are. They're capable of monstering opponents. They are two players that every team would want and yesterday they were scarily good. Add to that Gaff and Priddis having their best seasons, big contributions from the likes of LeCras, Shuey, Sinclair and Cripps, and we all know how good the backline has been under serious pressure.

I was at the game against Port at Adelaide Oval and that was the first time I started to think we might just achieve something this year - but I would never have guessed we'd play this well. Still plenty of work to do but I couldn't be happier with how this season has panned out.

Mum has been saying to me "should we book tickets to Melbourne" since the bye. I keep saying "no", we have too many injuries to be a contender. She has been more and more insistent over the last couple of weeks "we should be booking our tickets!"

Yesterday after the game she said am I booking tickets yet?

Yes! I think I believe.

Got the same dilemma, mate in Melbourne can get us GF tickets... Do I pull the trigger yet
