In fairness, I don't think there was ever any real suggestion that he was tackling "too hard", people have just embellished the story over time.

Josh is very strong athletic type build, he’s extremely powerful and he had an enormous amount of sprint efforts, more than I generally see in any game from anyone: he had over 30 sprint efforts which is incredible. He’s capable of doing that so we expect that from him, but what he did was he played with physicality. At times, it was a little bit too much where he might’ve been a bit undisciplined where he gave a few free kicks away late in the game, which hurt our team, but in saying that, he did play with physicality which is exactly what we want from Josh. He laid a couple of bone-crunching tackles which is great to see, his speed certainly gets into the game and makes him hard to defend. The important part for Josh is how we fix up that discipline which I’m sure we can do that moving forward.

It was from two months ago, and all the player reports since then have highlighted how much they love his tackling and physicality.

Haha if true that hilarious. If Honey's tackles are too vigorous, you can't get a much better correction than murph.

I will be so pissed off with the club if he plays 300. Will show the selection committee have no desire to improve as a team. Would hope if he is carried there, nobody involved in selection is at the club next year.
Well said mate and shared by a lot of realistic supporters and who are sick of carrying players for years who don’t derserve a game

Ooh, thanks for reminding me. That was the other comment he made that didn't sit well with me.

"My main motivation is to play in a successful side, that's why I'm still going."

Not "help this side be successful" or "enjoy some success with my mates", but "play in a successful side". Might be overanalysing it, but the phrasing implies a fair bit of selfishness, almost as though the onus is on the rest of the group to become successful for him, or at the very least that he's just along for the ride after putting up with years without success.

Great point, very revealing phrasing. Weird enough comment given CFC had just proved that finals were out of the question.

Teague has to leave Murphy in no doubt what his non-negotiables are and that Murphy will not be played if he doesn’t meet them.

Selfless has to replace selfish in Murphy’s thinking.
That’s not in his DNA , but good to hang on hope !! Every time he plays we are going in short and we already have enough issues in covering for other players

Pretty damining stuff isnt it?

I don't know...what are you referring to, and in what way is it damning?
A player being chided for going too hard in the context of the softest team in the competition (for starters) was my reaction a couple of months ago.
My secondary reaction was if this crapola was being published for public consumption and had somehow passed some sort of editorial test - what worse rubbish is possibly / probably being coached into young developing players at Carlton - in the context of the worst development team in the competition.

They were my two primary reactions to the Honey report from VFL.

Oh cool. Well then, yeah I disagree.

Because when you read it, he wasn't discouraged from going hard, they just needed him to make sure he did it at the right times and in the right way so as not to give away costly free kicks.

And all the talk since is that they love his physicality and the way it intimidates opponents.

Good development, by the sounds of it. Play hard, but don't be stupid about it.

Ok -=Well lets agree to disagree then ..

Having watched him a little he also really commits to the tackle, I think they are also asking him to be aware of when 'going' leaves a gap that the opposition can exploit.

He hits hard and fast ,anticipates there movement and rarely gets stepped
That’s what you want in the forward line pressure maybe tackling technic can be refined to minimise frees
But not intent

My view is that if Murph gets to 300 he damages his legacy. Instead of being remembered as a club champion, he becomes remembered as the bloke who was gifted 300 (like Sam Newman) and wrecked the selection integrity of our club and cost us promising players who have been starved of opportunity.
Please don’t get me wrong, I love the loyalty and commitment he has showed across a wonderful career. There is nothing wrong with falling short. You are still regarded as a champ. Ask Lenny Hayes and Matthew Boyd.

The difference between Murphy and Boyd/hayes is the latter loved their club and their teammates and were selfless for their team
So huge difference and difference why Boyd and hayes are still revered after their playing days

Murphy is currently in a Mick Martin situation

I want to see him go back to he reserves and play well to earn it

Let’s not talk about that dark history and the embarrassment of letting mick Martyn play his 300 while wearing the famous navy blue jumper

we supporters are suffering enough

Some people here have short memories.

Yes, I am the first to admit Murphy is probably cooked as a player, probably has been for 18 months, and has been out of form for much of the season and I have lost patience with him at times during that time

BUT

Do we not owe a loyal and fantastic club stalwart, dual best and fairest winner and All Australian player some kind of respect, dignity and loyalty that has given us over the journey ?

He could have left several times for more money and team success throughout his career, but he stood loyal with us.

He was a Captain, not a great one but a good one through some of the darkest years in our club's history.

Given the years of great service and LOYALTY, Marc Murphy has given our club during the darkest years of our club's history, he fully deserves to make the 300 game milestone and retire on his own terms.

Marc Murphy is a True Blue Carlton person who has bled for the club and stuck by it through thick and thin.

Alas I cannot say the same of some 'supporters' here and on social media who cannot seem to recognize all the sacrifices and hard work he has given to our footy club.

Another of Murphy’s cousins pumping him up ! Is he paying ?? Because he is bleeding Carlton dry with no return on investment

so what you are saying to all employers if your employees stop working or trying but have been with you for a long time x , don’t sack them but just keeping them and there is no one else out there that can replace this persons ability of only you remember what he used to do

is that correct

One big difference with your analogy, we have to pay him anyway, sacked or not....

In the GAME of football, experience is still important and won't cost us any more money to have around...

I have only met Marc Murphy once. At my local KFC.

You totally missed the point of my post, being a professional footballer entails so many personal sacrifices and lack of personal liberties afforded an everyday employee at a work place for starters.

And as for your comment abour Murphy bleeding Carlton dry, what a Load of horseshit. Fact is, he turned down more money from Geelong a couple of years ago (as well as the lure of a potential flag) to say loyal with us/one club player.

Maybe in your own world with your own ethics and values, you may not rate loyalty very highly, but by Christ it impresses me.

Ugh, I am just really frustrated that Murphy played a solid 13-14 years of footy (minimum) for our great footy club, but it's all awash cause he has struggled a bit/slowed down in the last 18 months ?
What a narrow minded and simplistic perspective to take. Smh

Maybe he wanted to stay with us because he liked to cruise, knew standards would be higher if he went to a flag contender.
