Don Pyke's role is the set plays. Center bounces, boundary throw ins, stoppages, kick outs, kick ins and all those things. He is responsible for midfield during the game. I have seen him at training and he has mainly taken responsibility for the midfield ground and some of the set plays we did when entering the forward 50.

he is our gun interstate, high-profile, experienced coach, well that was what we were first told until he was appointed that is.....

Wrong assistant coach, jackie boy. That was Hamilton and with his experience under Pagan, he's all of the above.

nope we had already appointed hamilton, and the club was looking out for a 'experienced coach' in the vain of peter rohde, not that he was any great loss. Certainly, we werent expecting someone with no coaching experience at practically any level. It was like Don who???

Well, I'm delighted we didn't appoint Rhode. Don who might yet prove to be an ace, whereas there was no chance of that being the case with Rhode.

I don't think anybody can slag our new coaching panel when they haven't even played a Wok game yet.

Judge them by their actions, not because we don't know them yet.

Jack, he coached Claremont from 1999 - 2000 in the WAFL I think that counts as some coaching experience

of course, we have to wait and see how they go, i 2 am happy that we didnt apppoint an ex-afl coach, like rohde, because theres normally a reason why they're an ex. don may prove to be a good appointment, but i was given the impression that the third person was going to be an experienced source, thats all. Season starts soon.....

yep hes qualified.........do u happen to know where they finished?? why the short time?? The fact is he was out of coaching for 4 yrs then so he hasnt exactley had a rich coaching experience.

They finished 5th and then 3rd from memory and he was working at the time as well which is why he had to give up the coaching to concentrate on his work more. They then won the premiership the next year.

The accrediation scheme in coaching aussie rules in australia is very similar to the one that I know in gymnastics (in fact I believe the afl changed their system to bring it in line simliar to the gymnastics one) so you have to keep up to date even if you are not coaching and you can not get coaching jobs in australia if you do not have the accreditation. The main difference between the aussie rules and gymnastics is that in gymnastics we have to do 'updates' every year to be allowed to coach the following year but in the aussie rules their accreditation lasts for 4 years.

from memory Claremont made the finals under Pyke in 2000. he stopped coaching due to business commitments. he became an eagles board member in 2001 and was up until getting the job at the crows.

1997 - 1998: West Coast Eagles team runner & match day coach1999 - 2000: Claremont Football Club Senior Coach

Claremont struggled after winning the WAFL flag in 96 so I would assume there was a period of consolidation.

Just a point . You dont have to be the number 1 coach to have an effect. It seems to me reading between the lines that Don Pyke realised he wasnt the person to lead a club, but to be more effective as a member of the coaching panel. It happens , I was a better assistant than coach, I accept that and also recognise that clubs need those individuals who can bring a little bit of what they know. Don Pyke also looked towards more of a back room role.
