I am currently thinking of getting a dog (first one since i was a child) but am struggling to decide what breed to get.
I am looking for a small to medium sized dog which is both affectionate and loyal but has a streak of independence. Definetly not looking for a dog which demands/craves attention 24/7. A quiet dog (i.e not a yapper would be great but not essential)
The amount of care it requires such as grooming, excercise and vet costs is not a factor so that pretty much opens it up to a wide range of dogs.
Cost for the puppy is also not a factor as I'm prepared to pay through the nose if the right dog presents itself.
Any recommendations or suggestions would be welcome and appreciated as this decision is doing my head in.
Dogs I have had a strong look at up until this point:
Pug
White Highland Terrier
British Bulldog
Pugalier (although I'm a little suss about this whole designer dog business)
Beagle
Golden Retriever (the only medium to large dog I would consider)

I've got a kelpie which of course needs a lot of stuff to keep the mind active because it is naturally a sheep dog, if you can give it enough exercise they are really smart and if you got a smaller breed (look at the parents) it might alright to get, cost shouldn't much mine the one i got was given away. Also before this day I had an Australian Terrier and that was also independent, of course one of the smaller breeds and mine loved to chase snakes which in turn led to me getting the kelpie (cost around $250). For your situation i would suggest the terrier over the kelpie because if you live in a city it would be hard to keep a full grown kelpie happy.

We have a Weimaraner (8 yrs) who has been a great dog - all the qualities you have mentioned, and gentle with the kids. Great bark on her though, so haven't had too many problems with intruders on the grounds. Loves to play ball (retriever / gun-dog), and needs plenty of exercise. The Hungarian Viszla (sp?) is a similar temperament, but smaller.

I've got a Lab and I know its a bit big for you, but you mentioned a Golden Retriever.

A Golden Retriever is the next best thing in my opinion. I'm sure they'll be quite similar. If so, they love food.. LOVE IT. And, they lose a fair amount of hair. That their only negatives. They are very affectionate dogs, clever, cute ;) and loads of fun.

Don't go for a small dog. If you did, go for a sausage dog because they rock :D

Definitely go for a Golden Retriever though.

Get a Jack Russell. They are very good around kids and very good around everyone especially if you train them. :thumbsu:

We have 2 beagles and they're the best dog we've had. :thumbsu:

Golden Retrievers can be a bit yappy and aggressive. If you're considering that size dog, a labrador is a better bet IMO. We've got one and they're just the most adorable dogs out there. He rarely barks, likes his walkies but isn't "stupid" around the house and is great company. He's primarily an outside dog (he prefers it there) but can be let inside without any fear of destroying things/running amok.

Beagles are notorious escapees. They can dig out of anywhere! They can also be yappy.

My second choice, after a lab, would be a pug.

I'd highly recommend a Whippet.

Brilliant little dogs, loyal and friendly, they don't need you to be around 24/7 because they love to sleep alot of the 24.

They bark very little, get along with other dogs and if raised around cats they will accept them too.

Not prone to being snappy dogs they are good with kids.

Their coats are easily to keep clean, health wise they are pretty much free of any breed prone type diseases.

They are what i would call a bomb proof breed of dog in that they have very few draw backs as a pet.

Nooo its not mantis and kenny

I bought my wife a Maltese Shiit Zu cross , he's a great little dog , the best natured dog I've ever had . Has a great personality too but I understand that can be an individual thing as some of the breed have 'little attitude' problems .
He is very loving and loyal but has a good independant streak . Very intelligent breed as well I understand .
Reasonably high maintenance with quick growing fur so they need a bit of grooming and clipping .

Never been a small dog person but this little fella is a gem .

If you want a small dog I'd suggest a Wheaten Terrier because they're a great looking dog(but expensive), a Jack Russell, a Fox Terrier or a JR-Foxy cross. Just make sure you get a dog from the RSPCA or the Lost Dogs home. ;)

They come desexed and microchipped which will save you money. :thumbsu:

Terriers rule and IMHO are the smartest dog next to a poodle who are considered to be the most intelligent breed of dog. Andrew McKay is involved with Greyhound rescue which finds homes for dogs that are too old to race. Apparently they aren't that active when they're not running and apparently they make great pets.

And it's a good cause. :thumbsu:

But they go like a rocket in the park and they're too fast for a pitbull. :p :D

Jack Russells are very cute little dogs. You have to make sure that you take them to obedience school so that they can learn the basics in everything and then you will have a great dog to play with. Just don't do what we did with ours. Don't feed him tin food because it makes the dog fart all the time.

Poodle gets my vote - Smart breed. They come in different sizes, Toy, Minature and Standard. They do need grooming - an even all over clip is better than that "poncey" one - but the bonus is they don't malt and are allergy friendly.

Other choices are Cavalier King Charles spaniel, cocker spaniel, Australian Terrier.
