Analysis Do we have a forward line yet?

Given our midfield rotations and our options of a forward line with McGovern Charlie McKay Kerr Murphy LeBois Simpson TDK Polson Fasolo Silvagni I expect our average goal scoring to increase markedly in 2019.

Remember Bolton wanted to be more attacking last year but it feel apart quickly because of the injuries. 100 point barrier won't be an issue.

Can't fit Cripps Kennedy Setterfield SPS Dow Fisher Cuningham Walsh O'Brien Lang all on ball at once. :)

Rankine is so so tempting.
He is the ONLY reason i would consider trading pick 1 (Walsh) to GC in a 2 for 1 deal ie :
1 for 2&6 or 1 for 3&6 with GC taking Lukosios at 2

Murphy Curnow Pickett
McGovern McKay Rankine

In the air or on the ground this forward set up would be lethal ...
I think it all depends on how much Pickett progresses his fitness.....him and rankine could be our version of Rioli and Puopolo.

Well said. We've seen what Pickett can do in patches. If we can get him fit we may have a very good player on our hands. Not that this is always a good indicator, but he was an excellent junior.

You don't get drafted at pick 4 by accident. Pickett just needs a clear run with injuries. There's no reason for this not to happen, he's just had sh!t luck (I mean, a broken wrist?!! Seriously?!!! :confounded:). As a result, his fitness hasn't been all it needs to be. Russell will sort him out, that's why we hired him.
I'm quietly confident that Pickett will be sensational.

Still Walsh for mine. I don't trust the SA boys not to want to go home after we've spent pick 1 on them and invested a couple of years in developing them.

I don't get this Pickett small forward thinking. Doesn't play that role well at all. Gets lost easily. Only there because he wasn't fit enough. He is an on baller running type player. A bit like Brad Hill. He needs to get fit so he can play up the ground.

That would be a great outcome too if he can be that running on baller....and obrien is the other one?....

From the current list who do you think can potentially be our long term pressure forwards? I don't see any standouts for this role at this stage.

I empathise with those that lost some faith In Pickett this year. The injury was a huge hit which we all acknowledge and he didn’t see to come back well at all - seemed a bit chubby tbh. But when he did come back we were pretty much shot as a team with no defensive unit left and only a couple of kids in form. So it’s genuinely difficult to assess that.

In some of these games we tried him as a one on one forward which I don’t think is a strength. He needs to be able to use that pace and we really didn’t allow that - our delivery is shocking. A couple of times he just seemed to runaround in a big circle.

No more sitting on the fence for me - I think he will play 20 odd games this year and show his wares

After his lay off he was WAY out of shape.

The three blokes I am less confident about but see the greatest potential game winning ability in are : Cuningham/Pickett and SPS - if I had one wish it would be for the coaching and fitness staff to be able to get these blokes seriously fit and just as importantly, thinking and believing in themselves. these three have talent to burn - literally - I keep saying this in different threads but Pickett absolutely destroyed Sydney in Sydney - haven't seen a player with such explosive and dominant speed since Garlett and Yarran at their very best for us - and Pickett has mongrel in him - don't you worry about that. I can see Cuningham dominating as a HFF - but I would prefer to see SPS and Pickett as running receivers in midfield - with SPS being able to make space and Pickett being able to run into a defensive arc with a couple of bounces and a kick through the sticks - haven't been as excited over a single player's potential ever.

Sorry didn't actually respond to the actual OP.

I think we are set for talls and I think Fasolo will be one pocket and Cuningham will be on a flank - Bolton will have Polson/Murphy/Thomas/Garlett and resting mids to fill the other pocket with.

McGovern Charlie Cuningham
Fasolo Harry Murphy/Thomas/Polson/Garlett

5th year lucky maybe?

Drafted 2014.

Is it luck or does he have a genetic predisposition?

I doubt it. If he was on his third knee reco, maybe. A genetic predisposition to break his wrist? At GWS it was ankle issues I think. In his four years in the system he hasn't really had a chance to get his body fully AFL-ready. Last year was his first full pre-season. Then the wrist. Unlucky.

I think for Pickett he has always struggled to get to 100% fitness due to injuries and he and SPS will benefit a lot from Russell if they truly want it. Ability only takes you so far.....

I was thinking something along the lines of brittle bones. Or just bones that are less robust than normal.

Nup. If Russell gets him super fit and he starts to believe then he will be an amazing weapon. Need to sort out the if's.

It's not Russell who has to get Pickett fit.

It's Pickett.

Russell can't do the work for him.
Russell can't make him stick to his diet. All he can do is provide guidance.

Yes we squandered many forward entries with poor skills, which had a demoralising effect imo. Players like mitch and fasolo wont waste opportunities. And we already know what charlie and harry can do

It does need to be delivered in front though.... not much they can do if 3m behind or on top of their head.

Nothing to do with brittle bones. Breaking a bone in the wrist (scaphoid) is a terrible injury. It takes forever to heal. I broke one preseason in 1982. I had a cast put on and it was x-rayed after 6 weeks. It hadn’t healed. Another 6 weeks before I was given all clear. I felt for Pickett last year. I knew the wrist injury meant his season was stuffed.

Having a more composed entry with better users to start with will help. A midfield under-manned and a defense in disarray due to injury doesn't exactly set this up for you. I like the idea of having Obrien, and Williamson on the wings. Moving Docherty into the centre will help direct play through the corridor.

So he couldn't train AT ALL during that stretch?

Not even walking laps of the pool? Couldn't use a recumbent exercise bike?

Also knowing his caloric requirements would be lower due to time off training, perhaps a more restrictive diet may have been in order.

He could train but he’s a footballer. You can’t football.
