Hear me out.
We obviously have the big three, all capable of kicking five goals in a game.
We also have Keays, Rochelle and Rankine who can also kick five in a match.

Then, on top of that we have Dawson who can go forward and dominate, remembering he was drafted as a forward in his Jr career.
Then we have Curtin who is shaping up as a real dangerous player who could dominate in the forward lines.

Now, last week Nicks threw Michaelanny into the forward lines, and he kicked three, showing he has the potential to go forward and hit the scoreboard if required.
While that's quite impressive, lets not forget that Josh Worrell also played alot of his Jrs as a forward, and was actually a very dominate player there. Could he be also pushed forward during the year to see what he could do?

With that said we have a number of players like ANB, Cummins, Peatling and Soligo who also can chip in with a couple of goals in a game.

While we already have the best attack, I think it can get even better with seeing how Worrell could go there.

Why on earth would we move our most productive intercept defender into the forward line?

Like there is never a reason to do that as football is built of intercepting power.

Game plan is just as important as the Hawks loss in particular demonstrates.

Brisbane is the one that really showed the gameplan woes, as xscore (which is useful as an audit on your gameplan) had us losing by 5 goals. Hawks was one we did everything right but goal kicking, seeing it was an xscore of 78.5 to 65.9.

Interesting post from RussellEbertHandball

Definitely worth a read. Keep in mind the season isn't over and we still have games against WBD, Collingwood, Hawks and Suns. 3 of the 4 games are home games

I've edited the Port references out of his post

Yesterday On the Couch they presented their Premiership Window graphics. I think they stole it from Champion Data. Something like 18 of the last 20 or 21 premiers sit in this top 6 offence and best 6 defence teams during each season.

This is where teams sat when the byes started in Rd 12

After the byes finished Rd 16

This is how it looks against the top 9 sides. This proves what I have written in here about the crows and hawks that they are flat track bullies against the bottom sides. Are decent defensively against the other top 8 sides but can't score against them.

Now lets have a look at the games and conditions -

Gold Coast - fine and sunny - perfect
Geelong - fine and night - perfect
GWS - very windy and some showers (not much)
Collingwood - wet and windy
Brisbane - wet and windy
Hawthorn - cold and freezing

Most of these type of weather conditions won’t occur in September. Think are best football is played in drier weather. It will be interesting to see how we go at Marvel against Bulldogs.

So we are the best defensive side against top 9 (conditions helped) but attack needs to improve. Much easier to fix attack than defense.

And a Port supporter calling us “flat track bullies” - yeh very humourous.

I linked his post in the thread as well

If you read the entire post he's not particularly complementary of port either

I think the point is that of the games you've mentioned above we've only actually won 2 of them, and by extremely narrow margins. We also lost to Fremantle.

It'd be nice to win at least 3 of the remaining 4 games against current top 9 sides.

I assume these were the same graphics shown on the couch, where we are in the ideal spot against all teams for combined attack & defence... but against the top 9, we were a little of with our attack... which reflects we have struggled against most of the better teams who are better coached with their game plans. Suggests we will play finals but can't complete with the top tier sides yet.

To be fair too, we actually should have beaten Gold Coast (Rankine dudded by ump), Geelong (choked second half), Pies (Innacurate kicking, Rankine yips) and Hawks (Dicey umpiring, terrible conditions).

Only game we were truly awful was actually the Freo away game IMO.

Bulldogs at Marvel will be our biggest test 100%. Would be an awesome sight if it turned into a shootout.

Poort flog, LOL. :$

You could go into finals being undefeated by all the other finalists and it would count for sweet **** all.

We've been in all the games against finalists except the Freo game. That's what matters IMO.

If we make top 4 and go out in straight sets and become the new Power, then so be it, but we're not there yet.

Still 4 more games against finalists before we get to finals (if we get there).

The point they are making is that we lack scoring power against the top 9. Whilst we are more than competitive we need to hit the scoreboard.

Mind you whilst we lack scoring power we also are very good defensively, which is probably where the weather conditions come into play.

Still we have another 4 games against the Top 9 to show our finals credentials.

This.
Hearing the SEN Champion Data segments they point out Adelaide being the worst top 8 performers against top 8 sides along with Hawthorn.
I think Adelaide have got better at winning close games and winning games against serious contenders will come with confidence, it’s the first year for many years Adelaide is a serious finals prospect, they’ll learn from their mistakes and grow in confidence along the way.

If you look at the graphics it’s not about winning or losing it’s about points for and points against.

The fact is that we underperform in the points for column against the other top 8 sides. It’s a fact.

If you are going to throw those things around you have to look at the reverse. We probably deserved to lose the Showdown. They only needed to kick straight and they win. Likewise Brisbane.

I like it, there should be scrutiny on our offence. The stats show it but even just watching you can see we struggle with our offence against the good sides.

No team is perfect, I think our defence has been so good it has covered over some issues.

You learn very little playing the bottom sides. We want the interstate media talking about us as the local media lose their minds over a ten goal win against Richmond.

Yes we have plenty of firepower, but you still need to get the ball to them. We need Draper to come through and 1 more elite midfielder to be a serious threat.

Tex is cooked, started well but his movement deteriorated throughout the match. Will be a big problem come finals time. But you’re right, Fog, TT, Keays, Rach and Rachele is serious high quality and extremely difficult to control if we get the ball moving fast at them.

Not sure on Curtin, he is such a smooth mover and an impossible match up when played on a wing. Once he reaches his full fitness he’s going to be amazing in that role and inside when required. Plus we wing is still a major issue if we lose him, Cumming is turning out to be a bog average winger and it gets a bit scary underneath that.

Now, on Max, don’t you remember the time that Mackay kicked 3 against the Hawks or Milera that one time kicked 3 in about 10 minutes at half forward? One swallow does not a summer make, especially against a weak opponent like Richmond. After those games there were posters genuinely believing that we’d just seen a string added to their bows. We’d need to see a bit more before we go calling Max a decent forward.

It's 2017 all over again, elite forward line but midfield a touch lacking (by premiership standards).

Unfortunately we’ve settled on this 23 plus Crouch and will work them into the ground striving for continuity credits. What we refuse to do is test our depth, which has 2 benefits, it allows us to unearth a better performer than Murphy or 34 year old smith and it gives important players an extra opportunity to hit September in better physical condition.

But we prefer continuity credits and it’s been limiting our ceiling for over 15 years.

I’ve had a quick tally of the top 9 teams v the top 9 teams.
Happy to be corrected.

I think us struggling against the better sides is a combination of being up against better players and better coaches but also our coward coach implementing the ‘don’t lose game plan’, which self sabotages our greatest strength.
