I just generally dislike people.

But if an old bloke falls over in the street, I'll help him up, or there's a dog that's running around without any sign of an owner, I'll try and help people catch it so it can be identified.

i would help the dog and leave the bloke. Why? cause the dog wouldn't sue me .

Maybe thats why people don't care?
cause if you care for another human you can end up heartbroken/f'd over/sued etc.

Its becasue the average human is a c***

Kids and animals are innocent and will get my sympathy.

Once you're old enough to be a scumbag, I really couldn't give a f*ck about you - unless you're one of my friends or family, in that case I'd take a bullet for you.

ok I extend my sympathy to the people on BF - except the whoreks fans ;)

good point.

I hate casual days at work cause they're always giving to adult charities.

That's why ppl who are needlessly cruel to animals and pedophiles are the scum of the earth. Taking advantage of and destroying innocence is the worst thing you can do.

Human beings are not "designed" to care for anything more than smallish family/tribal groups, animals which directly assist their survival and themselves (self preservation).

All other types of caring are coaxed by either peer pressure, fear of reprisal/banishment or implied guilt.

This is not to say none of the other types of caring do not have rewards in a modern society or that you should not care as you see fit.

For instance.
Western Governments encourage "caring" for third world countries by way of aide, public altruism and humanitarian assistance more to prevent them becoming "unstable enough to directly threaten their country either physically or economically than out of an overwhelming sense of caring.

Caring though in a societal context, makes for a better living environment for all of us. The old "there but for the grace of god go I" philosophy.

It probably depends upon country to country, but I think in Australia the majority of people care.

I guess it comes under the definition of what you mean by caring. Does it mean that we care about people or issues we hear about or see on television? Or does it mean that we stop to assist people whenever we can and do random acts of kindness without expecting anything back in return?

I think that as a generalisation, australians are pretty caring people, but maybe I am being naive.

A lot of people will pretend they care about a natural disaster that they read about on page 39 of their local newspaper, but otherwise would not know about.

I also get pissed off when on msn, you'll have the "put an emoticon in the front of your name for the victims" It was a love heart for the child thrown off the bridge, now its a flower for the fires. Half of these people will be the type to try and take the piss out of it tomorrow.

So true, I had a friend ages ago that was all like 'Why don't you have a flower in your msn name?'. I think it was regarding the tsunamis a few years back. Anyway, I simply put it that it's not going to aid them at all and I don't want to. This of coursed received a lot of abuse.

Also when people are asking for money (this was mainly back in high school says) and although I give occasionally, I didn't feel like giving my money to aid tsunami victims, and she just got really uptight about it. People like that annoy me, good on her for caring, but don't force others to give up their money or time/effort because they believe it's so important to do so.

Oh, <end rant> :p

And for the actual OP, I tbh don't really care much about people that aren't in my life. That being said, the other day I drove past an intersection and a lady in an electric wheelchair was stuck between the road and the footpath (the footpath was on an incline and she couldn't get off the road and onto it). I instantly parked my car and helped her out. But this wasn't really because I cared, just that she was obviously distressed, and it wasn't much work to help lift the wheelchair onto the footpath.

You're having two bob each way here. You said you didn't care, but you stopped the car and helped her, so in some sense or another, you "cared". It's called sympathy, and most people at some level or another possess it. Without it our society would fall apart even more than it already is.
