Im guess im dobbing myself in as a footy show watcher here, and i know a lot of people arent. But they had Don on last night.

I really enjoyed seeing him on TV, its a shame he seems so removed from the game these days, as I think some of our players could benefit from some of his passion and expereince down at the club. I'm not old enough to remember him playing, but I do remember my old man banging on about how good he was all the time when i was growing up

They didnt ask him about his health which was stange, as i know he had a battle with cancer, does anyone know how he is going? looked pretty healthy last nite. :thumbsu:

Don Scott is an absolute rippa. I suspect he is removed from the game because he doesn't like the direction it is going, or has gone. The difference between him and us here is that we whinge and moan, and he acts. He has always been a man of action and a man of conviction.

Whilst he may not have many friends from footy, the line of people who respect him would be as long as anyone else at our club, or in the game.

Don Scott was one of my favourite players, but he's just like Dermie:

1. On the field: 100% passionate player who lifted for the big games, and was brilliant in Grand Finals; he would give his life to win for Hawthorn.

2. Off the field: a blinking idiot

Just like Dermie ...

100% disagree. He saved the club when it was going to merge with Melbourne.

Agreed.
He is is own man. He is an individual.
He doesn't get involved in footy any more because it is no longer like he remembered it to be.
Much respect for Don.

I know he was involved in the merger fight, and so was Dermie, despite both being virtually pushed out of the club.

But Don certainly was an individual - Leigh Matthews has said that, despite playing together for 11 years, Scott never spoke to him socially, and they never even sat down for a coffee together.
I've heard other ex-players, including Rodney Eade say the same.

As I said, he was fantastic on the footy field, but not away from it.

There's an open mike episode with Don that's very good, not sure where you would find it though.

Few points I remember

Last saw Hawks in 08 granny, was glad they won but doesn't follow them. Goes to GF every year with Doug as an AFL life member. Only AFL game he attends.

Supports his local club, seaford I think.

Doesn't go to Hawks club because he doesnt know anyone there, too many non football people that come and go.

Rarely spoke with Lethal but there was no animosity, just weren't friends, had nothing in common other than footy.

Wore a bright orange shirt.

I loved Don and Dermott as players but you must accept the realities of life.

Davo 23 is right on the money.

One of the fiercest competitors you'd ever meet ... more so because of his total commitment, singlemindedness and eccentricity.

Loved seeing him on there, and you can tell he was very comfortable being there with Newman.

A little positivity from Don about the modern game, too, which is incredibly rare. Likes that there is more long kicking and contests. Would love to see him come back to the club...

Yep, Scotty is his own man and you sound like a sheep.

He must have a bad memory because I sat next to him in 2011 when we played Freo at the G
We wore our Kokoda jumpers, and all he would say was " why the hell are we wearing those bloody jumpers for. There not brown and gold"!
I'm a Kennedy Club member, and sometimes a lot of ex players sit in our area when a past players function is on

Thankyou for posting that.

It is refreshing to listen to some one so honest, passionate, intelligent and articulate in what passes for popular media in this country.

Ha ha, Chewy, you're at it again!

I watched Scotty through his whole career. He was an inspirational footballer, and easily the greatest captain we have ever had. He lifted players around him.

And he was at his best in Grand Finals, which is the ultimate test of a footballer.

But he's still a looney!

And I'm happy with being a sheep, not a lamb like ewe ...
;)

This isn't much chop. Hope you two don't shank each other.

I like the anecdote about Don's last game for us. The story goes he was huffing and puffing his way around the field possibly against Melbourne at Princes Park?? Anyhow with the game was in the bag, Kanga Kennedy, who was the coach at the time, decides to send a message out with the runner to drag Scotty. The runner gets to Don and informs him of Kanga's decision- that "it's time for a spell Scotty". To which Don replies in his inimitable way "tell him (Kanga) to get ****** its my last game I'm staying on til the final siren"! A crestfallen runner slinks back to the bench to inform the coach of the exchange, everyone including the coach are in disbelief. A story that I suggest, aptly characterizes the man- a man who dances to a different drum. A man who in the time of war is a hero and in the time of peace is a villian. A man prepared to live or die by his convictions. Who else but Don.

As a side note Ive also heard the games of squash his played against Kanga back in the day were by far and away more brutal than anything that ever occured on a football field.
