Does Murphy get to 300?

At this stage i probably would let him get to 300, otherwise it will just add gasoline to the current negative inferno engulfing the club.

Murphy had 15 games to get to 300 in a season where internal expectations would have involved playing a couple of finals, and was committed to playing off half-forward with some midfield stints as required.

This idea that he's destroyed our structure or the fabric of the football club is absolute nonsense. Once again a coach who has used many players inappropriately in a tactically-inept game plan that he barely tweaks, combined with a now-fired incompetent midfield/stoppage/transition/set play coach, is blaming the tools, which is exactly why he's under review.

The internal culture of the football department and playing list (and judging by some on this forum, more external club cultures to a degree as well) has given Teague a free pass to throw Murphy under the bus here, and I want every element of what caused that to be surgically removed from this club.

In fact no, I want it ripped out kicking and screaming, like the disgusting man baby attitude that drives it. Children masquerading as adults.

The bloke goes back to the VFL, gets to play his natural role, puts his hand straight back up for selection despite copping a tag and physical attention. Absolutely clueless commentary from far too many who parochially claim to be astute judges, though perhaps that should have been a red flag in the first place.

I have to be honest here, there have been many a fine player who finished his career nowhere near the best of his form, and most times fans forget the poor finish and instead in the years that follow remember the good times, the great play from such a player.

I am actually worried that with Marc Murphy some people might remember the end a little bit. And to no fault of his own, other than deciding to crawl across the 300 line. He has been a great servant of the club and deep down I want him to get to 300 but the longer this drags on, and hearing that he wasn't fit to play a full game last week and so subsequently was chosen as sub, isn't great.

It never really needed to be discussed, it was always going to happen and he's earned it.

All long servants of any club deserve their farewell games regardless of how they are playing at the time.
The discussion is around whether he should/would get to 300, not whether he deserves a farewell.
I have no issue with longstanding servants getting farewell games, even if their form doesn't warrant it. Gifting a player a farewell game is a bit different to gifting them half a dozen or more to reach a games tally milestone.

Fair enough but I certainly have no issue of getting him to 300.

I have no issue with people having that view, or the train of thought that gets there. I just can't agree with it.
I'd have more respect and fond memories of 285 game retired Marc Murphy, thinking 'gee it would've been nice if he had gone on one more year to crack the 300', rather than the shadow of a player we all like to remember, where half the people don't want him gifted the required games and the other half do, and thinking 'gee, I just think he went on one year too many'.

I respect both views, but I'm firmly on one side of the fence.

I have no issue with those who have an opposite view, it's all good. I do understand your argument. The only time it bothers me is when people start with personal and disparaging remarks about a player, which you haven't done to your credit. Thanks for the reasoned discussion.

I am at the point where it is what it is with Marc Murphy and getting to 300. It doesn’t tarnish the legacy of 300 game Carlton players. Future generations of supporters will look at our 300 gamers and see that Marc was the 1st overal pick, a 2 time Carlton B&F and if they care to look further, will see that Marc has polled the 4th highest Brownlow Medal votes in the clubs history.

The current generation of Carlton supporters will get over Marc Murphy playing 300 games for Carlton in the week leading up to his 301st game.

Cannot agree with this more.

Murph isn’t the player he was obviously, but in a functioning game plan he would make a valuable contribution more often than not.

I watched the VFL game following his dropping, (the fixed camera actually helps, rather than the TV version), was initially disappointed with his game - felt he was avoiding contested situations. I paid more attention to him specifically in the last quarter - he was doing everything you would expect of a seasoned AFL runner/outside mid. Hard running to provide options or to cover space, covering easy exits from stoppages, measured when he had the ball etc.

His deficiencies, (caused by playing as an undersized inside mid for more than a decade, and frankly the passage of time), are exposed and exacerbated by a crap game plan.

The angst should be directed at the club who are happy to compromise themselves to get Murph over the line. Selecting a player as the medical who you since stated was not able to play a full match, is just lunacy given we are under review and Teague's job was on the line.

It will be a hollow 300, instead of a rich and deserving 275 at the end of the day. That is a shame.

I'm not bothered. Probably not taking the piss out of me considering the club is known as the old dark navy Blues.

Couldn't agree more. Not a fan of ripping into a player and/or making it personal. I can't guarantee that I haven't done it myself, but I like to think that I'm reasonably good in that regard. I certainly try not to, but none of us are perfect.
I wish there could be more reasoned discussion, or even reasoned argument around here at times. It can get a bit heated and abrasive around here at times, and the way some posters tackle things reminds me why I took an extended break.

Pretty sure Sam Newman got carried to 300 games and it never really tarnished his playing reputation.

I like the way you've broken it down as to how he will be remembered by certain groups, but your first line makes me sad that it's got to that point.

Don't really see the point of 300 as a major milestone if your last 50 aren't adding anything to the side. In his day the kid was a beauty, but that day was a decade ago.

I suspect my lasting memory of him will be of him being carried to an arbitrary game number which is largely symbollic of the era of the club where he was one of our senior figures. This is a shame.

The legacy is 300 games in probably the worst era of Carlton Football Club.

A couple of individual awards as well.

Let's be honest, we had to hold off subbing out TDK because Murph is cooked and can't be subbed in before half time. Get him to 300 and be done with it I guess.
