forget would we have him and what we would give to have him, COULD WE HAVE HIM?

does anyone know the status of our salary cap?

lets pretend we have to fit him in for 2 years at 700k. CAN THAT BE DONE?

I agree. I would have thought that having a fairly even-across-the-field team, that adding a 'star' to the lineup would be deemed possible. Other clubs can land big catches, so why can't we? Time will tell.
 
I almost guarantee we were not paying 100% of the cap this year, it would be shocking management if we were.

We have a young list, and players like Beams, Sidebottom, Reid, Anthony, Dick, Toovey etc would want pay rises in their next contract, meaning we would have needed some room to fit them in the future.

Now we have lost Rocca (half his salary counted under salary cap) and Clarke, with no contracts left for either player.

The truth is none of us have any idea how close we were to the 100% cap, but logic says we now have room to spend, although it may mean we cannot afford a player or two if the GC or WSYD throw big money at them, if we add Fev that is.

any deal for Fev could involve the Blues paying part of his salary e.g. when we got Woewodin from the Dees.

Most clubs use 90-93% of their salary cap...

You have to use 95% of your salary cap, unless you get special permission from the AFL to use either 92.5% or 90%, and this is only in situations where you are financially troubled.
I dont know whether the average is achieved over more then one year though, as most contracts are 2 years at least.

when we had rocca, bucks, clem etc we were using 98% supposedly

id say we are sitting right on the 95% limit currently
 
Well it may spell the end of Lockyer or O'Bree one will have to go to free salary if we are to secure the Fev (Hope we do!). Marty Clarke's salary was not of a high paying order but im not too sure how much Pebs was on.

The Visy ambassadorship is a scam.

We could always give Fev $300,000 p.a and let Lexus pay him $400,000 to be the Public Face of their Lube Service...lol
 
We were going to offer J Brown $1M when bux was playing and Clement and Rocca. The Fevola will fit in our salary cap easily I would say even with the extra dough needed for Pendles and co.
Our list is youthful and will be for a few more years with Pebs going and most likely O'bree and Tarks moving on in that time.
The question is, does the Board have the balls to pull it off. I think Swann owes us one anyway.
 
Fev would give 2-3 years which allows us to back-end younger players contracts. Can def be done if J Brown was possible.
 
while most clubs back end contracts collingwood has done the opposite. for the last few years we have had no one who has demanded the big bucks and we have taken the oppurtunity to use up the space in the salary cap forward ending contracts so that when a big name does come along we can make a play for him. if collingwood decide to go for him the salary cap will be no issue, although will still try to get carlton to pay some of the salary if when can, we got that deal with brownlow medalist we can do it for a coleman.

Wed definately be able to squeeze him in the salary cap, but at what costs? For a short term gain we could be well worse off. Hed maybe have 3-4 years MAX, and we would be forced to lose a young player or two(possibly draft pick) to make it happen.
The club will look at the possibilities, but 'should' see the light.
I dont want to see the likes of either Dawes/Wellingham/Cloke* and a highest draft pick gone for Fev.
*As important of a player as Cloke can be, hed probably be the biggest leverage to make a trade happen IMHO.

I suspect, given we went for Judd and said we could fit him in and given we have gone for Brown and a few others on big salaries that we could accommodate him. I would hope given the achievements and ager of our players individually and collectively that we are actually well in front of the cap via front loading. However if we can’t fit Fevola into our salary cap then we have some players we have to offload because they are considerably over paid.

He's contracted to Carlton, they HAVE to pay out a portion of his contract as well.

Same thing happened with Woewoedin. We basically had to pay him jack.

Rocca is gone, we're gonna delist some others, Lockyer and Presti will be on the Veterans list.

If we trade the right players, there's MORE than enough room.

aren't Lockyer/O'bree on the veteran's list? if so, not much cap space saved by selling them

It would be shocking management if we were not maxing out the cap every year. Just for some perspective, we have been in the top half of the ladder for 4 years and made 2 of the last 3 prelims. That alone justifies payments at the top end of the spectrum.

Performance isn’t really the issue though. The AFL set a cap maximum. We have a huge Football budget and still make profits at the top end of clubs after that. We can afford to pay the maximum. Given that, if we did have players who did not deserve as much as the cap might allow then we should ALWAYS front load the difference ion order to have ready space for a recruit of to rewards performance.

In short, if we are under the cap, which I am willing to bet we are not, we have an incompetent football department.

Mark usually your posts are quite logical

But if we are anywhere near maxing out our cap i want to know why and who is getting paid over the odds. Because then i can smack walsh and pert around the ears and shake teh hand of the player and his manager that is getting extra money
