Doug Barwick or Leigh Brown

Douggie was a fine player but you undervalue the Anvil methinks - that 3 pronged forward line stuck terror into defenders hearts through the season and strongly contributed to us finishing strongly enough to win the flag.
You do know I authored the "Anvil Chronicles"?

Few players had the "cult" status Anvil did in 2010, but that was not the question the OP asked.
I don't think I underestimated either player.
Barwick sneaks home because of his contribution in the drought breaker.
Both of them get free beer at mine for life.

I'd be taking Brown actually....these people saying Dougy Barwick was as "tough as nails" ... seriously? He played in the same teams as Gavin Brown, Millane, Banks, Manson, Tony Shaw,Tony Francis, Kerrison, Kelly, Monkhorst and McGuane. All of those blokes were a hell of a lot more physical and resilient than Douglas!
Dougy was a "finisher" (a bit like Richard Osborne) a beautiful kick who always seemed to be going at top speed....but he hardly had to throw his weight around in THAT Collingwood side. He was a lesser version of Paul Williams if you like.

Brown on the other hand, had a real intimidatory "presence" and made oppositions nervous whenever he was in the vicinity. He played multiple key roles in the team and he made other players better. Dougy Barwick kicked the finishing goal in the '90 GF but Banks and others set him up with their handball. He was a finisher.

Barwick was hard, to say he was not is crazy.
The fact he was surrounded by hard tough players doe not diminish him one iota, in fact it gives you an indication of what it took to win a flag in 1990.
Whether or not he had to throw his weight around is moot. He did when it had to be done.

Barwick and Williams is an odd comparison and I think you were trying to obliquely insult Williams commitment making it.

From the phrasing of your reply you did.

I'm not belittling either you or Douggie, from the way you phrased your post it seemed you undervalued the anvil.

From my point of view the power forward line displays that he was able to help orchestrate were just as influential as Douggie's individual efforts. To be clearer, his contributions in a number of games during the season made our forward line intimidating.

That to me is just as valuable.

Never.
Anvil was a god.
Just ask the Dalai lama.

Not really that odd at all. Both Tasmanians, both stocky, both fast, both half forwards and both great kicks and goal hogs.

I don't remember anybody saying we need to get someone to play the Doug Barwick role after he left. So it's Brown for mine.
I’m sure I heard that we needed someone to play the Barwick role, immediately after he left, on the internet…..

Barwick was only 176cms. In fact I recently watched a replay of our 1990 game against St.kilda and the commentator said he was 172cms.

Shows how different the times were and makes Dougie very impressive indeed for his size.

Which current day player would be “style like Dougie Barwick”?

Elliott reasonably similar style. Elliott better though.

Brown was probably more important from a team structure perspective, by accident really, while I'd say Dougie was the better more consistent player. Barwick's goal in the GF is memorable but he sunk a 55-60m bomb on the run in the 2nd semi which was awesome.

Paul Williams debuted as a 17 yo in 91 playing a similar role and Barwick had a quiet injury interrupted season too. Was firing in the 92 pre-season but did his knee and that was the end of him sadly.

Geez harsh on Willo. He went on to play another 14 seasons in the AFL after 92. Played really good footy for us and then went on to win 2 bnfs at Sydney was AA and won a flags. ID say that was the start of him

I think we have wires crossed here, I meant 92 was the end of Barwick. Didn't come back after rupturing his ACL.

Ha ok that makes sense. I don't remember dougie doing his knee, must have been all the weight of his big barrel chest wearing down his knee.

^This version of Barwick's story isn't close to being correct, as he didn't just retire from the AFL at the end of 1991. He also couldn't have then played 5 seasons at South Launceston (with 1996 being the final one), as that would mean he played there from 1992-96.

Wikipedia has it wrong as well:

It is correct to say he played his last AFL game at 29, but not that he retired at that age!

Collingwood Forever just says this:

This also happened in 1991 (The Age, 2 July 1991):

He was listed as available (after suspension) a few weeks later, but never made it back into the senior team.

4 Feb 1992:

He played Reserves for Collingwood in 1993:

He played Reserves regularly that year, kicking a reasonable number of goals, and occasionally making the best players, but wasn't again selected at senior level.

He was delisted at the end of 1993 (6 December):

It really was a tame ending to what had been a fine career at senior level.

Into the VFA in 1994 (17 April):

It looks like he had a very good year with Dandenong, and kicked a lot of goals.

Thanks for that Daics. Surprise to me that he was on our list in 93. I'd always thought he retired / was delisted at the end of 92 after his knee.

It certainly wasn't a great way to go out. A flag hero, a poor 91 (don't recall that suspension in ressies), injured in 92 and overlooked all of 93. I guess Williams had well and truly cemented himself then so wasn't needed for that similar role.

We have this for his Reserves record with the club:

No doubt most of those games (and goals) would have come in 1993. In rounds 15 & 16 he kicked 4 goals yet still wasn't selected again (though the senior team had big wins both weeks). It's a bit of a strange story, really, as it does look as if the club had decided he wasn't getting picked for the senior team again no matter what he did!

We did lose 5 of the last 6 that year from memory to fall out of the finals race so given his performances then you'd think he should have got a call up unless he got injured. But that year was when we retired players such as Morwood, Turner, Gayfer etc so maybe it was more about youth and rebuilding from that point on.
