Being in Melbourne, I miss fritz. Fritz and sauce sandwiches - I'd kill for one right now!!!

No, he's just not South Australian!

I don't even know what it is called here. Devon??

I am not a fan of processed meats (except for Salami and snags). Fritz is quite feral!

Another South Australian "tradition"!!

Um, what the hell is Fritz???

Wasn't Fritz the name of the German relative the Griswolds went to visit on their European Vacation in that movie "National Lampoons European Vacation" starring Chevy Chase and Beverly D'Angelo?? :D;):D

Cheers!!

whats wrong with our tradition
Nah, nothing. I just find it odd that Adelaide folk hang on to such obscure things to identify themselves! I lived there for 5 years and the traditional things that frustrated me were:

Milk Bars are called Delis. Why?

Dance is pronounced Darnce.

The Pie Floater would be alright if it didn't have a Balfours pie in it and there is a signifcantly better Pie stand in Woolomoloo in Sydney!

The Glenelg Tram is considered to be a tourist attraction.

Oakbank is the horse racing highlight of the year!

Fritz is devon/luncheon dammit!

According to the Macquarie dictionary, "fritz" can be known by the following names:

Belgium sausage
Byron sausage
devon
Empire sausage
fritz
German sausage
luncheon sausage
polony <--- the WA name
Strasburg
Windsor sausage

And for the record, "derby" is pronounced durby, not darby :D

well, well, well, you learn something new every day! I too had never heard of "fritz" (I actually thought it was a codename for something rude and dirty - shows you how my mind works! :D ;)), but if it is the equivalent of what we call 'stras', then no I don't like it (I don't really like processed meats, except for salami)

Do they say Advarnce Orstralia Fair?

or Advants Ustralya Fair?

I'm an Advants guy myself. I also like to Dants, I wear Pants, Dislike Frants (as opposed to Frarnce) and like to grow Plants (not plarnts).

Bloody Sandgropers. Next thing you know we'll be calling potato cakes Scallops! :D

How bout "let's build sand castles," as opposed to "sand carstles"? Gee that one caused me some grief when we moved from Vic to SA as a kid. I was a laughing stock! After that my cousins in Melb. in visits back accused of saying TEEEVEEE instead of TayVay ;)

You're the idiot for not realising that fritz is something unique to SA.

The stuff is called polony here.

As for the original question, I used to love fritz and sauce sandwiches as a kid, but these days I am a bit more educated and wouldn't touch the stuff. Processed offal doesn't make my mouth water.

I think you mean why are delis called milk bars? What the hell is a milk bar? They sell other things besides milk :p

Figjam - your list was quite succinct.

But while we're at it, Records are for putting on turntables. To find out the numbers of the opposition's players, you need a Budget!

I'll have to admit I thought the same as Kristin5, that "fritz" was a code for something rude and dirty.:D :D I'd never heard of devon being called fritz. I've heard of checkside kicks, but obviously I'm not up on all the Croweater dialect.
Been years since I've eaten the stuff. Don't mind it, but salami and chicken slice are much nicer - and it's been a while since I've eaten them.

Sorry a Budget is what the Federal Treasury delivers. You better run the white flag up that stobie pole right now ;)

Love the fritz, but Devon isn't the same - less spicy, I think. Either that or less meat

Fritz and sauce sandwiches were great at school, except for the mess.

As for why South Australians say things differently, and have different words, its to do with the ethnic background. SA was primarily British (but not Irish) and German. A lot of that has stuck.
