Whats murph going to get out of playing in ressies? He knows all he needs to know. Is a professional so would be well prepared for games as well.

It's not about what Murphy gets out of it, it's what his teammates and the club get out of it.

An opportunity for someone like Honey or Durdin to play forward, or someone like LoB or Ramsay to play wing with some other shuffling of magnets.

And hopefully a senior head with a point to prove in the reserves, and perhaps a renewed hunger to actually perform if he gets another chance.

I think Murph still considers himself a midfielder, and sees the move to the forward line as a convenient excuse for not being as involved.

Legacy is way more important than Milestones.

Agreed. Would have more respect for the guy if he ended up on 299 because he tweaked a hammy trying to run down an opponent or provide a shepherd than if he meekly limped to 300 and got chaired off after a lacklustre performance.

Coaches should be telling him that. Finish your career the way you want to be remembered.

lostb a lot of respect for smurf this year ... he has set his sights on 300 and ignored that few will buy him a beer if he makes it. Bloody tragic

Chalk and cheese between Honeys tackling and Murphy’s
I’m looking forward to the energy Honey brings he closes space quick and tackles to the ground

Remember when people were justifying Murphy’s selection by bleating “but we need his delivery inside 50”?

I’m surprised it’s taken this long for the tide to properly turn, was an utterly ridiculous call to give him another year. Has been serving up this garbage for way too long.

His recent comments after being dropped sealed it for me. I was happy enough for the focus to be on getting the next generation properly developed, but when you have a senior player, a former captain at that, state that he thought he was "doing enough to get picked"....get ****ed. It's not about doing enough, do your best.

That was indeed damning, but i'm amazed that it has taken Murphy actually opening his mouth, and actually articulating what he's been doing for the last 3 or 4 years, "doing enough to get picked"....for people to notice.

I mean, he's been as conditional as i have ever seen a footballer for a number of years. Hasn't tried to hide it one bit.

But saying this last year, or even earlier this year was met with waves of indignation by much more than a few.

I don't really begrudge a guy whose body has been battered like his has wanting to play a more outside, less physical game. We saw the same from GAJ in his last couple of seasons, and I'm sure there are other examples who are simply lower profile.

I'd hoped that the rest of the team could step up a bit to cover that deficiency - many teams have a few "soft" players, but they play roles that mitigate it.

But yeah, the recent comments from Murph indicated it's not just wanting to play a role that's more suitable and helps the team, it's just wanting to play for his own benefit.

Melbourne walked nathan jones to 301, the difference is, he DOES play like its his last game.
I don't think he makes entitled claims he deserves to play at the pointy end of September?

Ooh, thanks for reminding me. That was the other comment he made that didn't sit well with me.

"My main motivation is to play in a successful side, that's why I'm still going."

Not "help this side be successful" or "enjoy some success with my mates", but "play in a successful side". Might be overanalysing it, but the phrasing implies a fair bit of selfishness, almost as though the onus is on the rest of the group to become successful for him, or at the very least that he's just along for the ride after putting up with years without success.

Credit to Murph, he turned down offers from multiple opposition clubs over the past decade, to play for the Blues pro bono... am I doing this right?
Apparently he is ,, see the sacrifices he makes , how lucky are we as supporters

Melbourne only had to carry Jones for a game or 2 and although he was finished, he was never conditional and maybe working well behind the scenes now for the club.
Murphy had to be carried for the better part of the season and was clearly the most conditional player in the AFL.
Reckon Gouger probably saw some commercial benefit in the idea and gambled on the expected improvement in the team covering Murphy’s shortcomings.
Obviously things haven’t gone to script but here we are and what do we do ?
There’s a fair bit of credibility on the line for a few now under the microscope and Murphy may have to be the casualty …

He's always been like that, his captaincy was really more so a reward for sticking fat, than his traits being a leader or the leader.
Same with Kouta for taking a pay haircut, when we were basically broke.

I loathe to heap shit on the guy as there is an element of truth that he stuck fat, but for this, he was adequately compensated and looked after.
None more than today. He's been on the list 3-5 years too long, and his slogfest to get to 300, has ruined his legacy and risks being remembered for exactly as you explained. selfish.

Games gone past him and he plays a roll only the best clubs can afford to carry , a give and get type, deep outside, with commendable distribution by foot.
He cant/wont tackle, doesn't run the other way and lost his core strength. I remember against the tigers, he tried to get cute on the mark with dusty, with one hand, dusty rag-dolled him, and nearly broke his shoulder.

He came across like a smart arse when he said that. Definite put off.

I say no. Hasn’t deserved many, if any game this year alone. If he prove he is focused on the team in the VFL, then he can get back the last month.

The alternative is get him to 300 then retire him immediately.

Honey has been told he needs to work on his technique as his tackles are too vigorous. I am not too concerned if he give away frees on the wing pounding his opponent into the turf.

Haha if true that hilarious. If Honey's tackles are too vigorous, you can't get a much better correction than murph.

I will be so pissed off with the club if he plays 300. Will show the selection committee have no desire to improve as a team. Would hope if he is carried there, nobody involved in selection is at the club next year.

You only have to look at all the s*it Sam Newman received playing his 300th on the bench. Completely overshadowed his career achievements.
