does the CAP fit???

How can you guarantee that - even almost?

It would be shocking management if we were not maxing out the cap every year. Just for some perspective, we have been in the top half of the ladder for 4 years and made 2 of the last 3 prelims. That alone justifies payments at the top end of the spectrum.

Performance isn’t really the issue though. The AFL set a cap maximum. We have a huge Football budget and still make profits at the top end of clubs after that. We can afford to pay the maximum. Given that, if we did have players who did not deserve as much as the cap might allow then we should ALWAYS front load the difference ion order to have ready space for a recruit of to rewards performance.

In short, if we are under the cap, which I am willing to bet we are not, we have an incompetent football department.

on the contrary.if we are are under the cap, with the top 4 positions we have got over the past few years I think that show's great work by our football department. Not sure what you want,to over pay our players?

not paying 100% of the cap means we always have space to go at at high-priced recruit when the chance arrives.Which it has now.If we had a Premiership team,of course pay the full 100%,but you cant fault our football department here

Mark usually your posts are quite logical

But if we are anywhere near maxing out our cap i want to know why and who is getting paid over the odds. Because then i can smack walsh and pert around the ears and shake teh hand of the player and his manager that is getting extra money
OK a few hypotheticals:
Say you are short of the cap having worked out a fair and reasonable deal for every player

1. Beams has 1 year to go and you know GC would love to take him. You offer him a bit more than "fair value" and an extra year. Then you offer him the amount spread evenly over the 3 or 4 years. That is effectively over paying early and hopefully underpaying late.

2. Say you want to negotiate a new deal with Didak before the old one ends. Offer him 3 years at say $750k, $500k, $300k. It is the opposite of what Carlton did with Fevola and previously with Kouta.

3. You have to negtiate a new deal for Anthony even though you think you might trade him to a club wuth cap issues. You do the deal and offer the prospective club some help with his contract.

4. You want to use up the last $100k in your cap for next year. You decide to go to the captain and offer a 2 year extension to his contract. You offer the same money for 2011 and 2012 as he will get in 2010 but you pay him a $100k sign up fee in 2010.

It is not about paying too much money it is about pre paying to ensure plenty of head room when Fevola becomes available and you can negotiate a better trade if you take the whole $750k off Carlton's hands.

If Carlton are that keen to get a deal done (i'm not convinced they are) then they will be forced to pay some of his contract. Even if they don't, we could probably throw in a late pick in return for them paying some of the contract.

And we should definitely have enough room anyway even without all the above. Should easily be able to fit him in.
